Bug#963493: Repeatable hard lockup running strace testsuite using 4.19.118+2+deb10u1, 4.19.98+1+deb10u1 works fine

2020-06-25 Thread Steve McIntyre
OK, so I've just bisected down the stable 4.19.y branch from 4.19.98
to 4.19.118. What I've found is:

e58f543fc7c0926f31a49619c1a3648e49e8d233 is the first bad commit
commit e58f543fc7c0926f31a49619c1a3648e49e8d233
Author: Jann Horn
Date: Thu Sep 13 18:12:09 2018 +0200

apparmor: don't try to replace stale label in ptrace access check

[ Upstream commit 1f8266ff58840d698a1e96d2274189de1bdf7969 ]

As a comment above begin_current_label_crit_section() explains,
begin_current_label_crit_section() must run in sleepable context because
when label_is_stale() is true, aa_replace_current_label() runs, which uses
prepare_creds(), which can sleep.
Until now, the ptrace access check (which runs with a task lock held)
violated this rule.

Also add a might_sleep() assertion to begin_current_label_crit_section(),
because asserts are less likely to be ignored than comments.

Fixes: b2d09ae449ced ("apparmor: move ptrace checks to using labels")

Considering I'm running strace build tests to provoke this bug,
finding the failure in a commit talking about ptrace changes does look
very suspicious...!

I’ve just verified that the upstream-merged fix, appearing in
linux-libc-dev 5.7.6-1 in sid, fixes this permanently.

Bug#949020: linux-image-5.6.0-2-amd64: Lenovo poweroff/suspend failure

2020-06-25 Thread Bjørn Mork
Package: src:linux
Followup-For: Bug #949020

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA512

Just confirming that this issue is still present, causing a terrible
user experience when upgrading from Buster to Bullseye on a Lenovo
laptop. Verified on a 4th Gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon.

Setting intel_iommu=off is confirmed as workaround.

I understand from the upstream discussion that this is mostly a
Lenovo firmware issue. But I still believe something needs to be
done in Debian to avoid every Lenovo user having to discover this
bug report and implement the workaround manually. After first
experiencing a complete system failure when trying to suspend
the system. A feature which worked without a flaw on Debian
Buster.

Bug#963689: linux-image-5.6.0-2-powerpc: stuck at 'pmac32_cpufreq' when booting

2020-06-25 Thread Giuseppe Sacco
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.6.14-2
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
I just updated an Apple PowerBook G4 from debian 8 (latest officially
released version for powerpc) to unstable.
The latest running kernel il 3.16 while the new 5.6.0 does not boot the
machine. While booting, the last lines shown on the screen are:

pmac32_cpufreq: registering PowerMac CPU frequency driver
pamc32_cpufreq: Low: 667 MHz, High: 867 Mhz, Boot: 667 MHz

then no more lines are printed. I waited about 5 minutes before powring
off the machine. Rebooting with old kernel works.

How may I collect more information?

Bye,
Giuseppe

Hi Ben,

Setting CONFIG_NVME_HWMON=y will allow sensors from NVMe devices to be exposed
through the hwmon framenwork.

This is very practical for using with thinkfan, where I want to set fan speed
depending also on the temperature of my SSD.

Thanks in advance!

Greetings,
Lee

Version: 1:1.3.4-2.5
Severity: grave
Tags: security
Justification: user security hole

I have an NFS client and server both running Debian. I recently
upgraded them both to buster.

I discovered today that the regular process umask has been ignored on
my nfs mounts since the upgrade, and all files and directories are
being created a+rw.

On the client, the fstab fstype is nfs4 and the mount options are
hard, intr,bg,noatime. The relevant datasets are exported
rw,no_root_squash,no_subtree_check from the server.

In researching this, I stumbled across
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nfs-utils/+bug/1779736 and
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1667761 which indicate the
problem is present elsewhere as well. Adding vers=4.1 to my client's
mount options completely resolved the problem. (Though now I have a
couple weeks' worth of files with unintentionally open permissions to
wade through.)

I tagged this as security and grave because it opens up quite a few
scenarios for users to receive privileges they shouldn't, and for
other potential mischief (placing malicious executables in
world-writable directories, etc).

The server is indeed running zfs with its default acltype setting
(off). As the Ubuntu bug report shows, mounting with noacl doesn't
resolve the behavior either. The RedHat bug occurred with an OpenWRT
server, unlikely to be running zfs. I do not believe this bug should
be pinned down to ZFS; a filesystem not supporting ACLs should not
result in umask 0 for all clients in any scenario.

Package: src:linux

Severity: important

Somewhere between linux-image-4.19.0-8-amd64/4.19.98+1+deb10u1 and
linux-image-4.19.0-9-amd64/4.19.118+2 NFS, in particular v4 got broken.
Mounting an appropriate filesystem became unreliable, and once mounted
behavior is unpredictable.

In particular in the problematic case `umask 022 ; touch foo ; ls -l foo`
yields a -rw-rw-rw- file.

This occurs if *both* the server *and* client are on 4.19.118+2. I have
confirmed this does NOT occur if the server is on a 4.9 kernel. I have
also confirmed this does NOT occur if the client is on a 4.9 or
4.19.98+1+deb10u1 kernel.

Recently, the Loongson64, aka loongson-3 switch to device-tree, and
the console cannot accept input anymore due to SERIAL_OF_PLATFORM is
not enabled.

While SERIAL_OF_PLATFORM depends on OF, we need to enable it at the same time.

Don't backport this modification to 4.19, since the switch is after 4.19.

The Debian Linux kernel fails to build from source for all kernels > 5.5.17-1,
as can be seen here:
https://buildd.debian.org/status/logs.php?pkg=linux=hppa

During build a 32-bit Linux kernel and a 64-bit Linux kernel is built.
The 32-build builds succeeds, the 64-bit build fails.

The 64bit build fails like this:

make[3]: Leaving directory '/home/deller/build/linux/linux-5.6.7'
dh_strip --no-automatic-dbgsym -Xvmlinux
strip: debian/linux-image-5.6.0-1-parisc64/boot/vmlinuz-5.6.0-1-parisc64: file

debian/linux-image-5.6.0-1-parisc64/boot/vmlinuz-5.6.0-1-parisc64 returned exit
code 1
dh_strip: error: Aborting due to earlier error

Reverting this debian commit fixes the build again:

commit 59a5af36cbf1cc01ef48b91719f999a699d99fab
Author: Ben Hutchings
Date: Sun Apr 19 19:49:03 2020 +0100
Use debhelper compatibility level 12
debhelper started complaining about level 9, so it's time to upgrade
again.
* Build-Depend on debhelper-compat and remove debian/compat
(also in the signed package template)
...

So, apparently something changed how debhelper starts the strip command.
Please note, that for a 64-bit vmlinux file,
hppa64-linux-gnu-strip
is needed instead of
hppa-linux-gnu-strip
although I'm not sure if this is the problem.

Any idea?

Hi Ben and others.

Can the staging (or the more mature Samsung) exfat be enabled? It would
surely be very useful to experiment with it (and find bugs and, possibly,
have better performance than FUSE tools).

Thanks in advance,

Rogério Brito.

Dear Maintainer,

I just tested kernel 5.6.4 from experimental, and noticed that it doesn't
enable hwmon sensors for nvme drives which have been available for some
time already.

I'm not sure why upstream doesn't enable it by default, but it works very well
in general. Please enable CONFIG_NVME_HWMON=y to expose that to Debian build
of the kernel.

Thanks!

https://buildd.debian.org/status/fetch.php?pkg=systemd=x32=245.2-1=1584573299=0

The failures seem to be in the testsuite (assuming the main code has
been built before it gets build) only. They boil down to multiple
instances of:

../src/test/test-seccomp.c:562:27: error: format ‘%d’ expects argument of type
‘int’, but argument 8 has type ‘long unsigned int’ [-Werror=format=]
  562 | log_debug("arch %s: SCMP_SYS(mmap) = %d",
seccomp_arch_to_string(arch), SCMP_SYS(mmap));

Here, SCMP_SYS(mmap) is an unsigned long, probably because that’s
what the native size type is.

If this is an int on other architectures, casting it to int might
be safe, as sizeof(long) == sizeof(int) on x32, but the safer path
would be changing it to long:

log_debug("arch %s: SCMP_SYS(mmap) = %ld",
seccomp_arch_to_string(arch), (long)SCMP_SYS(mmap));

Similar for all other occurrences of SCMP_SYS, I guess.
