Bug#463833: SantaRosa PATA don't managed by ata_piix

2008-05-27 Thread Blips
#463833 was set to important about four months ago. Why don't you set it normal
before?
I think I wrote a very clear email, but I didn't receive any answer and/or
request for more detail and/or tests. [*]
Have I to continue to support and spread Debian or I have to say everything
that debian-developers doesn't reply to emails?
That is a *real* problem. Not a minor problem. Currently with Debian it's
impossible to write a DVD using a SantaRosa laptop. In practice, a large part
the laptop sold in the last year are not supported in Debian, which would be
the *universal* operating system.
At least and email saying Yes, understood, but we have decided... for that
reason... please read... would be very appreciated.

[*] In Ubuntu ata_piix works perfectly and there isn't any problem with
suspend2ram.

This bug makes DVD Writer unusable in SantaRosa-based laptop.
It should be fixed soon, before the release of Lenny.

It still does not make it unusable for everyone, which is the meaning of
grave. Please reread the documentation about the bts before playing
with it.

Yes, it is not unusable for everyone, but in my humble opinion it should be
considered a release blocker in any case.
It not makes sense to release Lenny with this bug, because any person who owns
a recent laptop would be obliged to working with kernel code, not a simple
thing.
Did you imagine a slightly-power user (not a complete newby) to remove a kernel
patch? The temptation to switch to Ubuntu or, worse, to Windows will became
more and more higher.

Hash: SHA1

Package: linux-image-2.6.24-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.24-2
Severity: important

As in the 2.6.23 debian's kernels, the PATA controller in the SantaRosa
chipset (8086:2850) is non managed by the ata_piix kernel driver.

On the Lenovo Thinkpad R61 (but I know for sure there are other Notebook
suffering of the same problem), the DVD-Writer cannot work with the old piix
modules. If I load the piix module the dvd drive is recognized but it's
unusable. The kernel log gets filled with hda: set_drive_speed_status:
status=0x51 errors.

It would be better if the user has the option to choose the module to load,
as with the vanilla kernel.

Please drop the drivers-ata-ata_piix-postpone-pata.patch.bz2 patch from the
Debian Kernel; it's anachronistic.
