This adds knowledge of the drop_capabilities=... option that kinit
supports. When set, it gets passed to run-init's new -d option.

This lets a system owner drop capabilities (like CAP_SYS_MODULE and
CAP_SYS_RAWIO) before the system init starts.

Thanks,

-Kees

Dear Maintainer,

I was attempting to install Wheezy on an armel TS-419PII with an nbd root and
mkinitramfs aborted with:

Jan 4 12:47:32 in-target: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-

Jan 4 12:47:32 in-target: mkinitramfs: for root /dev/nbd0p2 missing nbd /sys/b

Jan 4 12:47:32 in-target: mkinitramfs: workaround is MODULES=most
Jan 4 12:47:32 in-target: mkinitramfs: Error please report the bug
Jan 4 12:47:32 in-target: update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-
4-kirkwood with 1.

Note that I am reporting this bug from another system. The problematic system
has installed (in /target from the d-i PoV):

ii initramfs-tool 0.109all generic modular initramfs generat

AFAICT MODULES=most is already in effect:

# grep MODULES= /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
MODULES=most

I also retried after installing nbd-client in the target, nothing changed.

Other info from the target system, all chroot'd to /target with /proc, /dev
and /sys bind mounted into the chroot:

# uname -a

/dev/nbd0p3 /dev/nbd11 /dev/nbd15 /dev/nbd5 /dev/nbd9

Looks at least a little like:
   http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=657955

The TS-419 only supports netconsole install so I can't add modules=partman-nbd
to the kernel command line. Instead after ssh to installer@host I drop to a
shell and run:
  anna-install partman-nbd
  apt-install nbd-client

(nb apt-install wouldn't take affect until some point after the failure)

Thanks,
Ian.

My i386 PC has an i2o hardware RAID controller as the only hard disk.
The block special files are defined as follows:

brw-rw---T 1 root disk 80, 0 Sep 23 15:24 /dev/i2o/hda

I notice that the entry for the hard disk (i2o!hda) contains a special
character:
the exclamation point. Could that be the cause of the trouble? (Or part of the
trouble?) The exclamation point is often used in the shell as a character to
access command history.

Package: src:linux
Version: 3.12.6-2~bpo70+1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?

I tried to boot Debian Wheezy from an xfs root.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?

I installed linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64 and linux-image-3.12-0.bpo.1-amd64 on an
xfs root filesystem on an hardware raid.
This lead to upgrading the initramfs system to use dracut due to the backports
kernel dependencies.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

Grub2 boots into the linux kernel, but the system fails to boot, as the
initramfs system could not mount the root filesystem.
This was because the initramfs could not load the included xfs.ko, as
libcrc32c.ko could not be loaded.
Loading libcrc32c.ko failed to load due to missing symbols (insmod said so),
but dmesg showed no output.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I expected the system to load the xfs module, mount root and continue to boot.

   * Workaround

Reading
 http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-bugs/2009-11/msg01239.html and
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/681819 and
 https://www.mail-archive.com/linux-crypto@vger.kernel.org/msg02728.html,
I added crc32c.ko and crc32.ko to the initramfs the loaded it before xfs. Then,
booting works.

With dracut, this is about adding /etc/dracut.conf.d/xfs.conf with content
 add_drivers+=crc32c crc32
and editing /etc/default/grub to contain
 GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=rdloaddriver=crc32 rdloaddriver=crc32c rdloaddriver=xfs
rootfstype=xfs

On the hppa platform the fstype program from klibc crashed (details in
Bug#745660) which exposed a problem in the
get_fstype() shell function in file scripts/functions.

In this script, fstype is called like this:
eval $(fstype ${FS} 2 /dev/null)
if [ $FSTYPE = unknown ]
Since fstype crashed and returned nothing in the variable FSTYPE, FSTYPE
stayed empty instead of the value unknown and as such no further analysis via
blkid was done.

I think it makes sense to pre-initialize FSTYPE to the value unknown before
calling fstype. That way the program logic will continue correctly if something
with the fstype program is wrong.

Attached script fixes this.
Please apply.

Hi,

On most virtual machines it is possible to use the virtio interface
through the PCI bus to export for example block or net devices. On some
architectures the emulated machine does not have a PCI bus, and thus the
transport goes through an MMIO interface.

Currently initramfs-tools correctly handle the PCI case, but not the
MMIO on. In case of a virtio based root device, the virtio_mmio module
is not available in the initramfs causing the boot to fail. The patch
below adds the virtio_mmio module if virtio is used (in dep mode), or by
default (in most mode). Could you please apply it in the next upload?

Thanks,
Aurelien

Package: systemd-sysv
Version: 204-10
Severity: important

/sbin/init is installed as a symbolic link to the absolute path
//lib/systemd/systemd.

This breaks in environments where the root filesystem is not mounted at /,
for example, when inspecting a chroot from outside or, which is
worse, when being first mounted from initramfs.

I just spent quite some time figuring out why the initramfs on a PXE
boot client behaved oddly, and it turned out that the nfs root mount
script in initramfs has a logic that repeatedly checks for the existence
of /root/sbin/init, with the soon-to-be rootfs being mounted at /root.

With the absolute symlink of systemd-sysv in place, /sbin/init points
outside the /root directory holding the rootfs, and thus renders the
link target non-existent.

Just updating the /sbin/init symlink to point to a relative path fixes
the issue without side effects:

  /sbin/init - ../lib/systemd/systemd

Please fix this in the script so systemd can work in all environments
where sysv-init worked!

Hi,

I've set panic=0 as a kernel cmdline argument which should trigger a
reboot instead of spawning a shell. However, the reboot seems to be
uneffective and a shell is spawned nevertheless. This is unpleasing
since spawn=0 is marketed as a security feature in
initramfs-tools(8):

panic sets an timeout on panic. panic=sec is a documented
security feature: it disables the debug shell.

Output on screen:

Loading, please wait ...
Spawning shell within the initramfs
Rebooting automatically due to panic= boot argument

BusyBox v1.20.2 (Debian 1:1.20.0-7) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
(initramfs) _

The commands halt, reboot, etc. don't work either.

To fix the security impact of an open shell I propose to at least add a
return after the reboot command so that if the reboot is effectively a
NOP still no shell is spawned.

Package: linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.1-amd64
Version: 3.14.4-1~bpo70+1

I'm running a freshly installed Debian 7.5 on a KVM guest system.
The rootfs resides in a btrfs subvolume.
To get access to the improvements to btrfs in newer kernel versions, I
added the wheezy-backports repository to /etc/apt/sources.list and
upgraded linux-image-amd64 from it, which installed
linux-image-3.14-0.bpo.1-amd64.
After the upgrade, the system fails to boot when the 3.14 kernel is
selected — error message below (OCRed, so there might still be a typo
somewhere in there).
The system still boots normally when I select the 3.2 kernel in the GRUB
menu.

The issue has happened on two different KVM guests on different hosts
(configured exactly the same otherwise).

When the 3.14 kernel failed to boot, I installed
linux-headers-3.13-0.bpo.1-amd64 instead, which has been booting and
working without issues for a few days now.

On-screen output during a failed boot attempt:

Bug#717805: Adding an advice about lsinitramfs is not working when hit this bug ?

2014-08-31 Thread Michael Prokop
Hi,

JFTR:

* Javier Barroso [Tue Mar 25, 2014 at 11:11:31PM +0100]:

While the patch at 22 comment in this bug [1] is not accepted (can you
clarify why it is not accepted or applied?), I suggest adding an
 advice to script.
[...]

I just uploaded initramfs-tools v0.116 to Debian/unstable including
a change close to what you proposed - thanks for that. This should
improve the situation until someone comes up with a
future-proof(ier) patch which properly supports the cpio initramfs.

Any further help welcome!

Bug#760037: nfs-kernel-server: nfs crashes in set_nfsv4_acl_one

2014-08-31 Thread Frank Denissen
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.2.6-4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Executing debuild on a self-made package on a nfs4 mounted partition (normal
pc, i386) provoked the error on the server (sheevaplug - armel
architecture). The build package contains a large zip file that is unzipped
during the build phase.

I tried to add no_acl to /etc/exports of the nfs4 share but this had no effect.
I exported/imported the partition as nfs. This solved the problem.

The log files on the server contained the following information:

Bug#678696: Event based block device handling (fixes USB and nested devices problem)

2014-08-31 Thread Michael Prokop
Hi,

f'up to our recent discussion we had on IRC

* Goswin von Brederlow [Sat Jun 23, 2012 at 09:25:28PM +0200]:

the attached patch adds an event based loop for block devices to the
init script. New blockdevices are recorded in
/run/initramfs/block-events by an udev rule as they appear. The init
script repeadately waits for that and then calls
/scripts/local-block/* with a list of new devices storedin NEWDEVS
until $ROOT and $resume (if set) exists or a timeout is reached.

This fixes the problem that USB devices take too long to be
discovered and crypto, raid, lvm or multipath can't be started on
them. It also adds support for arbitrary nestings of them, e.g. raid5
 over raid1.
[...]

First of all thanks again for the patch and your helpful feedback on
IRC.

I've tested your patch based on top of current i-t git master
(v0.116) with a setup like:

  BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.14-2-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/vg0-root ro quiet

but it sadly fails to work as intended (it boots but doesn't find
the block devices until the timeout is kicking in). I didn't
investigate closer yet, but AFAICS it seems to be related to the
fact that /dev/mapper/vg0-root doesn't exist at that time yet.

If you or someones else finds time to try and possibly further
investigate I'd very much welcome and appreciate that.

regards,
-mika-

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hello and thanks for your work on Debian,

The stable version of uswsusp (from lenny) is working perfectly (both
suspend and hibernation) on my Amilio Pi 1505-B20510. Since upgrading to
Sid, while suspend still works, hibernation doesn't resume anymore (the
save to ram process seems ok but restarting the computer just go through
normal boot). I had tried many things to sort that out, like trying with
different kernel, different uswsusp config (setting device to
/dev/sda3 my swap-fs, changing method from architecture to
shutdown). Actually, I found that the only way to solve the problem
was downgrading to stable version of uswsusp.

If you need more informations, please ask

Regards

Jean-Louis Biasini

If I created swap partition via Debian Installer, Debian Installer will write
the following line to /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume (for example):

RESUME=UUID=6636b7cf-6a7c-43ff-ac92-2e58bc9f3a77

So, initramfs generates correct initrd.img, which can resume from `suspend to
disk'.

But if I add swap partition to /etc/fstab after installation of Debian,
`dpkg-reconfigure uswsusp' does not write this line to .../resume, so I cannot
resume from `suspend to disk'.
If I add this line to .../resume manually, all will work fine.

Also, this bug appears in Ubuntu Lucid.

After installation and configuration, s2disk saves image, but after reboot
system
boots normally. Found out, that problem is exactly the same as described on this
list http://www.mail-archive.com/debian-user@lists.debian.org/msg564518.html -
file
/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume does not exists.
After putting UUID of swap partition to this file and generating initrd again
(update-initramfs -u), everything works fine (resumes from suspended image).

2014-08-31 Thread Askar Safin
Hmm, I cannot reproduce the bug on modern jessie (i. e. jessie debootstrapped
today) o_O.
I performed the steps from
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=632627#72 :
 1. Installed uswsusp. uswsusp said to me that I have no swap and I should add
 it and run dpkg-reconfigure uswsusp.
 2. I added swap
 3. Rebooted
 4. I ran dpkg-reconfigure uswsusp. uswsusp found my swap and it was happy.
It asked me a lot of questions. Then uswsusp triggered initramfs rebuilding
 5. Rebooted
 6. I ran s2disk and I could not wake up. So, this is a bug.
And I was able to wake up on the step 6. But /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume
for some reason still doesn't exist. resume device in /etc/uswsusp.conf
points to my swap device (and I did not edit this file manually).
So, please, investigate, what happened, is bug really fixed or this is some
trick.

And then there was discussion on debian-devel, which was lost for some reason.
So, we should just continue discussion.

Bug#756947: hp-wmi: wifi rfkill can't be reversed

2014-08-31 Thread Alan Wilson
results of request below:

/sys/class/dmi/id/product_name:HP Compaq nc6230 (PU984AW#ABA)
/sys/class/dmi/id/product_version:F.15
/sys/class/dmi/id/board_name:0944
/sys/class/dmi/id/board_version:KBC Version 40.22

However, I had a repeat of the hangup after a soft kill- even with
hp_wfi removed.

Not sure what to make of that. Same warnings on shutdown and startup
'waiting to fully populate /dev' resulting in a failed to set power on
IPW_2200 - request timed out - or words to that effect.

Cheers,

Al

This was reported against Linux 3.2, but I don't think there have been

Perhaps the hp-wmi driver should blacklist this model for wifi rfkill
(while leaving all the others features enabled). Does that seem like a
  reasonable approach to fix this?

  Ben.

Hi didn't quite have to get pencil and paper out to create a truth table

becoming available and the latest firmware being run are accurate,
blacklisting this model seems like a reasonable approach to restoring
  basic functionality.

Alan, can you provide the identifying information for this model:

 grep . /sys/class/dmi/id/{product,board}_{name,version}

 Ben.

Bug#697017: root=compute fails at parse_numeric() for lilo compatibility

2014-08-31 Thread Stephen Powell
On Sat, 30 Aug 2014 18:36:34 -0400 (EDT), Michael Prokop wrote:

If someone would provide an up2date patch (against current git
master would be awesome) which resolves this issue (without possibly
breaking anything else :)) I'm absolutely willing to accept it.

Here is what I am currently using on my system:

   http://users.wowway.com/~zlinuxman/kernel/parse_numeric.patch

Sorry, I know that it's customary to include patches inline, but my
e-mail client has the nasty habit of expanding tabs to blanks, inserting
extra line breaks, etc. Therefore, to prevent my e-mail client from
corrupting the patch, I have included a link instead.

I tried to think of every perverse case my devious little mind could
think of. (For example, what if there is more than one colon, what
if a colon is the first or last character, etc.)

Note that although the comments say lilo compatibility, this code is
executed whenever the kernel boot parameters contain a root specification,
regardless of the hardware architecture and regardless of the boot loader.
It is associated with lilo because lilo translates a specification of

   root=/dev/...

in /etc/lilo.conf into the corresponding kernel composite device number,
such as

   root=801

This translation takes place behind the user's back. The user never sees
this number. But the kernel does. However, you can always code a root
file system specification in this format directly, if you want to, with
any boot loader.

Let me know what you think.

The battery is not detected on an Acer B115-M laptop, and AC Adapter is always
detected as online, even if unplugged:

:~$ dmesg | grep BAT
[5.214762] ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery absent)

[5.211800] ACPI: AC Adapter [ACAD] (on-line)

Same problem with linux-image-3.10-3-amd64 (version 3.10.11-1).

I tried last version from unstable (3.14-1-amd64, version 3.14.12-1), but it
doesn't boot at all without acpi=off (see bug #754915).

Kernel 3.14-1-amd64 does not boot on laptop Acer B115-M. It stops on Loading,
please wait message. The problem is ACPI related, since I can boot adding
acpi=off to the kernel line in Grub.

I can boot normally with linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64 from stable (version
3.2.60-1+deb7u1) and linux-image-3.10-3-amd64 (version 3.10.11-1). In both
cases, the system boot and function normally, except for one ACPI problem: I
have always ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery absent) (so no
/sys/class/power_supply/BAT1) and I have always ACPI: AC Adapter [ACAD] (on-
line) even if the adapter is unplugged (so always
/sys/class/power_supply/ACAD/online = 1, even if unplugged).

If you need additional information, please ask.

2014-08-31 Thread Norbert Preining
Hi Michael,

On Mon, 01 Sep 2014, Michael Prokop wrote:
Which version of initramfs-tools did you use before?

in my aptitude.log I find:
[UPGRADE] initramfs-tools:amd64 0.115 - 0.116

   sh -x /usr/sbin/mkinitramfs -o /tmp/initramfs.output 2/tmp/mkinitramfs.log

Here it is.
