I didn't say the timeout was ignored; I said the time limit was
increased. If a driver sets a time limit for some hardware operation
which is shorter than the hardware may require to complete it
successfully, increasing the time limit may well be the correct fix.

OK; sorry; cynicism was dominating reason.

The delay I see is about 12 s. The initialization is electronic
switching with possibly a few disk writes? I'd expect that to
occur in less than 1 s.

Regards, ... Peter E.

Does the IEEE 1394 port work properly after this or not?

It does not. The offending 1394 appears to be on an
Adaptec PCI card. If the camera is connected there,
Coriander always notifies that no camera is found.

Luckily there is another 1394 socket on the front panel.
With the camera connected there, Coriander immediately
gives an image. So, this complaint comes from one
particular chip.

If not, can you test Linux 3.2 from testing, unstable
 or squeeze-backports?

I have a vow never to monkey with unstable again but
the squeeze backport kernel might be tolerable.

The time limit for this has been increased in later versions of
the driver, and it may be that this would fix the problem.

Rather than an adjustment to allow the timeout to pass,
wouldn't a genuine repair of the driver be desirable?

Regards,... Peter E.

Bug#614326: asix USB Ethernet

2011-05-30 Thread peasthope
By the way, when the Linksys USB200M failed here it was replaced
with a Belkin F5D5050. That has worked since with no overt problem.
It uses the pegasus driver. The problem is in the asix driver and
possibly involving udev, isn't it?

installing any Windows driver that came with it)?

Ben, thanks for the astute reply.

Yes, with the auxiliary power adapter connected, the
Belkin Cardbus-USB adapter works with the USB-Ethernet
adapter, the mouse and the Altec-Lansing headset.
The headset uses a C-Media USB adapter. My mistake
was to assume that low power devices don't require
the auxiliary power.

Also USB on the OrangeCombo USB 2.0/FireWire for
Notebooks works just as well. I didn't test Firewire
on that.

Is there any possibility for the software to detect
the inadequate power supply and give a more indicative
report?

Thanks, ... Peter E.

Bug#423082: Problem with Belkin USB 2.0 Notebook Card in Toshiba 4000CDS.

2010-01-15 Thread peasthope
Folk,

  Muehlenhoff j...@inutil.org wrote,
Please test the current 2.6.32 from unstable ...

At 2010-01-12 update of the Toshiba 4000CDS
to Squeeze with kernel 2.6.32 was completed
and the Cardbus USB adapter was tested.

The repeating error message mentioned at
2009-08-12 is gone. Yet there is now an
error message when the Belkin FD5050
USB-Ethernet adapter is plugged in and
an another message when the USB mouse is
added. If the mouse is plugged while the
second USB socket is vacant, there is no
error message and the mouse works OK, in
my brief observation. X logs a few error
messages; one mentioning the IOCTL for
the mouse.

The earlier error screen is now visible here.
http://members.shaw.ca/peasthope/BelkinCardbusUSB.jpg

The current screen is here.

My poorly qualified conclusion is that at
least one problem remains in a PCMCIA driver,
in a USB driver or in the Pegasus driver;
a problem might also exist in udev.

Moritz, you are better qualified than I am
to report upstream. If you prefer that I
issue the report, just let me know.

Folk,

The problem with this Belkin adapter is now
worse than when originally reported. At startup
in Squeeze, error messages repeat for a few
minutes at least. Visible here.
