Bug#679226: GM45: GPU hang when locking the screen in KDE

Hi Jonathan

I've been running the 3.4.4-1~experimental.1 for more than a week
without problems and when linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64 (3.2.21-3) came out,
I reverted to that one and so far (after another week), no GPU lock ups
anymore.

So, without looking at the detailed kernel logs, I think the problem
simply disappeared (or was fixed by another Wheezy upgrade during that
time).

So, all is good right now, sorry for the noise, feel free to close this bug.

Cheers

Carsten

 Kernel bug observed in syslog when performing an rsync operation. I
 use rsnapshot and I believe an rsnapshot operation conflicted or
 interfered somehow with my manual rsync command. The source and
 destination are USB HDDs with ext4 filesystems. After the kernel bug
 was observed I discovered the source filesystem had a corrupt
 filesystem. If it is relevant I was using the rsync command with
 --hard-links and I also observed messages of this sort:

 ext4: consolidate in_range() definitions

 which was backported into a stable update. If the 'first' and 'len'
 arguments to in_range() are both 0 and either of them is unsigned, it
 wrongly returns true. This means that:

 if (in_range(iblock, ee_block, ee_len)) {
 ...
 ext4_ext_put_in_cache(inode, ee_block,
 ee_len, ee_start,

 EXT4_EXT_CACHE_EXTENT);

 may pass ee_len == 0 to ext4_ext_put_in_cache(), triggering the BUG_ON
 there. Maybe that's just not a valid case so this doesn't matter, but
 it seems like it might be possible with a corrupt filesystem?

 Anyway, I think the proper definition of in_range() is:

 #define in_range(b, first, len) ((b) = (first)  ((b) - (first))  (len))

I agree with this change and it actually resolves the issue:
http://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2010-3015
while my original patch doesn't.

Bug#679830: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel bug observed in syslog when performing an rsync operation.

2012-07-22 Thread Imran Chaudhry

 Sorry to hear this. I cannot recommend using ext4 in Linux 2.6.32.

Thanks for your reply Ben.

As an aside, from what kernel version would you recommend use of ext4 in?

Maybe I should use (tried and rusted) ext3 for my backup devices. I
mentioned this problem in my local LUG and a couple of people reported
similar problems with ext4.

I don't know what the minimum would be but I believe it's fine in Linux
3.2, which will be in the next Debian stable release (and is now
available in testing, unstable and squeeze-backports).

Yes, that's a safer choice.

They're not - I just don't have personal desktop machines running the

Bug#670398: [PATCH 2.6.32] usb: Fix deadlock in hid_reset when Dell iDRAC is reset

2012-07-22 Thread Ben Hutchings
From: Stuart Hayes stuart_ha...@dell.com

This was fixed upstream by commit e22bee782b3b00bd4534ae9b1c5fb2e8e6573c5c
('workqueue: implement concurrency managed dynamic worker pool'), but
that is far too large a change for stable.

When Dell iDRAC is reset, the iDRAC's USB keyboard/mouse device stops
responding but is not actually disconnected. This causes usbhid to
hid hid_io_error(), and you get a chain of calls like...

hid_reset()
 usb_reset_device()
  usb_reset_and_verify_device()
   usb_ep0_reinit()
usb_disble_endpoint()
 usb_hcd_disable_endpoint()
  ehci_endpoint_disable()

Along the way, as a result of an error/timeout with a USB transaction,
ehci_clear_tt_buffer() calls usb_hub_clear_tt_buffer() (to clear a failed
transaction out of the transaction translator in the hub), which schedules
hub_tt_work() to be run (using keventd), and then sets qh-clearing_tt=1 so
that nobody will mess with that qh until the TT is cleared.

But run_workqueue() never happens for the keventd workqueue on that CPU, so
hub_tt_work() never gets run. And qh-clearing_tt never gets changed back to
0.

This causes ehci_endpoint_disable() to get stuck in a loop waiting for
qh-clearing_tt to go to 0.

Part of the problem is hid_reset() is itself running on keventd. So
when that thread gets a timeout trying to talk to the HID device, it
schedules clear_work (to run hub_tt_work) to run, and then gets stuck
in ehci_endpoint_disable waiting for it to run.

However, clear_work never gets run because the workqueue for that CPU
is still waiting for hid_reset to finish.

A much less invasive patch for earlier kernels is to just schedule
clear_work on khubd if the usb code needs to clear the TT and it sees
that it is already running on keventd. Khubd isn't used by default
because it can get blocked by device enumeration sometimes, but I
think it should be ok for a backup for unusual cases like this just to
prevent deadlock.

Bug#679830: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: Kernel bug observed in syslog when performing an rsync operation.

2012-07-22 Thread Theodore Ts'o

 Thanks for your reply Ben.

 As an aside, from what kernel version would you recommend use of ext4 in?

 Maybe I should use (tried and rusted) ext3 for my backup devices. I
 mentioned this problem in my local LUG and a couple of people reported
 similar problems with ext4.

There were a lot of important bug fixes were integrated in the oh,
2.6.35 or 2.6.36. Unfortunately, porting the necessary ext4 patches
to 2.6.32 was very difficult, since some of the patches in question
had prerequisites that involved fairly massive changes to the quota
subsystem.

An enterprise distro such as Red Hat could make the backports work,
but it wasn't easy, and Red Hat by policy doesn't release its broken
out patches, so it's hard for Oracle (and Debian) to profit by the
yeoman work done by Eric Sandeen.  (Note, by the way, not his fault;
blame Red Hat management.)

As a result, I would strongly recommend that people use a more modern
3.x kernel.

Since Debian Wheezy will be using a 3.2-based kernel, this problem
will be addressed for the Debian stable users (hopefully!) soon.

Regards,

- Ted

Subject: brcm80211: smac: only provide valid regulatory hint

commit 94a2ca311cf4154c566cf5c49b88c13cd4cdce73 upstream.

The driver provides a regulatory hint to cfg80211 as obtained from the
SPROM. Mostly, this will be a two-letter ISO country code. However, it
may obtain special country code similar to the world regulatory domain
as used in cfg80211. This patch avoids setting these special codes as
the hint is lost to cfg80211.

Bug#681232: ath5k phy0: gain calibration timeout with linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64

2012-07-22 Thread Sergey A. Lipnevich
I have the same exact symptoms, also started with
linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64 but worked great with many prior 3.2 versions
including linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64.

Bug#682250: linux-image-3.2.0-2-amd64: sleep/suspend with USB drive connected produces instability (eventually lockup) on wake/resume

2012-07-22 Thread Tom Roche

Ben Hutchings Fri, 20 Jul 2012 19:24:14 +0100
 [kernel version=3.2.9-1] is long outdated, please upgrade to 3.2.21-3.

Done, after working around

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=651973

as recommended @

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ndiswrapper/+bug/978920

I was able to

$ sudo aptitude install linux-headers-3.2.0-3-amd64 linux-image-3.2.0-3-amd64

relatively normally. I'll post if the sleep/suspend/USB/wake/resume
problem recurs.
