Bug#563134: Info received (Bug#563134: Info received (IDE hard drive not seen by Debian kernel packages since 2.6.31))

2010-03-20 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
linux-image-2.6.32-4-686 fixes this bug

All previous linux-image-2.6 packages after linux-image-2.6.30 have
the bug, making the kernel unbootable and very difficult to
debug. I suspect the new pata drivers fixed the problem.

Bug#563134: boot hard drive IDE interface not found; no ide-gd driver found in dmesg

2009-12-30 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Package: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686 (version 2.6.32-3)

Version: unstable

Severity: show stopper

Description:

Boot aborts and dumps to busybox terminal as per bug # 555702 in
previous kernel package. That is, the ide hard drive is not
recognised and reported as device does not exist or to that
effect. No problem in 2.6.30 or earlier kernel packages.

I am unable to easily show the dmesg as mounting the SATA hard
drive or USB thumb drive from busybox will not work for me in
spite of these devices being recognised and listed in various
ways in /dev. mount protests with messages like device does not
exist or no such file .

probing IDE interface ide1...

also
ide-gd driver 1.18
is not found in dmesg as per previous kernel versions

Bug#555702: Info received (ATA drive root partition does not exist)

2009-11-28 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Comparing config-2.6.31-1-686[ for the not functioning kernel] with
config-2.6.30-2-686 [for the functioning kernel] shows that the same
modules to drive my IDE atiixp are used rather than the ATA atiixp
ones. So there is no difference here. My IDE drive device hdX
should be there rather than sdX, but it is not. Since the corresponding
libata driver for atiixp is not engaged, it is not seen by libata
either. But the sata drive is seen as per the functioning kernel. I
suspect the new 2.6.31 kernel cannot work well with the old IDE atiixp
driver.

2009/11/28 Bryan Cebuliak bryan.cebul...@gmail.com

I had a look at the
 config-2.6.31-1-686.gzhttp://merkel.debian.org/%7Ejurij/2.6.31-2/i386/config-2.6.31-1-686.gz
 from
 http://merkel.debian.org/~jurij/2.6.31-2/i386/http://merkel.debian.org/%7Ejurij/2.6.31-2/i386/
Indeed both IDE and ATA are enabled as modules.
 Is this relevant?
Seems like I am having a rather schizophrenic conversation. So be
it. The rest of the world is crazy. That is certain.

 Why is IDE not recognised?

Is CONFIG_IDE enabled as well as CONFIG_ATA? See this

Bug#555702: ATA drive root partition does not exist

2009-11-13 Thread Bryan Cebuliak
Further information re this package bug [do not tell me it is not]:
It appears that my PATA drive devices are not existent with this new
kernel package.

I boot from ATA drive
Duplicate UUID on the cloned SATA drive partition was changed.
Now I get long delay in boot and eventually a message:
Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems:
...
ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/[long UUID number] does not exist
Dropping to a shell
...

similar message after changing GRUB2 to no UUID:
...
 ALERT! /dev/hda15 does not exist
...

No joy with adding rootdelay=90 option to grub2

From the shell:
ls /dev/hda*
shows no devices of that name, whereas
ls /dev/sda*
shows the full complement

Bug#555702: [linux-image-2.6.31-1-686] wrong partition is booted with linux-image-2.6.31-1-686

2009-11-11 Thread Bryan Cebuliak

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

SATA drive partitions prefixed sda are booted incorrectly instead of PATA
drive partitions prefixed hda. The partitions were cloned and have the same
UUID. However this incorrect behaviour does not occur with currently
installed previous kernels using the same GRUB2 bootloader.
