Bug#808479: linux-image-4.3.0-0.bpo.1-amd64: Confirmation of this bug; bug due to climbing memory usage

2016-01-24 Thread oldtechaa
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.3.3-7~bpo8+1
Followup-For: Bug #808479

Dear Maintainer,

I can also confirm this bug on an Inspiron 530 w/ 2GB RAM. On this computer, it
takes about 15hrs. to crash the computer. The memory usage climbs up to that
point, not due to any usage on the part of applications. The kernel keeps
claiming more and more memory until the OOM killer is invoked and kills all
applications. The applications meanwhile remain constant in memory usage. I
have kern.log backups I could attach, but all they show is the OOM killer's
invocation.

The issue is also clearly in the kernel, because just like the original
reporter, a revert (to 3.16) fixed the problem. I will try to see what some of
the possible culprits in the changelog for the kernel are. In the meantime, we
can use either 3.16 or 4.2.

This bug might also be good to have marked important, as it makes the
kernel nearly unusable in some cases, and it is a fairly big bug. I also
would say it is probably upstream, although that can't be said for certain
at this point, I don't think.

Bug#812151: linux-image-4.3.0-1-amd64: USB freeze issue on AMD SBx00 chipsets is not fully resolved

2016-01-20 Thread oldtechaa
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.3.3-5
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

We have tried several different kernels on this Dell Optiplex 320. The USB
chipset is an AMD SB600, which was previously known by developers to have
freeze issues when multiple devices were plugged in. We are using a KWorld
UB435-Q TV tuner, a Ralink wireless adapter, and a Creative wireless keyboard
mouse combo. Logs on the matter have been limited, not displaying anything
regarding this problem.

The patch that was applied to help in multiple device situations does not seem
to have fully resolved the issue, as when using the TV Tuner, it fails to
acquire all of the video data. When the Ralink adapter is unplugged, the video
signal from the tuner gets better, but still has green artifacts throughout.
Unfortunately, we cannot unplug the keyboard mouse combination as the
motherboard has no PS/2 ports to use with a non-USB keyboard. Testing with the
keyboard/mouse removed results in no green spots in the video data, but still
freezes occasionally during recording. This could be due to the USB 1.1
controllers which appear as connected USB devices. The problem also affects the
usage of the keyboard and mouse, causing loss of some characters and jumps on
the mouse.

The reason this is marked as important is because it makes Linux unusable for
our purposes on this computer. Fortunately, we have other computers to use
instead. This computer will likely be taken down soon and replaced with one of
those, so testing and logging time may be limited.

Bug#810826: linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64: Black screen with nouveau on GeForce Go 6100

2016-01-12 Thread oldtechaa
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

Using the nouveau kernel driver always results in a black screen upon
framebuffer handover approx. 15 seconds into boot. The hardware is a GeForce Go
6100 with an MCP61 southbridge on a Gateway MT3419 laptop. The backlight
continues to brighten and dim as the X server starts, but nothing is displayed
on screen after nouveau is initialized. The only workarounds are to use vesa
with nomodeset or to use the NVidia proprietary driver. To get a working
display, nomodeset must be added to the kernel command line. This seems to be a
known problem, but has never been fixed. All distros and all kernels show the
same behavior. (I believe OpenSuSE Leap worked correctly one time, but I don't
have it available to test again.)

I have detailed dmesg logs that can be attached, and I will mark in the logs
the last thing I see before the screen goes black.

Obviously, this is a fairly serious bug, since the use of nouveau is made
impossible on certain chipsets. Also, it is obviously upstream, since it
happens in all distros.
