A few more updates :)

- Joined the pkg-grass group:
  - Updated maintainers in debian/control
  - Updated VCS links in debian/control
  - Debian files are now hosted at:
http://git.debian.org/?p=pkg-grass/libgis.git
- Use libgis-dev.examples for gis-demo instead of libgis-bin
- Update Recommends/Suggests
- Add debian/clean to delete some generated files
- Fixed a bug that caused a crash when using Mesa

To compile gis-demo:

  gzip -d gis-demo.c.gz
  touch config.h
  gcc -I. --std=c99 -o gis-demo gis-demo.c `pkg-config --libs --cflags libgis`

(I'll be removing the dependency on config.h in the next release)

Everything seems fine. Just one small thing: you're suggesting libgis-doc (=

doesn't apply there. I suggest to entirely drop the version, since it's
documentation, and there's no need of a strict dependency.

After fixing this (just do a commit with that change), and pushing the

Ok, I removed the version and pushed the changes.

I just moved the debian/0.4.2-1 tag this time since it's an initial

  - Your debian/rules file could be greatly simplified if you make use of
debhelper's default behavior. For example, you can use a
debian/install file and let dh_install copy the files automatically
instead of overriding the install target. See [1] and the debhelper
documentation for details.
Thanks for this hint. It really simplified my rules file.

  - I'm not very familiar with debconf, but it doesn't seem like you're
doing anything with it in debian/{pre,post}inst. If it's intentional,
you should remove those files. The same goes for webhoneypot.config.
Okay, that was a remainder of some tests I did. I simply forgot to remove it.

 I hope this helps.
It did a lot.

No. Build-Depends-Indep lists the Build Dependencies needed to build the
 architecture-INDEPendant packages.

In short: your package must build the arch:any packages correctly when only
the Build-Depends are installed. It must be able to build also the arch:all
when the Build-Depends-Indep are also installed. This allows to have
minimal Build-Depends, while extending them with B-D-Indep (usually
documentation building tools) for the arch:all packages.

All that is in Policy 7.7.

I had a look at your package, and just have a few comments:

 - Documentation takes the biggest part of this package. How about
making it separate (python-pygene-doc), so that it can be installed
   only if needed?

 - demo_fractal.py has a small typo that prevents it from running
   properly:

   File ./demo_fractal.py, line 72
 )
 ^
 SyntaxError: invalid syntax

(It should be a '}' instead.)

 - The word wrap in the bullet list in your debian/control file doesn't
look right; for example, in the second bullet point, dimentional
   should be aligned with Several.

 - patches/debian-changes-0.2.1-1 only creates a file called fold.txt,
which contains the same information as debian/control and is not
included in the package; I guess it's a mistake.

information is obviously missing. If you can fill the blanks, that

 Please, CC.

| As a result, it became possible to execute debian/rules with
| 'build-indep' and 'build-arch' targets correspondingly.

No, you can not, at least not in general. That is exactly the
problem. The build-indep and build-arch targets are optional and can't
be detected reliably. So dpkg-buildpackage has to call the build target
even if it only wants to build indep or arch packages. It is only
possible after you manually verified the package does have those
targets, which makes them rather useless.

The more usefull case is calling the binary-indep or binary-arch
targets, which then only depend on build-indep or build-arch
respectively. But since that then builds as (fake)root autobuilders
don't do that without having called build first.

| In practice I can't think of any real world example where this
| scenario can be used. The only useful application may be with
| autobuilders that build a lot of packages from scratch, i.e. in empty
| environment on different systems.

All autobuilders do exactly that. They only build the arch packages and
start from a clean chroot. Installing packages into the build chroot for
each build is a huge drain, esspecially for things like fonts that
get reindexed every time (those 'this might take a while' messages).

| Some people argue that 'build' not necessary calls 'build-indep' or
| 'build-arch', because policy says that it should call, not must
| call. I doubt that there are cases when 'build' doesn't call these -
| in this scenario some packages won't be built at all, just because
| autobuilders can't call anything, but 'build'.

I believe there are several cases. And autobuilders can build them just
fine. The secret is to have the binary-% targets depend on build-%
instead of build. The build targets itself can potentially do
nothing. That way build-indep and build-arch are called as needed
although at a later time and as (fake)root. It certainly isn't nice to
do this but it is the only way to make Build-Depends-Indep usefull.

Note: A less ugly case is having build depend on build-arch but not
build-indep. That way autobuilders build as normal user and only the
indep packges are build as (fake)root.

RFS: klatexformula

2010-11-18 Thread Tobias Winchen
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package klatexformula.

* Package name: klatexformula
  Version : 3.2.1-1
Upstream Author : Philippe Faist philippe.fa...@bluewin.ch
* URL : http://klatexformula.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
  Section : tex

It builds these binary package:
klatexformula - GUI to easily get an image from a LaTeX formula or equation

The upload would fix these bugs: 551335

I started working on the package about year ago and worked already with a
sponsor on this, who however lost the interest in the package. I would really
like to see the package in Debian, as it proviedes an nice GUI for typing
equations and drag them as pictures into presentations.

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/k/klatexformula
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/k/klatexformula/klatexformula_3.2.1-1.dsc

or

http://bitbucket.org/tobias.winchen/klatexformula_debian/downloads/

The build system has changed upstream and now Lintian gives some warnings:

W: klatexformula: non-dev-pkg-with-shlib-symlink usr/lib/libklfbackend.so.3.2
usr/lib/libklfbackend.so
W: klatexformula: non-dev-pkg-with-shlib-symlink usr/lib/libklfapp.so.3.2
usr/lib/libklfapp.so
W: klatexformula: non-dev-pkg-with-shlib-symlink usr/lib/libklftools.so.3.2
usr/lib/libklftools.so
W: klatexformula: package-name-doesnt-match-sonames libklfapp3.2
libklfbackend3.2 libklftools3.2

As I understand it I could solve these by creating three library packages and
accompaninging development packages. However, as klatexformula is a small
program and I doubt that there is interest in the lib and -dev packages, can
these simply be ignored (and overriden), or is it preferred to have the full
set of lib and dev packages?

Kind regards

The package builds git, gitk, git-gui, gitweb, git-daemon-run, git-doc,

Thanks for the reply.
One question: how did you get lintian to report the first-person... and

I'll wait with the new package till I can configure debian/watch i.e. the
