Bug#949256: linux-image-5.4.0-2-amd64: zram-tools blocks shutdown (regression since 5.2)
Package: src:linux Version: 5.4.8-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, After I did apt-get dist-upgrade which led to installing kernel 5.4, i noticed that shutdown of my laptop started to take forever, with the messages you can see on the following photos https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18CTuZTs49j2X2vMGMqA-P9czLjMKDNHX?usp=sharing either removing zram-tools package or using linux-image-5.2.0-3-amd64 @ 5.2.17-1 which I had before the dist-upgrade makes the problem go away. Since 5.4 changelog mentions zram, I suspect that it was the kernel that introduced this regression. -- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 5.4.0-2-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc version 9.2.1 20200104 (Debian 9.2.1-22)) #1 SMP Debian 5.4.8-1 (2020-01-05) ** Command line: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-5.4.0-2-amd64 root=UUID=d814e87a-f8b6-4af0-82af-f910803c8ae7 ro quiet elevator=noop ** Not tainted ** Kernel log: [4.920496] systemd[1]: Mounted FUSE Control File System. initramfs-tools 0.136 release
This release fixes a number of bugs reported to Debian. The most obvious of these was the appearance of error messages from kmod about missing modules.builtin.bin. mkinitramfs now enables multithreaded xz compression (this was already done for gzip/pigz). It includes drivers in the initramfs that are needed by some ChromeOS devices and by PowerPC Macs, and includes the f2fs filesystem by default. Possible breaking changes: - I removed several workarounds and special cases that should no longer be needed - The /run/initramfs directory is no longer world-readable Ben. I use the uvesafb framebuffer, that uses a helper process v86d that emulates 8086 BIOS to change video modes. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? After some recent udev update, udev sets the "noexec" flag on the /dev/ filesystem. It breaks programs that want to map devices with PROT_EXEC, such as v86d. uvesafb doesn't work, because v86d can't map memory with the PROT_EXEC flag. if I do "mount -o remount, exec /dev", v86d starts normally and uvesafb works. * What was the outcome of this action? The vm86d program fails with this error: openat(AT_FDCWD, "/dev/zero", O_RDWR) = 4 mmap(0x1000, 655360, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC, MAP_SHARED|MAP_FIXED, 4, 0) = -1 EPERM (Operace není povolena) dup(2) = 5 fcntl(5, F_GETFL) = 0x8001 (flags O_WRONLY|O_LARGEFILE) close(5)= 0 write(2, "mmap /dev/zero: Operation not pe"..., 40mmap /dev/zero: Operation not permitted ) = 40 close(4)= 0 ioperm(0, 0x400, 1) = 0 iopl(3) = 0 exit_group(-1) = ? * What outcome did you expect instead? The mmap syscall should succeed: openat(AT_FDCWD, "/dev/zero", O_RDWR) = 4 mmap(0x1000, 655360, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC, MAP_SHARED|MAP_FIXED, 4, 0) = 0x1000 close(4)= 0 openat(AT_FDCWD, "/dev/mem", O_RDWR)= 4 mmap(NULL, 1282, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC, MAP_SHARED|MAP_FIXED, 4, 0) = 0 mmap(0xa, 393216, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE|PROT_EXEC, MAP_SHARED|MAP_FIXED, 4, 0xa) = 0xa close(4)= 0 ioperm(0, 0x400, 1) = 0 iopl(3) = 0 *** End of the template - remove these template lines *** -- Package-specific info: -- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers unreleased APT policy: (500, 'unreleased'), (500, 'unstable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386, x32, riscv64 Kernel: Linux 5.2.0-2-rt-amd64 (SMP w/12 CPU cores; PREEMPT) Locale: LANG=cs_CZ.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=cs_CZ.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=cs_CZ.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Init: sysvinit (via /sbin/init) Versions of packages udev depends on: ii adduser 3.118 ii dpkg 1.19.7 ii libacl1 2.2.53-4 ii libblkid12.34-0.1 ii libc62.29-1 ii libkmod2 26-2 ii libselinux1 2.9-2+b2 ii libudev1 242-7 ii util-linux 2.34-0.1 udev recommends no packages. udev suggests no packages. In 0.130, this command would generate initrd images for all kernels, in 0.133, it is a nop. The reason is that get_sorted_versions now only lists kernels with existing initrd images, which makes the -c option somewhat useless. At least in our case this created unbootable systems after an upgrade to buster. -- Package-specific info: -- System Information: Debian Release: 9.8 APT prefers stable APT policy: (990, 'stable'), (500, 'unstable-debug'), (500, 'testing-debug'), (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable-debug'), (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (1, 'experimental-debug'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386, x32 Kernel: Linux 4.19.27-041927-generic (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=POSIX, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8), LANGUAGE=POSIX (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) Versions of packages initramfs-tools depends on: ii initramfs-tools-core 0.133 ii linux-base4.5 -- no debconf information --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: initramfs-tools Source-Version: 0.136 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of initramfs-tools, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. It checks for a swap device referenced by the RESUME variable. The RESUME_OFFSET variable is additionally used to point to a file in the RESUME device that acts as the swap device. In this case, since RESUME points to a standard file system, a warning is generated: W: initramfs-tools configuration sets RESUME=$RESUME W: but no matching swap device is available. The following contains a possible solution to check for a swap file. It relies on a set RESUME_OFFSET variable indicating a swap file. At least two files should be modified: 1) the resume hook script and 2) the mkinitramfs script. The resume script contains the following line numbered items. The unnumbered lines contain a possible fix to check for the use of a swap file. 20 # First check if a location is set and is a valid swap partition. 21 # If so, the config file will be copied in and there is nothing to do. 22 if [ -n "$RESUME" ] && [ "$RESUME" != auto ]; then 23 if [ "$RESUME" = none ]; then 24 exit 0 25 fi if resume_dev_node="$(resolve_device "$RESUME")"; then if [ -z "$RESUME_OFFSET" ] && \ blkid -p -n swap "$resume_dev_node" >/dev/null 2>&1; then exit 0 fi # Assume RESUME_OFFSET is a proper offset pointing to # the first data block of an inode in RESUME. # Then, the swap filename should be in /proc/swaps. # Get largest filename that is NOT a /dev/... for resume_filename in $( grep -v ^/dev/ /proc/swaps | grep ^/ | sort -rnk3 | cut -d " " -f 1 ); do if [ -n "$resume_filename" ] && \ blkid -p -n swap "$resume_filename" >/dev/null 2>&1; then exit 0 fi break done echo >&2 "W: initramfs-tools configuration sets RESUME=$RESUME and echo >&2 "W: RESUME_OFFSET=$RESUME_OFFSET" echo >&2 "W: but no matching swap file is available." 29 fi 30 31 echo >&2 "W: initramfs-tools configuration sets RESUME=$RESUME" 32 echo >&2 "W: but no matching swap device is available." 33 fi Getting a file name from an inode from a block offset might be done, but is problematic as tools related to this are dependent on the file system. For ext*, this could be: resume_inode=$( debugfs -R "icheck $RESUME_OFFSET" $resume_dev_node 2>/dev/null | tail -1 | cut -f2 ) resume_fn=$( debugfs -R "ncheck ${RESUME_INODE}" ${RESUME_DEV} 2>/dev/null | tail -1 | cut -f2 ) However, this process is not generic and may not be available for every file system. Additionally, the mkinitramfs script (/usr/sbin/mkinitramfs) does not export the RESUME_OFFSET variable. It should be exported for use by the hook scripts. 242 # Export environment for hook scripts. 243 # 244 export MODULESDIR 245 export version 246 export CONFDIR 247 export DESTDIR 248 export DPKG_ARCH 249 export verbose 250 export MODULES 251 export BUSYBOX 252 export COMPCACHE_SIZE 253 export RESUME export RESUME_OFFSET 254 -- System Information: Debian Release: buster/sid APT prefers eoan-updates APT policy: (500, 'eoan-updates'), (500, 'eoan-security'), (500, 'eoan'), (100, 'eoan-backports') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Foreign Architectures: i386 Kernel: Linux 5.3.0-23-generic (SMP w/8 CPU cores) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE, TAINT_OOT_MODULE, TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8),

It's not a specific goal, but the symlinks should not be broken. This seems to be a regression in cpio: the filename restrictions requested by this option are being applied to symlink targets, whereas they should only be applied to destination filenames and hard link targets. Then regenerated initrd with update-initramfs. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- On Sun, 03 Feb 2019 22:15:12 +0100 Ben Hutchings wrote: > On Fri, 11 Jan 2019 15:20:04 +0600 Tech Knowledge < > discover...@gmail.com> wrote: > > Just added the information as requested. > > This might be the same as bug #917607 which was fixed in udev 240-4. > Can you check whether upgrading udev fixes this? According to NEWS this should work. The reason is does not is because UUID= processing is only done for the resume kernel parameter (see init lines 123-128). No processing is done for the RESUME shell variable included from conf.d. Recognizing that conf.d/resume is being sourced as a script in init, I've created a hack to fix by adding the processing in the resume file. My resume file looks like this: """ RESUME=UUID=deadbeef-cafe-dead-beef-cafedeadbeef case $RESUME in UUID=*) RESUME="/dev/disk/by-uuid/${RESUME#UUID=}" esac """ Incidentally, I believe this is the issue in #872664. I chose to create a new bug because that one is unnecessarily specific. The bug applies to all versions on all platforms. I suggest that the case be moved out of the resume= kernel param handling and added just after line 206, before the "resume" variable is set. Actually, I see no reason to use the RESUME variable aside from the fact that its what you're supposed to use in the conf.d/resume file. But its confusing and inconsistent to provide "resume=UUID=" as the kernel parameter and "RESUME=UUID=" in the conf.d/resume file. Attached is a patch exemplifying my proposed changes (not tested). The patch should allow for documentation to notify about the depreciation of RESUME= in conf.d/resume and to start using resume= instead, but to continue being backwards compatible with the old syntax. The hooks scripts would need to be updated to account for the new variable (pretty trivial change, something like "RESUME=${RESUME:-$resume}"). Bug#948041: impossible to update libbpf without updating the kernel

"Consistent versioning across distributions." Maybe, but the kernel is also versioned consistently. "No ties to any specific kernel, transparent handling of older kernels." What? Either they are upstream for it or patch the source. But this point means it can't be a direct mirror. So what is it? "Continuous integration testing via TravisCI." "Static code analysis via LGTM and Coverity." Both are not restricted to this repo. > > If I'm reading that correctly, the intent appears to be that it would > > allow faster libbpf upgrades. > Yes, one of my intent. Faster and independent. And how does it do that, without being upstream of the source? Sorry, but I intend to end this discussion here. Bug#949231: linux-image-4.19.0-6-amd64: USB3 stops working after resume from disk
Package: src:linux Version: 4.19.67-2+deb10u2 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, after a suspend-to-disk / resume cycle the front side USB3 Ports on my ESPRIMO Q900 no loger work. FYI, reportbug told me that: Your version of linux-image-4.19.0-6-amd64 (4.19.67-2+deb10u2) is newer than that in Debian! This was a stretch + bpo kernel system upgraded to buster, my guess is that's the reason for the kernel version. FWIW the problem did not occur with 4.19.0-5-bpo.
