A typical structure of a Lua package with a C library is the following: The C library with a symlink (to allow someone to link a program in C to it): /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0 /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1 -> liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0 The symlink which lets Lua find the library (by require "ssl") /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lua/5.1/ssl.so -> ../../liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0 Since it points to a higher location in the file system, lintian shows a warning. Though, the link never goes outside /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu, so I would say that this warning is spurious. Can it be fixed in Lintian? I can think of another way of fixing it by reverting the linkage (make /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lua/5.3/ssl.so a real file and point the symlink /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0 to it), but I'm not sure it's worth the effort. lintian 2.83.0 released
Hi, The Lintian maintainers are pleased to announce the release of Lintian version 2.83.0. Lintian dissects Debian packages and reports bugs and policy violations. It contains automated checks for many aspects of Debian policy as well as some checks for common errors. This version includes the following changes: [ Felix Lechner ] * Add a new standalone HTML output mode. * Warn about embedded javascript files provided by sphinx. (Closes: #964013) * Exempt links that stay inside /usr/lib from breakout-link. (Closes: #964073) * Rename second mention of tag manpage-in-wrong-directory. (Closes: #964282) * Extend spell check to all parts of debhelper rule targets. (Closes: #963765) * Only check the DEP-3 header for legacy encodings in debian/patches. (Closes: #964281) * Restrict top folder for breakout-link to architecture in /usr/lib and permit links freely within. (Closes: #964073) * Use the new path to test recipes in autopkgtest. (Closes: #964405) * Drop a test no longer building due to new restraints on version strings. (See: #953554) * Exempt Lintian's own test suite from scans in source files and remove programmatic conditionals in checks. * Replace references to 'manpages' with 'manual pages' in tag descriptions. . [ Chris Lamb ] * Correct a reference to "override_dh_" in the long description of the excessive-debhelper-overrides tag. . [ Lev Lamberov ] * Update Debian Emacsen team wiki page link. . [ Paul Wise ] * Add several spelling corrections. Bug#964381: lintian: Detecting bogus email address
Hi Hugh, On Mon, Jul 6, 2020 at 6:24 AM Hugh McMaster wrote: > > Should I ignore lintian, override the tag or change the problem email > addresses > to the upstream author's actual email address (also found all over the > changelog)? Adam confirmed via private email that changing the address is okay. An internal address appeared by mistake. Alternatively, you could wait until a new version of Data::Validate::Domain is uploaded. At that point, the TLD validation will probably be turned off (although it worked well in your case). The use of that feature is worth a discussion somewhere. Please feel free to close this bug report. Kind regards Felix Lechner

This worked for years. The restriction applies only to source packages and not to installation packages. Is it such a burden to create the file in d/rules, or elsewhere? It should be one line, at most. The logic is a little bit similar to device nodes, or other special files. Kind regards Felix Lechner
