Bug#698821: linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64: ARECA driver arcmsr is out of date - please update

2015-02-09 Thread Teodor Milkov

FTR,

It seems newest areca driver is finally merged into vanilla kernel 3.18:
http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/log/drivers/scsi/arcmsr/arcmsr_hba.c?id=b2776bf7149bddd1f4161f14f79520f17fc1d71d

Unfortunately, neither Wheezy nor Jessie have support for 1214 and
there's even regression for 1882 in some configurations (doesn't work on
supermicro X10 mobo's).

Please, consider backporting areca updates from 3.18/3.19 to Jessie
kernel (3.16).

Bug#698821: linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64: ARECA driver arcmsr is out of date - please update

2013-12-03 Thread Alessandro Polverini
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.2.51-1
Followup-For: Bug #698821

I would like to ping this bug: debian is not installable on latest Areca
controllers like ARC-12x4, and they are out since many months now.

The latest driver is available from this page:
http://www.areca.com.tw/support/main.htm
and the latest version at the time of this writing is this one:
http://www.areca.us/support/s_linux/driver/arcmsr-1.30.0X.16-131015.zip

By compiling it by hand it works fine, but this does not solve the problem of
unattended kernel updates and new installations.

 Dear Maintainer,

 Please see https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=52961

The ARECA arcmsr driver has not (as far as I can tell) been updated
since version 1.20.00.15 02/27/2008; the current version, available from:

 http://www.areca.com.tw/support/s_linux/linux.htm

is 1.20.0X.15-111012 2011/10/12. Current ARECA hardware is unsupported
 by the older driver.

That's not how this works. Someone, ideally one of ARECA's developers,
needs to submit a logically structured series of patches to the driver
in mainline Linux. Those could can then be backported into Debian's
Linux kernel package. Neither the Debian kernel team nor the Linux
maintainers will simply 'update' to an out-of-tree version.

Ben.
