Bug#691665: [squeeze] Under CentOS 6.3 as a host OS Debian kernel hangs as a guest OS (KVM-QEMU)
Hi Jonathan, Thanks for your reply. I just tried to boot the original squeeze kernel (2.6.32) in recovery mode (kernel commandline argument single). Single mode makes no difference, it hangs with 6 vcpus at the same place. Here is a screenshot where it hangs: http://www.tssajo.com/debug/kernel-2.6.32-single.png (I can still hit enter then the cursor moves down, but that's all.) With just 4 vcpus it starts up fine. I would test this issue with the latest kernel from experimental. Can you please help me install that kernel? I'm sorry, I've never installed anything before from the experimental repo. I've added this line already to my apt sources file: deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main and did the apt-get update When I try to install the actual kernel, I get errors, see: # apt-get -t experimental install linux-image-3.5-trunk-amd64 linux-base firmware-linux-free initramfs-tools Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done initramfs-tools is already the newest version. linux-base is already the newest version. Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Bug#691665: [squeeze] Under CentOS 6.3 as a host OS Debian kernel hangs as a guest OS (KVM-QEMU)
Jonathan, I have good news. Debian Linux works perfectly with the 3.5.5 kernel! I've tried with 6 and 8 vcpus and 8GB of RAM assigned to the VM and it boot up very fast without incident every time I've tried. Please let me know how do you want me to proceed. Should we try to find out why this kernel works with more than 4 vcpus while the 2.6.32 kernel (and 3.2 from backports) does not? Or should I just try to use the 3.5.5 kernel in production environment - I know it is not recommended as the latest kernel is not well tested... What do you recommend? Could you try booting an affected kernel (e.g. the 3.2.y one) with kernel commandline arguments single sysrq_always_enabled, and hit alt+sysrq+h to confirm magic sysrq is working and alt+sysrq+w to list hung tasks? If you find yourself with nothing to do before someone looks more carefully at the range with the fix, here's how to bisect to narrow it further. This might be a little confusing: here, a good kernel is one exhibiting the bug and a bad one is a fixed one, so the first bad commit is the fix. 4. tell git about experiments so far git bisect start -- '*kvm*' git bisect bad v3.4.1; # boots ok git bisect good v3.3.4; # hangs git checks out a revision halfway between to test, so 5. test make deb-pkg; # maybe with -j4 dpkg -i ../name of package; # as root reboot git bisect bad; # if it boots ok git bisect good; # if it hangs in a similar way git bisect skip; # if some other bug makes it hard to test 6. repeat step 5 until bored or until it shows the first bad commit 7. at any step, if the gitk package is installed you can run git bisect visualize to watch the range with the fix narrowing, or git bisect log to summarize the tests you've already done and allow someone else to pick up where you left off Sometimes this process is called a reverse bisect, since we are trying to find the patch that introduces a fix instead of a regression. If curious, you can read more about the more ordinary kind of git bisect at [1]. Hope that helps, Jonathan [1] http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/docs/git-bisect-lk2009.html see also http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-bugs.html#s9.2.1 From: Gleb Natapov g...@redhat.com Date: Wed, 2 May 2012 15:04:02 +0300 Subject: KVM: Do not take reference to mm during async #PF commit 62c49cc976af84cb0ffcb5ec07ee88da1a94e222 upstream. It turned to be totally unneeded. The reason the code was introduced is so that KVM can prefault swapped in page, but prefault can fail even if mm is pinned since page table can change anyway. Yes, I will be able to look over and/or test the combination. If you apply all patches then diff vs. the scsi-misc tip, you should only see kernel 2.6.32.y specific changes. Sorry for the long delay. I've made a backport with all relevant patches I could find from the 3.0.y tree and put the patches and a built package at http://alioth.debian.org/~jrnieder-guest/temp/driver-test/ Patches are against 2.6.32.y. The most notable missing patch is the BKL conversion --- for Debian squeeze it seems safest to just keep using the BKL. I'd be happy for any thoughts you have. Bug#689420: cont...@bugs.debian.org
severity 689420 grave thanks Now the system does not boot even when acpi=off. It always stops booting somewhere in the middle. To make it sometimes (!) boot, one has, in addition to acpi=off, to make grub wait more than the obligatory 4 seconds. And even after that, some connected hardware does not work at all or does not work properly: external modem, touchpad, touck stick. This makes the package relatively useless. Thus, raising the severity. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-kernel-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble?
