2010-03-30 Thread jdetaeye
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package frePPLe.

FrePPLe stands for Free Production Planning Library. It is a
toolkit/framework for modeling and solving production planning
problems, just growing out its beta stages and ready for prime-time
use in the manufacturing industry.

- Package name : frepple
- Version : 0.8.0
- Upstream Author : jdeta...@users.sourceforge.net
- URL : http://frepple.com
- License : LGPL
- Section : science
- Package URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/f/frepple/

I would be glad if someone reviewed and uploaded this package for me.
(Should be a breeze: The package was reviewed earlier by the Fedora
review team, and is already available as a RPM in the Fedora
distribution - see
https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/name/frepple).

Thanks,

Johan De Taeye

Yeah, about that... you're using 3.0 (quilt) as source format. That
includes quilt functionality, so please don't depend on quilt, don't
write about quilt in README.source (in fact is file is unneeded here)
and don't implement anything quilt-like in debian/rules (which you
already avoided).

I'm sorry, I didn't catch that earlier. But since we're still at it: why
don't you use dh7 style debian/rules? I mean, you don't have to, but you
can avoid the whole DEB_*_GNU_TYPE stuff and shorten your rules file to
a few lines. #559098 is not fixed yet, so the config.* game still has to
be played, though. It's just a suggestion...

PS: README.Debian (I'd prefer that over README.debian) reads well!

RFS: lmfit - Levenberg-Marquardt least squares fitting - corrected version uploaded

2010-03-30 Thread Wuttke, Joachim
Dear mentors,

I am writing once more to ask for a sponsor for my package lmfit.

* Package name: lmfit
  Version : 3.2-1
  Upstream Author : myself
* URL : http://www.messen-und-deuten.de/lmfit/lmfit.html
* License : public domain
  Section : libs

It builds these binary packages:
lmfit - Least-squares minimization and curve fitting
lmfit-dev - Development files for Levenberg-Marquardt library lmfit

The package appears to be lintian clean.

My motivation for maintaining this package is: I have been maintaining
the upstream package since more than five years; it is downloaded
more than 1500 times per year; I get very positive feedback from
fellow scientists wh are using this package for data analysis - now
I want to facilitate installation by supporting .deb in addition to .tgz.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/lmfit
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/lmfit/lmfit_3.2-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

case, I would be grateful if someone could have a look into the
debian/* directory in

No need - Its free-standing from SciTE, does not duplicate any

Ok, here is the thread:

All infos about the (old) package stay inside debian until this package

With the beginning of the (new) package it has to start in the NEW queue

Hello Jon,
thanks for your email.

First of all, please note that a package maintained by the QA Team is
a package without a proper maintainer: the team takes over maintenance
for orphaned packages (those that the previous maintainers, for
various reason, didn't want to maintain anymore).

The email address used is the one for the packages maintainer by QA
team: I'm replacing it with the mailing list address used for
discussions.

If it suits you, I would like to help maintain this package (as well as its

move the widgets away from their own internal ones to GTK, with the aim of
improving the project, and of course, attract more users.

So, in this particular case, you're much welcome to take over the

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 283085

My motivation for maintaining this package is:
I participate in a team to package symfony 1.4. That package is required for symfony 1.4

I used symfony on debian since many years.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/phing
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/p/phing/phing_2.4.1-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.
It's my second attempt and I hope someone can help me.

Kind regards
Nicolas Roudaire

I'm sorry, I didn't catch that earlier. But since we're still at it: why
don't you use dh7 style debian/rules? I mean, you don't have to, but you
can avoid the whole DEB_*_GNU_TYPE stuff and shorten your rules file to
a few lines. #559098 is not fixed yet, so the config.* game still has to
be played, though. It's just a suggestion...

 autotools-dev has debhelper helpers/addons since 20100122.1, so
dh --with autotools_dev $@ (and an appropriate versioned build dep)
 should be enough.

Wow, never saw that. Thanks for mentioning!

So, Ignace, with this you can shorten your debian/rules significantly :)

I have updated (and shortened) the rules file to use the dh7 features.
It has been uploaded on m.d.n [1].

I would be glad if you could take a look at it.

Thank you for that.

Cheers,
 Ignace M

As noted in the previous email, I would like to become a maintainer for this
package, but am painfully unaware of the steps/protocols to do so.

Can I please have some help?

Check out these links:

http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/pkgs.html#adopting
http://www.debian.org/doc/maint-guide/
http://people.debian.org/~mpalmer/debian-mentors_FAQ.html
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/

In short(ish):

Retitle the wnpp bug to ITA (intent to adopt) and set yourself as the owner.

Download the source for the existing package.

Hack on it to resolve bugs, update to new upstream and so on. The
packages.qa.debian.org page for the package lists some of the things
to do.

Upload it to mentors.debian.net and request a sponsor, usually by
sending an RFS mail to this list. More tips in the debian-mentors FAQ
for finding sponsors and so on.

Rinse and repeat the previous two steps a bunch of times.

Apply for DM so you can upload without a sponsor.

Do the same for other packages you use that are orphaned (see wnpp-alert).

Apply for NM so you can upload any package without a sponsor, vote,
login to Debian machines, join core teams and so on. Some core teams
have ways to help out before being a Debian Developer (DD) though.
