Done.

I've currently no sid system with enough build-depends available to
test, but your clean target really looks like not cleaning enough.
Please try to run dpkg-buildpackage -S after a dpkg-buildpackage and
look at the .diff.gz, I'd be suprised if there weren't a myriad of
additional files in there (at least I see nothing removing Makefile
or Makefile.in and stuff like that).

It should be OK now. I have replaced Makefile.config with Makefile in the
clean target.

Your debian/copyright states it is LGPLv3 but does not point to the
copy of the license in /usr/share/common-licenses/LGPL-3.

It's fixed now.

You do not list the copyright holders of intl/ (17692 lines in .c files
is not little), ide/font_outline/ArevCopyright.txt lists a copyright
holder not found in there, and perhaps other files, too...

I have added ~50 lines to the debian/copyright file, most of them are
Copyright (C) 1984 ... 2007, Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Also having the package under LGPL 3 and the debianisation under GPL 2
looks strange to problematic to me...

Hmm, I didn't know that. Anyway, it's now under LGPL-3 as well.

Thanks for having a look at it.

Nice work, uploaded!

Just some notes, not too big to stop the upload, but worth for a fix
in a new release:

* description: maybe describe really briefly what ARP and ICMP are
(just to give a clue to curious users what it's all about), eventually
grab some phrases from upstream webpage

* orig tarball: instruct upstream to remove .gitignore in dist target?

* README.Debian: wrap at 80 column, indent the commands (cp...) to be clearer

* rules:

ifeq (,$(findstring nostrip,$(DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS)))
INSTALL_FLAGS += -s
endif

  - am I wrong, or this add -s to install (that will strip debug
symbols co) when DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS contains nostrip? if so, then
it's the opposite of what you want :) [it might be un-used, hence
remove it]

  - you're not doing any business in configure, thus remove it (And
all its hanging children)

  - clean, you can merge rm -f ... with dh_clean (they do the same thing)

* did you forward patches upstream? hope so, if not then please do it now

Keep work this way! And thanks for your contribution to Debian.

Cheers,
Sandro

Well, there's nothing legal about RFS, only that it's usually done
once you feel your package is ready for upload, and it doesn't apply
here (it seems).

Of course, if you have inserted a url to .dsc, you would have received
a first check already :)

As a general rule, don't ask to ask, just ask :) For a faster (not
always) reply, you can join #debian-mentors IRC channel on OFTC
network.

Kindly,

IIRC that's where a RFC is for? But I have the impression that you could
just file a RFS and say that it is your first package. There are
friendly people over here. RFSs are usually iterative processes.

man-to-man discussion can easily be done on IRC #debian-mentors at
irc.debian.org. Be sure to upload your package somewhere before,
preferably at mentors.debian.net (you could mark that No, I don't need
a sponsor).

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for taking the time to look at quickplay.

That depends on what your definition of what mature is? If you mean
mature as in will the software do what it's suppose to do then yes.
If you mean mature as in time then probable not.

Actually upstream was not using versioning until I requested that he do
so. Hence the low version number, I thought 0.1 would be a good place
to start.

IMHO any package that introduces new features would be considered a
work in progress. I would consider Debian itself a work in progress
in that it changes and evolves on a daily basis which is a good thing.
With that said after talking extensively with upstream he does have
plans for additional features and of course to squash any bugs that may
arise. So my interpretation of this is that quickplay will be actively
developed and not become static cruft laying around the archives.

Thank you once again for looking at quickplay

Charlie

debian-repository. You can find it here:
 http://mentors.debian.net/cgi-bin/sponsor-pkglist?action=details;package=jondo
. Any feedback about this package are welcome!

Welcome to Debian packaging. The first step in getting a package into
Debian is to file an ITP against the pseudo-package WNPP that details
what you are interested in packaging. This is forwarded to
debian-devel and allows experienced developers to comment on possible
licensing issues, etc. This is all handled through reportbug. You
will then close this bug in your changelog. See
http://newpeople.debian.org/~mpalmer/debian-mentors_FAQ.html for a
quick synopsis of the process.

As far as your package goes, please make sure that it is lintian
clean. lintian currently reports a number of problems with your
package:

W: jondo source: out-of-date-standards-version 3.7.3 (current is 3.8.0)
W: jondo source: maintainer-not-full-name Rorschach
W: jondo: readme-debian-contains-debmake-template
W: jondo: executable-not-elf-or-script ./usr/share/pixmaps/jondo.xpm
W: jondo: executable-not-elf-or-script ./usr/share/java/JAP.jar
W: jondo: copyright-lists-upstream-authors-with-dh_make-boilerplate
W: jondo: description-synopsis-might-not-be-phrased-properly
W: jondo: extended-description-line-too-long
W: jondo: extended-description-line-too-long
W: jondo: extended-description-line-too-long
W: jondo: extended-description-line-too-long
W: jondo: extended-description-line-too-long
W: jondo: new-package-should-close-itp-bug
W: jondo: maintainer-not-full-name Rorschach

Use lintian -iI to show information tips and get more verbose
information on each warning. In general, a lot of the issues are that
you haven't cleaned out the cruft from dh_make. For instance, you
have an extra (s) in the copyright file, README.Debian is just a
template, etc.

Cheers,

Hi!

Your package only contains a JAR file with binary files. You should
compile the Java source files yourself instead.

I have no experience with Java packages myself so I can not help you
there. I found some information about Building Java Packages in
Debian[1] by the Debian Java Packaging Project.

Have you already read the usual documentation on creating Debian

That would be a good project to learn Debian packaging from. I have a
home built version of Woody/Sarge dcc which I recently updated to 1.3.92
and rebuilt for Etch. As I recall the only significant change needed
was to update the copyright to reflect non-free upstream copyright.
I use it very successfully with Debian SpamAssassin.

You could update the packaging to Lenny standards and check if it complies
with Policy 3.8.0 (the previous version was at least three years ago).

Well, this is great, but why would you need to build a package on your own, if
 that's available via apt-get? :)

It is only curiosity to improve my technical skills and observing the
procedure to submit a package for sponsoring help to understand what files to
provide, where to upload them, and anything interesting for newbies... It is
the fearlessness of the youth ! ;)

I started putting together my first Debian package just a few months
ago so I'm very new at packaging too, but thought I'd mention some
things that helped me after reading the required Debian documentation.
My sponsor (Anthony Fok) provided invaluable help and insight borne
of experience. Before I started working with him though, I did a lot
of reading and a fair amount of trial-and-error. If I were starting
over again, I would do two things that I didn't do immediately: study
how everything in debian/rules works very, very carefully and get
Martin Krafft's book.

If you want to package using debhelper scripts (which will make your
life easier), you could first create a skeleton single binary package
with dh_make. After it creates a skeleton, study the debian/rules
file that it creates. Then read the man pages for the various
debhelper (dh*) commands that it invokes. If you want more detail,
read the sources for those debhelper scripts. Finished packages will
probably have some of those scripts removed from debian/rules (if a
particular package doesn't need to use them), but in the skeleton file
you'll see them arranged in their logical order.

I also bought a copy of The Debian System, by Martin F. Krafft, ISBN
1-59327-069-0. It goes into very low-level details of building
packages, down to using basic Unix utilities such as ar. It sounds
like you want such low-level details. But don't put together a
package that way for uploading -- get used to the Debian tools. The
book is also dated (it has a DVD of sarge 3.1r0a in the back and now
we're approaching a lenny release three years later). Most debhelper
scripts are given brief mention. I have not seen another book, web
page, etc. go into such low-level detail on Debian packaging.

I just checked amazon.fr; you can get the book new from someone other
than Amazon there, or order from amazon.fr and get it in 2-4 weeks.
You could probably also order from amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com,
powells.com, or some other US bookstore/website and have it sent from
the US (I don't know how VAT would get handled in that case). I've
ordered French books from amazon.fr that weren't listed on amazon.com,
and they shipped them to me in the US with no problems.

Good luck, and have fun!
