Bug#784579: [REGRESSION] vmwgfx black screen until X started

2015-08-31 Thread Hamilton Engineering
Hi Bernhard,

I'm so sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. Somehow I was
not notified that there was a new (your) message waiting to be read. The
good news is that adding "vmwgfx.enable_fbdev=1" to the kernel command
line definitely solves the problem! The system works as expected now.
The fix has been tested with 3 different computers and 2 different
VMWare versions (Workstation 7 and 11) and everything is good now.

Thanks again for the quick solution!

Markus

Bug#797601: linux-base: overlayfs rename to overlay causes issues with other packages

2015-08-31 Thread Florian Margaine
Package: linux-base
Version: 4.0
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The kernel has renamed overlayfs to overlay:

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=ef94b1864d1ed5be54376404bb23d22ed0481feb

However, it expected distributions to keep the old name around, because
userspace software might rely on it.

And it definitely does. lxc, at version 1.0.7 in debian/unstable, relies on
overlayfs for its lxc-clone facilities. At lxc 1.1.1, it has added support for
the name "overlay".

It means that right now, lxc-clone cannot be used on debian, since both
packages don't support each other.

Regards,
Florian Margaine

No, it allows distributions to carry the out-of-tree overlayfs as
"overlayfs". But we never had overlayfs before this.

This seems to have been fixed between 4.0 and 4.1, probably by:

commit d1fd836dcf00d2028c700c7e44d2c23404062c90
Author: Kees Cook
Date: Tue Apr 14 15:48:07 2015 -0700

mm: split ET_DYN ASLR from mmap ASLR

This is meant as a security improvement, but wasn't cc'd to stable and
might be hard to backport (I haven't looked closely).

The dependency should have been changed to xz-utils.

I'd like to get Debian running on my HPVMs again - 5.10 is really, REALLY old
by now.

Thanks,

Severity: important

On s390x and m68k, gcc-4.8 is used which will not be released with
stretch (#765380), so the severity of this bug will be bumped when we
get closer to the release (m68k isn't RC of course).

On a related note, ia64 used gcc-4.6, which was removed from the
archive a few days ago. Since ia64 has been dropped entirely and
no porters are left in Debian, maybe simply drop it from the
architectures list of src:linux?

Cheers,

Package: linux-2.6
Severity: wishlist

(Moving this topic from a debian-kernel thread to the BTS).

Would it be possible to turn on CONFIG_KALLSYMS_ALL in the Debian kernel
for Wheezy? It's a useful debugging option, and makes it easier to
implement useful tools like Ksplice that inspect the code and data
structures of the running kernel, in particular in relation to operating
on modules (one can use System.map to look up addresses for data
structures in the core kernel). Most other major Linux distributions
have had CONFIG_KALLSYMS_ALL enabled in their kernels for some time now
(RHEL, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc.).

The discussion so far of why this option is useful on the debian-kernel
thread is at:

.

Bug#797530: 32bit pie memory layout leaves only ~100MB between heap and stack

2015-08-31 Thread Christoph Berg
Source: linux
Version: 3.16.7-ckt11-1
Severity: important

I'm still seeing a memory layout for pie executables on 32 bit that
only leaves a bit over 100MB between heap and stack:

I thought this was fixed via this commit, but apparently it's not:

Comments/Problems:
The Kernel on the Netinst CD boots up and the installer shows its main menu.
The CD isn't detected. It is an ATAPI DVD-ROM drive on the IDE adapter
of the chipset.

The network interface adapter isn't detected either. It is an Intel
PRO 1G ethernet adapter (E1000) on the mainboard.

I guess the reason are some absent modules in the Kernel of the
installer image:

There is not any driver for it in the Kernel; it should be the
PIIX_IDE module.

Severity: serious

I realized that GDB doesn't work as it should.
When GDB should run *any* target application, it always stops with
SIGTRAP 0x.

Example:

stephan@itanic:~$ gdb man
GNU gdb (GDB) 7.4.1-debian

and "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "ia64-linux-gnu".

Debian Wheezy: with Kernel 3.5.5 (experimental), GDB 7.3 doesn't work
Debian Lenny: Kernel 2.6.26, a 'debootstrapped' Wheezy userland, GDB
7.4.1 *works*

Gentoo:Kernel 3.3.8, GDB 7.3.1 works

I'm surprised that GDB 7.4.1 works on Lenny in the chroot'd Wheezy
environment.

Please also note that the problem doesn't occur on Gentoo ia64.

In my opinion, it points to the Debian Kernel somehow...

Maybe the module is deactivated. You can try compile kernel [0].
