You must upgrade fully to stable before installing anything from unstable. There is no requirement in policy to add versioned dependencies in unstable when the minimum version is less than that in stable. Bug#815125: Boot failure with Debian linux 4.4.2 package
Hi Ben, Hi Matt, I can confirm as well that the latest package version 4.4.6-1 fixes the issue on a Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 8. Thanks a lot, Jérôme
Can We Implement A String Delimiter That Cannot Be In A String
Please forgive me if this is the wrong forum for this topic. I am trying to understand why the delimiter problem remains unsolved. The delimiter problem is the complication created by using valid string characters as string delimiters, making a string like this Mary's statement was, "I'm happy with Jill's "Thank you's, which included 'personal comments' relevant to each guest's favorite charity." difficult to work with as a string to be handled by a computer program. I am familiar with escaping characters, but that can get complicated, such as when using regex at the command line where the string has to be delimited for the shell to know what to do and that can make the simultaneous delimiting of the regex command extremely challenging. The solution seems almost obvious: create a delimiter that can be inserted where programmers need them but are not part of human language. If the delimiter was different for the start of a string vs then end, strings could nested and there never would be any confusion. What would it take to implement something like this, and why has this not been done already? -- Dan Allen Houston-DATA.COM 215 Marshall Street Houston, Texas 77006 713-806-8783 d...@houston-data.com

Bug#818577: spelling mistakes
Package: debian-kernel-handbook Version: 1.0.15 Dear maintainer, I've been reading at http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/index.html which I believe is related to the package "debian-kernel-handbook" as addressed here. I found a few spelling mistakes as following: http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-scope.html "... executed with superuser priviliges, either ..." -> privileges http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-modules.html "... are detected and neccessary kernel modules ..." -> necessary http://kernel-handbook.alioth.debian.org/ch-initramfs.html "... performs other neccessary initialization ..." -> necessary Hope that helps. Regards, Olivier

Bug#818502: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64: data corruption in KVM VM & hypervisor with Intel CPU with early IntelVT
Package: src:linux Version: 3.16.7-ckt20-1+deb8u4 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, I have very ugly and probably hard to analyze problem with filesystem corruption on KVM virtual and the hypervisor running on hardware with CPU from early IntelVT era (Both hypervisor and VM are Debian Jessie of course). I can report this problem meantime for hypervisor on Intel Xeon E5410 [1](Dell PowerEdge 1950) Intel Xeon E5430 [2](Dell PowerEdge 1950) Intel Core2 Duo E8400 [3] (some PC) the problem is NOT with the newer HW/CPU: Intel Xeon X5650 [4](Dell PowerEdge R710) Intel Xeon L5520 [5](Dell PowerEdge R710) Until Jessie we had no problems. After migration to Debian Jessie there was several times filesystem corruption on VM running monitoring several hosts using Icinga and writing performance data into RRD files. The snippets from syslog are produced with zfgrep -h -i -e 'Linux version ' -e Memory: -e EXT4 syslog-20*gz >/tmp/mong.syslog.txt attached... Now I invent the method for reproducing the problem in reasonable time. 1) Prepare a new VM storage 2G, RAM 256MiB 2) Install Debian Jessie (PXE, CD...) 200MB swap, root fs the rest 3) Shutdown a new VM and decrease memory allocation to 90MiB for it 4) Start VM and do some package management torture :). I used: while :; do apt install -y linux-source; sleep 10; apt remove --auto-remove -y linux-source; sleep 10; done On "faulty" CPU you get after a while: Unpacking gcc-4.9 (4.9.2-10) ... dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: unable to fsync updated status of `man-db': Read-only file system rm: cannot remove ‘/var/cache/etckeeper/packagelist.pre-install’: Read-only file system E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (2) E: Problem executing scripts DPkg::Post-Invoke 'if [ -x /usr/bin/etckeeper ]; then etckeeper post-install; fi' E: Sub-process returned an error code W: Not using locking for read only lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. Bug#818646: linux-image-4.4.0-1-amd64: CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is not set
Julien Cristau wrote on 19/03/16 20:09: On Sat, Mar 19, 2016 at 15:46:46 +1030, Arthur Marsh wrote: I usually run custom kernels based off the configuration of recent Debian kernels. I notice that as of 4.4.0-1-amd64 (and hence also linux-image-4.5.0-rc7-amd64) that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is not set and that disables the EMU10K ALSA sound driver which is needed for a card that I was considering adding to this machine. I do not know if this was an upstream or Debian change, intentional or not, but it is an unpleasant surprise to discover hardware support removed especially as at least one ALSA developer runs this hardware himself. See bugs #814855 and #815787. Cheers, Julien Thanks, but the rationale was really deeply buried in the bug reports rather than in the Debian changelog, which would have been more helpful if it stated what the change was to support and what modules would no longer be in the Debian kernel package as a result. My Athlon64 machine's onboard sound had one of its inputs fail and I wanted to use the Soundblaster Audigy card from this machine. Although I like building custom kernels, it is also really helpful to be able to run a stock kernel to compare things if a custom kernel has a problem. Regards, Arthur.

I'll pass this to the upstream developers. here's an update on the issue: apparently, the latest wheezy-security kernel somehow broke padlock, too. I don't see any of the error messages I get with the jessie kernel, but after entering the key at the cryptsetup prompt, it responds with "No key available with this passphrase". I now have no kernel left to successfully boot with padlock/dm-crypt. One might think "hardware issue" now, but I can rule this out, it did work before and is still working in userspace (patched openssl package, apache/ openvpn using the openssl padlock engine).
