Bug#1017936: linux-image-5.10.0-17-amd64: ILO4 remote console keyboard not working after upgrade to kernel 5 (buster to bullseye)

2022-08-22 Thread Denis Sbragion
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.10.136-1
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream

After upgrading from buster to bullseye, and so from kernel 4.X to kernel
5.x, ILO4 remote console keyboard stopped working. Hardware is an HPE
ProLiant MicroServer Generation 8 with ILO4 version 2.80, which is the
latest available on the HP support site.

After a bit of investigation I found this to be related to IOMMU (which I
don't even know what it is), with error messages like the following ones
reported in dmesg after connecting to the ILO4 console:

[ 57.124666] DMAR: DRHD: handling fault status reg 2
[ 57.124729] DMAR: [INTR-REMAP] Request device [01:00.0] fault index 15
[fault reason 38] Blocked an interrupt request due to source-id verification
failure

I tried setting "intel_iommu=off" on the kernel command line, using
/etc/default/grub, following the somewhat related bug described here:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=995773

Surprisingly in my case it made no difference. It was like the parameter
was ignored, even though it was clearly reported in the dmesg boot log. To
solve the problem I had to disable the IOMMU feature in the BIOS, as
suggested near the end of the following page, again related to a different
IOMMU problem:

https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-c04565693

I have to add that while investigating I found few other users reporting
the same problem, or similar ILO4 console problems, also on different Linux
distribution using kernel 5.X.

Hope it helps.

Bug#1017915: btrfs: space cache corruption and potential double allocations

2022-08-22 Thread Christoph Anton Mitterer
Source: linux
Version: 5.18.16-1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream patch

Hey.

This is merely a heads up, that a potentially pretty nasty data corruption
issue has been found in btrfs.

As far as I understand:
It was introduced in 5.12, has the highest chances to occur with
free space cache v2, but may also happen with v1 or even nospace_cache.
v2 was made default with btrfs-progs 5.15.

It seems that it may in principle affect data and metadata, so could range from
single file corruptions to complete fs breakage?

The patch, which AFAICS hasn't been submitted to linux-stable yet, can be found
here:
https://lore.kernel.org/linux-btrfs/cover.1660690698.git.osan...@fb.com/
A more in-depth description can be found in it's first commit.

Some others and I myself have asked some further questions about the issue
(how one can detect any corruptions, and so on), which can also be found
in the very same mail thread.

Not sure if the above patch is already production read, but at least it would
be quite helpful if it could be cherry-picked for testing/sid as soon as it has
landed in linux-stable.

Thanks,
Chris.

Bug#1017894: linux-image-5.18.0-4-arm64: Kernel oops triggered by heavy network load on ax88179_178a

2022-08-22 Thread Simon Tatham
Renato Gallo wrote:

I'm happy to, but how? I can't find a package of 5.19.x or 6.x anywhere
in buster-backports. Searching on packages.debian.org turns up
linux-image-5.19.0-trunk-arm64 in the experimental distribution, and no
6.0 at all.

I'd really rather not have to _build_ a kernel on a Raspberry Pi - even
on a Pi 4 that would take ages! So I guess I should try installing the
experimental 5.19 alongside my buster kernels and hope nothing goes too
badly wrong?

Assuming I've correctly identified the upstream git commit that's the
culprit, it looks as if the unwanted FLAG_SEND_ZLP is still in 5.19.1,
but not in 5.19.2. If I'm reading packages.debian.org right, that means
the 5.19 Debian kernel I've found is still likely to contain the bug.

(And 6.0 has had the FLAG_SEND_ZLP reverted as well.)

Cheers,
Simon

Having said that...

Cloning https://salsa.debian.org/kernel-team/linux.git and running

  git log debian/5.18.14-1..debian/5.18.16-1 -G ax88179_178a

identifies commit 6c1dd4fd0a9fb8a1c523c22ac30f76d2067d23dd, which bumps
the upstream kernel version from 5.18.14 to 5.18.15 and mentions in the
upstream changelog "net: usb: ax88179_178a needs FLAG_SEND_ZLP".

I still haven't figured out how to directly look up a range of commit
ids in the upstream kernel repo. However, searching for that message
text in the upstream repo is enough to track down commit
36a15e1cb134c0395261ba1940762703f778438c (13th June) that seems to be
the change in question - but also, commit
6fd2c17fb6e02a8c0ab51df1cfec82ce96b8e83d (8th August) reverting it
again. So it looks as if this Debian kernel has the change but not the
revert.

Bug#1017894: linux-image-5.18.0-4-arm64: Kernel oops triggered by heavy network load on ax88179_178a

2022-08-22 Thread Simon Tatham
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.18.16-1
Severity: normal

My home firewall/router is a Raspberry Pi 4 running arm64 buster, with
a StarTech dual USB3 gigabit-ethernet dongle to give it enough network
ports.

In a routine apt update, the linux-image-5.18.0-4-arm64 package was
installed, and I rebooted into it. Everything appeared stable until I
attempted my first video call of the day (on a different machine, of
course, but with all the packets routed through the Pi), and then I
suffered a network fault within about 20 seconds.

Checking the kernel logs, at the time of the crash a stack trace
appeared in 'dmesg' with the heading

ethWORLD (ax88179_178a): transmit queue 0 timed out

The full oops and crash dump is attached in oops.txt.

ethWORLD is the name for my ethernet device that talks to the outside
world, by speaking PPPoE to my DSL router. It's one of the two ports
on the StarTech dongle I mention above. (The other one talks to my
wifi, which was idle at the time, so I didn't notice whether there was
any problem there.)

Apparently the effect of this kernel oops was to stop any further
outgoing traffic on ethWORLD. I could still receive packets (I could
even hear my colleague on the video call commenting that I didn't seem
to be responding), but after another minute or so, my device was
unable to respond to a routine PPPoE ping from the ISP, which
terminated the rest of my session.

I was able to reactivate the interface without a reboot by bouncing it
using ifdown/ifup. The network was stable for low traffic like SSH or
reading web pages, but the crash was pretty reliably repeatable within
the first few seconds of any video call I tried to participate in. A
full reboot made no difference either.

Reverting to the previous kernel version installed on the machine
(Package: linux-image-5.18.0-3-arm64, Version: 5.18.14-1) made the
problem go away. So it seems to be specific to the difference between
those two kernels.

(I would be happy to go through a list of kernel git commits between
those two kernels and see if anything jumped out at me, but I'm sorry
to say that I have no idea how to get from a Debian kernel
package/version to a kernel git commit id.)

Package: src:linux

Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The new kernel in Debian 11.4 seems unstable and crashes when serving
NFS. On two different computers, these lockups happens within minutes,
typically when a client runs firefox on an NFS-mounted home directory.
Typically the servers lock up without any printout, but on one occasion,
the following was logged:
