Bug#568207: Test results with 2.6.34-rc6

2010-05-03 Thread Chuan-kai Lin
I tested 2.6.34-rc6 yesterday (with xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.11.0-1
and xserver-xorg-core 2:1.7.6.901-3), and the new kernel showed some
improvement. Even with an external monitor attached to my ThinkPad X30
laptop, the X server starts correctly and provides a stable graphics
display on the internel LCD screen. In other words, with 2.6.34-rc6, I
no longer need to unplug the external monitor before starting X to avoid
the blank screen problem.

Unfortunately, some problems remain:

 * Extensive rendering artifacts at 24bpp (16bpp is fine).

 * Flashing and jumping (horizontally) images on the external monitor.
It looks like the kernel driver failed to properly configure the VGA
output DAC. Switching the external monitor off-and-on with xrandr
has no effect on the problem (i.e., it does not help).

For now I am staying with 2.6.34-rc5.

I think the problem I am experiencing is the same as (or is very closely
related to) Linux kernel bug #15070.

Bug 15070 - kernel mode switching broken on i830

Bug#568207: Bug still exists in latest versions

2010-04-22 Thread Chuan-kai Lin
This is a quick report: I just upgraded to xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.11.0-1 and Linux kernel 2.6.34-rc5 on my ThinkPad X30 laptop (830MG
graphics adapter). X works fine if there is no external monitor
attached to the laptop when I start the X server. If there is an
external monitor attached to the laptop when I start the X server, X
produces a blank black screen on both the laptop and the external
monitors, and there are no kernel error messages:

kernel: i915 :00:02.0: setting latency timer to 64
kernel: [drm] set up 15M of stolen space
kernel: [drm] initialized overlay support
kernel: fb: conflicting fb hw usage inteldrmfb vs VESA VGA - removing generic
driver
kernel: fb1: inteldrmfb frame buffer device
kernel: registered panic notifier
kernel: [drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20080730 for :00:02.0 on minor 0

The system still responds to SysRq keys after the X malfunction.

Note that xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.11.0 *requires* kernel modesetting,
so users who are still on 830MG may want to stick to 2:2.9.1-3 (which
does not require KMS) until the problem is resolved.
