Bug#821761: linux-image-4.5.0-1-amd64: [regression] switching from gdm Xorg vt to normal virtual console corrupts display until reboot
Package: src:linux Version: 4.5.1-1 Severity: normal When I upgraded to linux 4.5.1 I found that switching from a gdm Xorg vt to normal virtual console corrupts the display until I reboot. The display corruption is not static and is mostly black with some fuzz around the sides and sometimes pixels from the gdm vt are in the top of the display. This happens both with and without an external display plugged into the VGA port on the laptop. This does not happen with 4.4 but it does happen with 4.6 from experimental. I couldn't find any way to work around this issue other than a reboot. -- Package-specific info: ** Kernel log: boot messages should be attached ** Model information sys_vendor: LENOVO product_name: 0831CTO product_version: ThinkPad X201 Tablet chassis_vendor: LENOVO chassis_version: Not Available bios_vendor: LENOVO bios_version: 6QET62WW (1.32 ) board_vendor: LENOVO board_name: 0831CTO board_version: Not Available ** PCI devices: 00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller [8086:0044] (rev 02) Subsystem: Lenovo Core Processor DRAM Controller [17aa:2193] Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Lenovo Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [17aa:215a] Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx+ Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B+ ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- SERR- TAbort- Reset- FastB2B- PriDiscTmr- SecDiscTmr- DiscTmrStat- DiscTmrSERREn- Capabilities: [40] Express (v2) Root Port (Slot+), MSI 00 DevCap: MaxPayload 128 bytes, PhantFunc 0 ExtTag- RBE+ DevCtl: Report errors: Correctable- Non-Fatal- Fatal- Unsupported- RlxdOrd- ExtTag- PhantFunc- AuxPwr- NoSnoop- MaxPayload 128 bytes, MaxReadReq 128 bytes DevSta: CorrErr- UncorrErr- FatalErr- UnsuppReq- AuxPwr+ TransPend- LnkCap: Port #1, Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x1, ASPM L0s L1, Exit Latency L0s <1us, L1 <4us ClockPM- Surprise- LLActRep+ BwNot- ASPMOptComp- LnkCtl: ASPM Disabled; RCB 64 bytes Disabled- CommClk- ExtSynch- ClockPM- AutWidDis- BWInt- AutBWInt- LnkSta: Speed 2.5GT/s, Width x0, TrErr- Train- SlotClk+ DLActive- BWMgmt- ABWMgmt- SltCap: AttnBtn- PwrCtrl- MRL- AttnInd- PwrInd- HotPlug- Surprise- Slot #0, PowerLimit 10.000W; Interlock- NoCompl+ SltCtl: Enable: AttnBtn- PwrFlt- MRL- PresDet- CmdCplt- HPIrq- LinkChg- Control: AttnInd Unknown, PwrInd Unknown, Power- Interlock- SltSta: Status: AttnBtn- PowerFlt- MRL- CmdCplt- PresDet- Interlock- Changed: MRL- PresDet- LinkState- RootCtl: ErrCorrectable- ErrNon-Fatal- ErrFatal- PMEIntEna- CRSVisible- RootCap: CRSVisible- RootSta: PME ReqID , PMEStatus- PMEPending- DevCap2: Completion Timeout: Range BC, TimeoutDis+, LTR-, OBFF Not Supported ARIFwd- DevCtl2: Completion Timeout: 50us to 50ms, TimeoutDis-, LTR-, OBFF Disabled ARIFwd- LnkCtl2: Target Link Speed: 2.5GT/s, EnterCompliance- SpeedDis- Transmit Margin: Normal Operating Range, EnterModifiedCompliance- ComplianceSOS- Compliance De-emphasis: -6dB LnkSta2: Current De-emphasis Level: -6dB, EqualizationComplete-, EqualizationPhase1- EqualizationPhase2-, EqualizationPhase3-, LinkEqualizationRequest- Capabilities: [80] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit- Address: Data: Capabilities: [90] Subsystem: Lenovo 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port 1 [17aa:2164] Capabilities: [a0] Power Management version 2 Flags: PMEClk- DSI- D1- D2- AuxCurrent=0mA PME(D0+,D1-,D2-,D3hot+,D3cold+) Status: D0 NoSoftRst- PME-Enable- DSel=0 DScale=0 PME- Kernel driver in use: pcieport Kernel modules: shpchp 00:1c.4 PCI bridge [0604]: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset PCI Express Root Port 5 [8086:3b4a] (rev 06) (prog-if 00 [Normal decode]) Control: I/O+ Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR+ FastB2B- DisINTx- Status: Cap+ 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- SERR- TAbort- Reset- FastB2B-

Ah, I dimly remembered that this information could be stashed in the system firmware somewhere. It seems like the driver ought to look there first if EFI support is enabled (there is an in-kernel API for reading EFI variables). That will have to be developed upstream though. Could you run some comparison with ubuntu ppc: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCDownloads The only way to solve this situation is to solve the issue one by one (network and X at least). Once you are confident with one issue (say network), please do a open a new bug report (CC me). Thanks.

I find that suspend gives indications of working. However very little else appears to work. I do not have networking, I do not receive a login screen (lightDM), and I can not start X. I am not sure if anything works other then a virtual terminal. Perhaps this taints the results some. Kristen signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature
