Re: RFS: audtty

2007-08-15 Thread Chris Taylor
The package does not build for me. It fails with: Unmet build
 dependencies: automake. I have automake1.4 and automake1.7
specifically installed. Once I installed the virtual automake (which
provides automake 1.10), it then built o.k. You may want to specify
automake1.10 specifically as a Builds-Depends. You could stick with
automake, but what happens when the virtual package automake
provides automake1.11 in the future. Will your package break?

The changelog shows 2 entries - an initial release and then an
update. Since this is the first release, why not just one entry?
Also, you have two bugs open for audtty (one RFP and one ITP). You
should have retitled the RFP to an ITP and taken it over instead of
the two separate bugs you now have. You may want to merge them now
and then close just one bug in your changelog. Any way you do it,
just make sure both bugs get closed once the package is uploaded.

Is this a spelling mistake in debian/rules:

 DEB_MAKE_CHEACK_TARGET =
Does it do anything? And why the commented out line:

I fixed the spelling error, and cleaned up the rules file a bit. This rule
tells CDBS that the makefile does not contain a check target, making sure
that it does not attempt to call it.

I cleaned up the build-depends in debian/control, because the automake
dependency was not needed as the only autotool used is autoconf.

Drop README.Debian since it is empty.

Remove the comments and cruft from debian/watch. You only need 2
 lines in that file.

You need to clean up the debian/copyright file. See the package
 csstidy for an example.

I removed the unneeded README.Debian, and cleaned up the debian/watch
file. I also redid the debian/copyright file, as well as the changelog.
The ITP bug was also closed, i changed it so that in the changelog the
package closes the RFP.

I uploaded the fixed packages to mentors.debian.net

Thanks for taking a look at it.

unable to build gdb from source

2007-08-15 Thread Kamaraju S Kusumanchi
Can some one tell me what I am doing wrong here? I am unable to build gdb
from source on a machine running sid. I did

$apt-get source gdb
$cd gdb-6.6.dfsg/
$ dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc -rfakeroot

The build log is attached in this email. What puzzles me is that, according
to
http://buildd.debian.org/fetch.cgi?pkg=gdbver=6.6.dfsg-1arch=i386stamp=1170205364file=log
it built just fine. However it does not build on my machine. This machine
does not have pbuilder installed so can't check if things improve when I
build with it. Any ideas on why this is happening? Should I file a bug?

thanks

Can some one tell me what I am doing wrong here? I am unable to build gdb

 $apt-get source gdb
 $cd gdb-6.6.dfsg/

From your build log:

  rmdir /home/raju/downloaded packages source/gdb-6.6.dfsg/objdir
rmdir: /home/raju/downloaded: No such file or directory
rmdir: packages: No such file or directory
rmdir: source/gdb-6.6.dfsg/objdir: No such file or directory

Your problem is a combination of unquoted strings and spaces in
file/directory names; specifically, downloaded packages source. Renaming
that directory so that its name contains no spaces (actually, no characters
which have special meaning to the shell) will be enough to work around the
problem.

You're apparently trying to build in downloaded packages source/.
It contains a space which the make build system didn't handle. IMHO
it's a bug, but I suspect many package have similar problems. I
supose somebody wants to rebuild the archive and find out?

Completely agree. My point was that, when I've *needed* ANSI color
and similar capabilities in an application where I didn't want to
(or couldn't) use curses, I've usually coded the necessary
definitions into whatever custom Python module I wrote to do display
handling, or set up macros in a C header, and it's not exactly been
a burdensome amount of code to throw together from scratch.

That's not to say that I wouldn't be thrilled if Python upstream
started to carry these definitions as part of its core modules (like
they do with, say, Telnet IAC sequences). Closest I can find is
definitions like curses.ascii.ESC, curses.COLOR_RED and
curses.A_NORMAL... I could hack those (wrapped with chr() or str()
calls where appropriate) into my colorize functions in place of some
of my constants, but that would be even uglier in my opinion.

Anyway, time for me to stop derailing the discussion (pun intended).

RFS: xawtv (updated package)

2007-08-15 Thread Krzysztof Burghardt
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 3.95.dfsg.1-5
of my package xawtv.

It builds these binary packages:
alevtd - http daemon for videotext pages
fbtv - linux console (fbcon) TV application
pia- movie player
radio - ncurses-based radio application
scantv - scan TV channels for stations
streamer - capture tool (images / movies)
ttv- tty TV application
v4l-conf - tool to configure video4linux drivers
webcam - capture and upload images
xawtv - X11 TV application
xawtv-plugin-qt - quicktime plugin for xawtv and motv
xawtv-plugins - plugins for xawtv and motv
xawtv-tools - Miscellaneous tools distributed with xawtv

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 55016, 231557, 394001, 414261,
436513, 436953, 437843

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/x/xawtv
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable
main contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/x/xawtv/xawtv_3.95.dfsg.1-5.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards,

I'm afraid the very concept of termcap/terminfo is thoroughly broken.
It makes the following assumptions:

* all TERM strings are known to all machines. Mere ssh will break
otherwise. And even after all these years, Solaris still doesn't
know what TERM=linux means (the last time I checked it didn't, at
  least).

* TERM strings are unique. Because of the above, no one who makes a
terminal emulator will use a real string as it would make his
terminal useless. Thus, anything popular uses either:
+ xterm:
- xterms of all Unices -- no matter what differences between
them are, often interpreting vt100+ codes in creative ways
(compared to how I would read the docs),
- libvt based stuff (totally incompatible with xterms),
- konsole and derivatives (totally incompatible with the rest
  _and_ buggy)
- PuTTY (one of the best nowadays, used to be terrible)
+ rxvt:
- aterm, wterm, etc. None of them sync bugfixes with the
  others.
+ linux:
- real Linux text console.
+ vt100:
- physical terminals, even if they're rather vt19578394.
+ screen:
- reinterprets everything in its own dialect, usually for
  good results, sometimes for bad.

In other words, TERM is totally useless. How is it supposed to
tell me that I have to write spaces to every position instead of
usual means of clearing the screen if bgcolor isn't transparent
(older putties) -- and even if it could, neither termcap nor terminfo
have means to convey this info. Or, do I need to restore the \e[???m
attrs after moving the cursor (libvt in some cases)? Or, what are
the effects of \n on the line right to the cursor? Or, how to be
told if arrow keys pressed are Kpad ones or the new-style gray
ones?

From my own experience, the only way to get decent portability is,
ironically, hard-coding a certain subset of vt100ish codes. Querying
termcap/terminfo tends to lose rather fast in comparison.

So there's no point in using tstuff unless one _likes_ the nasty
comments that people make when they try to either use the program or
read the code ;-)

Replacing --exec with --startas seems to fix the issue.
I understand that --exec mail be wrong because the daemon is written in
perl, so the processus name wouldn't be what's passed to exec.
However --startas description is quite obvious to me and I don't
understand what it does exactly.

system... But I gather it isn't necessarily a bug? (Don't recall
anyhting in policy about it, but then I'm still learning that...)

I ask because there is
another ifstat file in Debian; it's from the ifcico package
gets installed in a different directory. There is also an issue
with the man page; I was thinking of doing a man page for the
ifcico ifstat program (there doesn't seem to be one) but the other
ifstat does install one...

The ifstat package provides /usr/bin/ifstat and the ifcico package
provides /usr/lib/ifmail/ifstat so I wouldn't expect a conflict
there

True; except that /usr/bin is more likely to be in the $PATH
than /usr/lib/ifmail...(Unless a particular user account is used
specifically for the ifcico similar programs, in which case the
$PATH could be adjusted for that ...)

(as long as anything needing the executable from ifcico has
that path hard-coded or pre-empting /usr/bin as necessary).

When I use programs in scripts, I usually include the path for
whatever executables I'm using. Don't normally do that when I use a
program from the command line...

The
manpage for the former is in section 1 and the manpage for the
latter would go in section 8 if consistent with the manpages for the
other stuff in /usr/lib/ifmail, so again no conflict (though users
with both installed will need to specify 'man 8 ifstat' to see the
one from ifcico).

Ah, yes; I overlooked that aspect of it; so I'll likely go
ahead write up a man page for it (ifstat in ifcico package).

Why do you still have this line in debian/changelog?

  * Updated package to upstream version 0.1.5a

Since this is initial release, it is not an updated package.

In debian/copyright:

Upstream Author: should be plural since there are 3

In virtually every upstream file there is the copyright line:

2003-2005 Knut Auvor Grythe

Why did you put:

2003-2004 Knut Auvor Grythe

in debian/copyright? Note 2004 vs 2005.

I'm a bit picky, but I like to see all unnecessary whitespace and
extra double space lines removed from all files. Most of your
