TrueCrypt License 2.5

Hello,

I would like to know if TrueCrypt 6 would be accepted for non-free.

I know there have already been 2 threads about the TrueCrypt License:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2006/06/msg00294.html
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2008/01/msg00122.html

The actual TrueCrypt Licensen Version 2.5 is available at
http://www.truecrypt.org/legal/license which I have pasted for possible
reference.

I'm sure that TrueCrypt would not be accepted for Debian (main), but is
it alright for non-free?

If not, would an installer (e.g. 'truecrypt-package' like
'googleearth-package') be accepted for contrib?

Please don't suggest to hint the TrueCrypt guys towards relicensing,
that won't help me (although that would be the best).

Kind regards,

Okay,
what about this plan:

* strip the revoco part and put the rest of btnx into main
* create a second package - btnx-nonfree - including the revoco code -
and put it into non-free
* put conflicts/breaks against each other into the control files, so
only one of both can be installed at the same time

This way all Debian users could benefit from btnx.
Users who want to use the revoco-feature have to use the package from
non-free. In my opinion this is bearable.

But one question remains, although in the nonfree-section:
How to mention/explain the monkey story in debian/copyright?

Philipp

source code written by monkey

2008-08-10 Thread Philipp Hübner

Hello,

I've packaged the program btnx [0], but my prospecitve sponsor
encountered a license problem:
in btnx's source there is one file which was not written by btnx's
upstream itself (revoco.c).

Debian policy:
Note that under international copyright law (this applies in the United
States, too), no distribution or modification of a work is allowed
without an explicit notice saying so.

The actual author of this file (Edgar Toernig) refused to put any
copyrights / licenses on it and claims that his monkey has written it,
because international copyright law does not apply to animals' works.
This way he wants to make is code completely free.

In revoco.c he states:
 * Written November 2006 by E. Toernig's bonobo - no copyrights.
 * Contact: Edgar Toernig [EMAIL PROTECTED]

In btnx.c upstream states:
/**
 * File revoco.c has no copyrights (it was written by an animal), and is
 * not bound by the GNU GPL.
 * However, it is still distributed and modified by the blessing of its
 * original author. See revoco.c for contact info of the author.
**/

My questions now: how shall I proceed?
Edgar Toernig stays with his statement, I already asked him.

Kind regards,
Philipp Huebner

I forget which package, but there is software in Debian (main,

a thread about this on debian-legal, please search the archives and
 read it.

I searched the archives, but couldn't find anything.

Some ideas for keywords or thread names I could use?

Hello Evgeni,
thank you for the information.

I tried to ask Edgar too, and once also uploaded revoco to NEW.
Joerg has REJECTED it, with the following statement:
[...]
I gave up revoco then, if you have time, you can try larting Edgar, but
 I doubt that will help.
So do I.

Does this mean btnx has to go into non-free and btnx-config into contrib?
