Bug#922274: thinkpad_acpi: Error probing battery 2 (Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e)

2019-02-13 Thread Daniel Leidert
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.19.20-1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Since some time I get these error messages during startup (however, the system
starts without any issue):

[ 31.210320] ACPI: \_SB_.PCI0.LPCB.EC__.HKEY: BCTG evaluated but flagged as
error

[ 31.210468] battery: extension unregistered: ThinkPad Battery Extension
[ 31.210545] battery: ACPI: Battery Slot [BAT1] (battery present)

Searching for this issue I found these resources:

https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/10552407/
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=238170

I haven't checked, if the suggested patch has already been accepted into
the kernel. If yes, my model is probably missing. So maybe this information
helps, to fix the kernel to fix the issue on my system too:

At first, thanks a lot for your analysis.

Now my question, does this still happen in buster or sid? Since I could not
reproduce the problem in buster, but very well in Ubuntu Bionic, I assume
it has been healed the the past weeks, possibly by the latest glib2 upstream
release - although I didn't find anything obvious in the sources.

Jens Axboe has determined that the proper fix is quite different:

http://git.kernel.dk/cgit/linux-block/commit/?h=for-linus=85bd6e61f34dffa8ec2dc75ff3c02ee7b2f1cbce

This patch is already on its way to stable branches. I have tested it
and confirmed that it resolves the problem.

(The line I originally found seems to actually be a mistake introduced
in the master branch, but it somehow also prevents the deadlock).

Bug#922234: - behavior cannot be reproduced

2019-02-13 Thread Franz Danzi

I just wanted to let you know the behavior cannot be reproduced with
100% success. After I wrote the initial bugreport I performed updates
with synaptic and then a reboot. With "touch /forcefsck" first and then
reboot the system came up normal.

Bug#922234: Stretch stuck after loading initial ramdisk

2019-02-13 Thread Franz Danzi

Package: linux-image-amd64
Version: 4.9+80+deb9u6

Trying to boot will lead to a hung system after the message "loading
initial ramdisk". Ctrl-Alt-Del will not work. I have to switch off the
machine the hard way.

Workaround I:
This behavior first appeared a while ago (maybe 2-3 months) after an
update (as usual simply with synaptic) and after switching the machine
off and on again the second try was always successful.

Workaround II:
Today the behavior changed and the problem became more severe. Switching
the machine off and on again will no longer solve the problem. Instead I
boot the same kernel into recovery mode. Then I press Ctrl-D to continue
the boot process and everything seems normal.

Environment:
There are 3 operating systems present on my machine. Windows10, Debian
Jessie and Debian Stretch. All started by the bootloader of Stretch.
I use the XFCE Desktop environment.
Kernel: Linux deb9tst 4.9.0-8-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.9.130-2 (2018-10-27)
x86_64 GNU/Linux

An additional remark:
I remember there was quite recently a kernel update which asked me
something about the configuration. I had the options to view the
configurations, change them and so on. I decided to just use the old
configuration file. The problem started short after this.

Bug#922146: Narrowed problem down. Found workaround

2019-02-13 Thread azura
Dear Maintainer,

After reading through other bugreports with hibernation problems, I was
pointed into a possible workaround (see Bug#902416):

Usually, I use "systemctl hibernate" to go into hibernation. The screen
turns black and the system powers down. However, if I use
$ sudo sh -c "echo 'disk' > /sys/power/state"
hibernation and booting works all fine!
Please note: using this method, the screen turns off shortly before
turning on again (while saving memory to disk) before it turns off
finally and the system is powered off. This behaviour was also present
using jessie.

I am not sure why this makes such a difference.
I do have some files in /lib/systemd/system-sleep/ (like wacom, hdparm
(I can attach them if desired)) and I moved them somewhere else and
tried again "systemctl hibernate". However, the screen didn't turn on
again after waking. I managed to obtain a "journalctl -alb" while having
the screen turned off. It contains a lot gdm3 errors about modeset and
"page flip failed". But see for yourselves (attached as file due to the
size of the log).
(I cut the log down. It starts at the moment I typed in echo 'disk' ...)

I hope my findings help to solve the problem.

Bug#922204: linux-image-4.19.0-3-armmp-lpae: Kernel mode NEON support should be enabled

2019-02-13 Thread Ard Biesheuvel
Package: linux-image-4.19.0-3-armmp-lpae
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Currently, the 32-bit ARM kernels are built without support for kernel mode
NEON, which means that none of the modules that depend on it are built either.

This mostly affects crypto drivers, as well as RAID6 and XOR. This is mostly a
performance problem, although the fact that the non-NEON AES is not time
invariant implies that systems may be susceptible to cache timing attacks
needlessly.

Note that there is also a runtime check, so even with
CONFIG_KERNEL_MODE_NEON=y, systems without a NEON implementation will still run
as before.

The XOR and RAID6 code will automatically be built with NEON support once the
CONFIG_KERNEL_MODE_NEON option is set. For the crypto part, the following ones
should be set to =m as well. (The CE ones rely on ARMv8 crypto instructions so
they are not as relevant, but they can easily be enabled at the same time)

config CRYPTO_SHA1_ARM_NEON
config CRYPTO_AES_ARM_BS
config CRYPTO_CHACHA20_NEON

config CRYPTO_SHA1_ARM_CE
config CRYPTO_SHA2_ARM_CE
config CRYPTO_AES_ARM_CE
config CRYPTO_GHASH_ARM_CE
config CRYPTO_CRCT10DIF_ARM_CE
config CRYPTO_CRC32_ARM_CE

Note that this applies equally to the non-LPAE configuration.
