Bug#841240: similar issue on 4.9-rc1

2016-10-19 Thread Adam Borowski
Lemme add: there's a similar, more serious issue on 4.9-rc1. x32 processes
fail not just on preadv but on apparently any startup of something linked
with glibc (although at least _exit() and write() do work).

I haven't yet had the tuits to bisect or debug what's the cause.

throw away the fruits (can dump them into a cake, etc), let the drink age
at least 3-6 months.

Bug#841357: linux-source-4.7: 'make allnoconfig' generates an allyesconfig

2016-10-19 Thread Andreas Ziegler
Package: linux-source-4.7
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

we are using the kernel source packages to generate minimized configurations
for particular use cases. As our tools only give us a partial configuration,
we need to expand our precomputed set of options to a full kernel config.

We do that by using the following command:

KCONFIG_ALLCONFIG="path_to_partial_conf" make allnoconfig

which should set all configuration options not present in the initial partial
configuration to 'n'.

With the source code in this package, all previously unset variables are set
to 'y' instead, leading to a much bigger configuration than we anticipate.

The cause for this lies in the Debian patch

debian/patches/features/all/Kbuild-kconfig-Verbose-version-of-listnewconfig.patch

which #defines the newly introduced SYMBOL_NEW macro in scripts/kconfig/expr.h
to the same value (0x20) as SYMBOL_ALLNOCONFIG_Y in the previous line.

This leads to all new values being treated as if they were marked in Kconfig to
be set to "y" if the are not found in the initial seed configuration when we
try to build 'make allnoconfig' - which is exactly the opposite of a 'noconfig'.

* How to reproduce (in the Linux source tree from this package):
$> make allnoconfig
$> cat .config | grep '=y' | wc -l
8112
$> make allyesconfig
$> cat .config | grep '=y' | wc -l
8112

* Expected outcome (with the above mentioned patch un-applied or the #define
changed to '#define SYMBOL_NEW 0x40'):
$> make allnoconfig
$> cat .config | grep '=y' | wc -l
206

Trent also stated that under Windows the keyboard is *not* shown as
connected, so it seems the receiver does provide enough information to
tell that it's not currently connected.

I agree, if the Windows driver can do this the Linux driver should also
be able to do so.

The kernel can't possibly detect a device that is not, in some sense,
connected to the PC.  The Unifying Receiver seems to forward
information from the wireless devices that have been associated with
it, as if they are USB devices.  If it remembers and imitates a device
that has since been reassigned to another receiver, there is probably
nothing Linux can to do to detect that.

I think you should take this up with Logitech technical support.

The fact that the device isn't connected to the PC should make it
obvious that it shouldn't show up in the list of connected devices.
Perhaps the bug is not in the kernel but in the applet, though, if it
had enough information to filter those devices.

Bug#841289: [drm/i915] GPU HANG: ecode 9:0:0xfffffffe, in Xorg [2507], reason: Engine(s) hung, action: reset

2016-10-19 Thread Jonas Meurer
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.7.6-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hello,

recently, something on my system related to drm/i915 broke. Since no
xserver/drm packages have been upgraded, I strongly suspect the latest
linux kernel upgrade to be the culprit.

Since several days, the X server on my Lenovo Thinkpad T460 sometimes
freezes, apparently when gnome locks and turns of the screen after some
time of inactivity. This renders the system completely unusable, it
seems to not react at all anymore. Also changing to a text consoly
(tty) doesn't work.

Below you find a copy of the relevant syslog entries. Unfortunately,
since the system is rendered unusable, I'm not able to save the crash
details from /sys/class/drm/card0/error. After reboot, it obviously is
empty again.

Please tell me if I can do anything more to debug this bug. It's very
annoying as it sometimes implies loosing things that you just worked on.

Unfortunately, I don't know another way to reproduce the bug apart from
waiting for the automatic screen lock. Then you have to be (un)lucky
because it doesn't freeze every time.

Cheers,
 jonas

Quick Query

2016-10-19 Thread Joe Thomas
Hi,

I'm writing to you having come across dug.net.pl whilst doing some research on
gaming.

It got me thinking, and I was wondering if you might like me to write a
well-informed and researched guide to speeding up your PC on no budget for you?

As a gamer myself, I have tweaked my PC a lot over the years for gaming
purposes. I thought if you liked it, you might feature it? Or at least provide
a little feedback?

There would be no cost involved. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll
write an article and send it over.

Sincerely,

Joe Thomas

It also shows up in the battery applet in Mate.

I think either the kernel or the applet should ignore it since it's not
plugged into the PC (it doesn't actually work BTW.)

Problem exists in 4.7.0 and up to the latest kernel I could find which
was 4.8.0-rc8.
