ISTR there is already a tag flagging possibly wrong rules target that
are likely a typo of a dh override. Please also flag these.

Package: lintian
Version: 2.82.0
Severity: normal

Because lintian emitted the national-encoding tag for a bunch of
upstream files, I added a patch which fixes this.

Now lintian complains about that patch:

W: wml source: national-encoding
debian/patches/change-national-encoding-to-utf-8.patch

IMHO files under debian/patches should be either completely excluded
from this tag or (less trivial) only the DEP3 headers in these files
should be checked for containing national encoding.

Dear Maintainer,

running lintian on developers-reference 11.0.12 from bullseye results in two
warnings:

W: developers-reference-ru: embedded-javascript-library
usr/share/developers-reference/ru/_static/jquery.js please use libjs-jquery
W: developers-reference-ru: embedded-javascript-library
usr/share/developers-reference/ru/_static/underscore.js please use
libjs-underscore

I fixed those two in 11.0.13 in sid, but there are still embedded javascript
libraries included, which lintian does not detect:

$ dpkg -L developers-reference|grep js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/doctools.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/documentation_options.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/language_data.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/searchtools.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/switchers.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/searchindex.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/jquery.js
/usr/share/developers-reference/_static/underscore.js

Out of these, three of them come from Sphinx:
- doctools.js
- language_data.js
- searchtools.js

Please make lintian complain about embedding those. It seems the problem could
be quite widespread:

$ for i in doctools.js language_data.js searchtools.js ; do apt-file search
"_static/$i" | wc -l ; done

Dear maintainer(s),

With a recent upload of lintian the autopkgtest of lintian fails in
testing when that autopkgtest is run with the binary packages of lintian
from unstable. It passes when run with only packages from testing. In
tabular form:

   passfail

all others from testingfrom testing

I copied some of the output at the bottom of this report.

Currently this regression is blocking the migration to testing [1]. Can
you please investigate the situation and fix it?

Package: lintian
Version: 2.82.0
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Recently, lintian started to emit the breakout-link warning for a bunch of Lua
related packages. A typical structure of a Lua package with a C library is the
following:

The C library with a symlink (to allow someone to link a program in C to it):

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1 -> liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0

The symlink which lets Lua find the library (by require "ssl")

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lua/5.1/ssl.so -> ../../liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0

Since it points to a higher location in the file system, lintian shows a
warning. Though, the link never goes outside /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu,
so I would say that this warning is spurious.

Can it be fixed in Lintian?

I can think of another way of fixing it by reverting the linkage (make
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/lua/5.3/ssl.so a real file and point the symlink
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/liblua5.1-sec.so.1.0.0 to it), but I'm not sure
it's worth the effort.

Cheers!

  * Drop a test no longer building due to new restraints on version
strings. (See: #953554)

Bug#964381: lintian: Detecting bogus email address

Adam confirmed via private email that changing the address is okay. An
internal address appeared by mistake.

Alternatively, you could wait until a new version of
Data::Validate::Domain is uploaded. At that point, the TLD validation
will probably be turned off (although it worked well in your case).
The use of that feature is worth a discussion somewhere.

Please feel free to close this bug report.

Kind regards

Holger, as I mentioned some days ago, I consider this case a
regression which I was planning on fixing. This fix was already
included earlier today in the dpkg 1.20.4 upload. :)

The restriction applies only to source packages and not to
installation packages. Is it such a burden to create the file in
d/rules, or elsewhere? It should be one line, at most.

The logic is a little bit similar to device nodes, or other special files.

Kind regards

sigh. so IMNSHO now lintian *and* dpkg are buggy. Or point me to policy
which prohibits files pointing to /dev/null. This worked for years.

(I haven't cloned the dpkg bug yet, as I believed Guillem would upload a
