Bug#603944: retry mounting of root
Package: initramfs-tools Version: 0.98 When using multipath, it is possible that mountroot() will race with udev's renaming of /dev/disk/by-uuid/{rootfs-uuid} from /dev/sd?? to /dev/mapper/something. After multipath has grabbed the /dev/sd?? and until udev completes the rename, mounting /dev/disk/by-uuid/{rootfs-uuid} will fail with -EBUSY. Here is a patch I've been using successfully for awhile. Colin Watson has suggested that: A poll/retry loop is generally a suboptimal way to do this kind of thing; what we really want is to wait for udev to tell us that it has finished with the event that triggered renaming of the device. which does seem cleaner. thanks, -serge diff -Nru initramfs-tools-0.98ubuntu2/debian/changelog initramfs-tools-0.98ubuntu3/debian/changelog --- initramfs-tools-0.98ubuntu2/debian/changelog2010-08-20 03:48:58.0 -0500 +++ initramfs-tools-0.98ubuntu3/debian/changelog2010-08-24 22:31:31.0 -0500 @@ -1,3 +1,14 @@ +initramfs-tools (0.98ubuntu3) maverick; urgency=low + + * Add retries to mountroot(). These patches are well maintained, and touch areas of the kernel that do not change much (making them very easy to merge). Why leave non-PAE x86 users out in the code when so many other distros use some form of this patchset? I've worked to make sure they only touch CONFIG_X86_32, so they're extremely minimal. Currently we recommend PAE for bigger boxes but do not default to it. Action item by bwh and waldi to default Debian Installer to it and deprecate non PAE 686. This sounds great, regardless. Upstream status of the other patch is unknown, maks will consult Kees. In my mind, they[1] are a single patch -- the 32-bit mmap randomization is better named ASCII Armor ASLR, which doesn't have much value, IMO. The entropy is extremely low compared to upstream ASLR, but it would be actually 0 if left out in the nx-emu case. As such, it is only enabled on systems that are using nx-emu. I intend to try to get it upstreamed, but it's pretty far down on my TODO list[1]. Bug#603957: linux-2.6: consider raising CONFIG_HZ to 1000
Package: linux-2.6 Version: 2.6.32-27 Severity: wishlist Hi, I think I mentioned this a while back on irc, but filing here for reference. clock_gettime(CLOCK_MONOTONIC) is expensive, so people want to use CLOCK_MONOTONIC_COARSE instead. See e.g. http://lists.x.org/pipermail/xorg-devel/2010-August/012483.html However X would like millisecond granularity, which means HZ=1000 instead of the current 250, in order to be able to use the coarse timer. This means that security vulnerabilities in such protocol modules may be exploitable by local users even on a system where there is no need for the protocol. Protocol modules are requested via module aliases generated from the protocol-family, protocol and type numbers passed to socket(). Administrators can of course blacklist the modules or disable their aliases, but there is an ever-growing list of protocols. There has been some discussion upstream of providing a means to disable or restrict this auto-loading altogether, but this is currently unresolved. [...] It looks like DECnet is not in great shape w.r.t security and is not at all widely used. You appear to be maintaining both kernel (upstream) and userland (in Debian). What do you think of moving the module alias into dnet-common, so systems without that package are not vulnerable to security flaws in the decnet module? Re: Security: auto-loading protocol modules
Finally, x25 (*not* ax25) appears to have no applications in Debian. Google Code Search found only 4 hits for AF_X25 or PF_X25 outside of the kernel, header files or language bindings: ean - X.400 message handling software http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#C_8T3NZHV74/pub/Apps/ean.tar.Z|yKhWeFXFTsk/ Supports BSD and SunOS 4.x. isode - ISO Development Environment http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#Zt3wT8KZVSw/pub/unix/osi/isode-6.8.tar.Z|QdgFXEHCFMY/isode-interim/ Supports BSD and SVR2/3. x25d - replacements for the SUN supplied x29 and ybts.inetd http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#yhcp39oOAbE/Comm/x25d.tar.gz|JTz9HiI-i1Q/ Supports SunOS with SunLink. c-kermit - remote terminal and file transfer program http://www.google.com/codesearch/p?hl=en#xjmb5K7Fhaw/kermit/ftp/archives/cku211.tar.Z|IaOxNeZiGO8/ [The above page is very slow in Iceweasel, so try downloading http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/ftp/archives/cku211.tar.Z ] X.25 code only supports SunOS with SunLink. If I've counted correctly, there are 0 applications for Linux X.25.
