 Hello!

I have a question. Since maintainers of LXDE are extremely busy
last few months I would like to find a way to upload latest
upstream version of libfm and pcmanfm into experimental
 repository.

Hi,

Please don't feel sorry for trying to help. But also understand that the
maintainers of a specific package usually work on there spare time and
are concentrating on the release.

I'm not sure if anyone but the LXDE maintainers would upload these
packages for you, even in experimental.

There are two things you can do:
1- make your packages readily available on the internet, but not in
the official archive;
2- help the official maintainer integrate your changes.

1- make the packages publicly available:

I would try building the binaries on at least the two most popular
architectures, i386 and amd64. Choose a version number such as
 x.y.z-0~andrej
to make it sorts before any future official version, including NMUs
and backports.

You would then need to upload the source and binary packages to some
website. github can serve you here.

Finally, just mention it in the bug reports, so users can find your
updated packages.

2- Two things to do to help your work reach the official archive:
a- Send your changes to the bugreport(s) as a patch and tag the bug(s)
+patch (this is almost a must do)
b- Prepare another source package (with version such as x.y.z-1~exp1,
sorting after your personal package), make it available on the web
(e.g. on http://mentors.debian.net/) and send an RFS
_to_the_official_maintainers_. You can also, in addition, make this
RFS a bug against the sponsorship-requests pseudo package but
please explain the situation carefully there.

Kind regards, Thibaut.

Rest of original post:

I feel sorry that I constantly bug the maintainers with the same
question and I think they already hate me that I ask them despite
they are still have no time for that. So I would like do not bore
them anymore. I have all the required debian/* files which are
files from 0.1.17 / 0.9.10 versions with some corrections needed to
conform Debian Policy rules where they were not and adapted to all
what was changed in upstream. Packages made with those files are
proven to be created and installed smoothly on Wheezy. Those
debian/* files are public available on
https://github.com/LStranger/. Why I would like to upload them into
experimental? That is simple - I would like to let people in Debian
BTS who are struggling from bugs that prevent them from usage of
old versions of pcmanfm to get current version which is free of all
those bugs. So question is - may it be possible to upload them into
experimental or I have still to bother maintainers? I feel sorry to
 do that again.

 Thank you very much. Andriy.

LeechCraft is a free open source cross-platform modular internet-client. It
consists of a core which defines common plugin interfaces and a lot of plugins
for different purposes. User can install any combination of them to achieve
the necessary functionality.

The main advantage of such approach is that modules could interact more closely
than standalone programs in usual Desktop Environments. Thus, plugins can also
rely on functionality provided by each other. Plugins could also have their own
plugins: for example, support for different protocols or chat window styles in
an IM client.

Also developers don't reinvent the wheel for each protocol. They use existing
solutions (rasterbar libtorrent for BitTorrent or QXmpp for XMPP protocol
for example) if possible. And they contribute back their patches to the upstream
in these cases.

Many changes were done in the project during these months. For example, fork of
QXmpp library was finally merged into upstream and current package qxmpp from
unstable satisfies build dependencies of leechcraft. See details:

I didn't look at this package, just as a general hint:
grep -ir copyright .
is a simple means to find the easy cases where the string Copyright
is contained in a file.

Shouldn't the copyright file also mention download location for sprop

I'd prefer if create_get_orig source downloaded a specific revision of
prop (currently ecfe2752b310) rather than tip. That would make the
script more deterministic.

Would you mind preparing also a package for Wheezy, with *minimal* fixes
for #685611 (and perhaps other bugs that would fit the freeze
criteria[0])?

The versioned build-dependency on python is insufficient; as per

Upstream seems to provide a test suite. Please run it at build time.

Upstream provides some examples. It might be worth including them in the
binary package.

In msrplib/digest.py:

| try:
| nonce_dec = b64decode(nonce)
| issued, nonce_ip = nonce_dec[16:].split(:, 1)
| issued = float(issued)
| except:
| raise LoginFailed(Could not decode nonce)

This would catch KeyboardInterrupt and other unexpected errors. Please
catch only exceptions you _do_ expect.

Are you sure the way msrplib uses the random module is secure? The
documentation says this module is completely unsuitable for
cryptographic purposes.

Renaming files, patching, renaming files, unpatching, and 3.0 (quilt)

2012-10-09 Thread Jasmine Hassan
Dear Mentors,

I'm surprised this topic hasn't been covered, as I thought it would be
important, at least in some cases.

For instance, I'm packaging Compiz 0.8.8, for MATE desktop. This, at
least initially, requires a lot of code substitutions, and quite a few
file/dir renaming. (ex.: gnome - mate, gconf - mateconf, metacity -
marco, etc.) I use a home-brewed migration script to generate actions
for that.

Now, doing `quilt add files_to_rename new_filenames; mv
files_to_rename new_filenames; quilt refresh`, alone, would make a
huge, unnecessary patch. I might as well modify the upstream tarball
and use that as the orig, which, of course, is not proper.
But, if I could rename the files just after patching, and rename back
just before unpatching, then I can keep a *much* smaller sized
debian/patches/*, and also generally more portable.

Unfortunately, use of override_dh_quilt_(un)patch isn't feasible as it
would require doing dh $@ --with quilt, which is against '3.0 (quilt)'
source package format policy.
Trying to do both at the same time; --with quilt and 3.0 (quilt)
format, results in dpkg-source --after-build breaking the build
process, because the override_dh_quilt_unpatch is never invoked at
that stage. Going back to source format 1.0 isn't a desirable option.

So, I was doing something like:
--
dh $@ --with autoreconf

override_dh_auto_configure:
  [ -f new.c ] || mv orig.c new.c
  ...
  dh_auto_configure -- $(confflags)

override_dh_clean:
  [ -f orig.c ] || mv new.c orig.c
  ..
  dh_clean
--
But, unfortunately, that also breaks when dpkg-source --after-build is
invoked, because it skips the rules file, and of so override_dh_clean
has no effect to it.

Same sad story was covered on this list *months* ago, with no proper solution:
http://lists.debian.org/debian-mentors/2012/05/msg00131.html
It basically ends with: It's a bug, just use debuild -tc.
This basically just tells dpkg-buildpackage to run `fakeroot
debian/rules clean`, before it calls `dpkg-source --after-build`.
But has this even been reported as a bug, yet? Shouldn't it be?

Meanwhile, I thought I could find a straightforward workaround, in
debian/rules itself, as I noticed dh_gencontrol happens right before
dpkg-source is invoked, and since I already had an
override_dh_gencontrol, I tried to separate my reverse-renaming into a
seperate sequence, to be called from both override_dh_clean and the
former. Like so:
--
pre_unpatch:
[ -f orig.c ] || mv new.c orig.c
...

override_dh_clean: pre_unpatch
dh_clean

override_dh_gencontrol: pre_unpatch
dh_gencontrol -- $(gencontrol_V_opts)
--

But that didn't make the slightest difference. Nor did calling
dh_clean (which is overridden to reverse-rename files) from
override_dh_gencontrol. Nor with override_dh_builddeb. Nothing of all
the aforementioned would allow the reverse-renaming in the debuild
process before dpkg-source was invoked.

Finally, I found something that works:

override_dh_builddeb: pre_unpatch
dh_builddeb

Shouldn't this be mentioned anywhere? At least in 3.0 (quilt) docs?
Is renaming files after patching and before unpatching advised against?
Is there a better solution?

Best,
Jasmine

Hi,

Has this been reported as a bug yet?

The only thing I found to work is:

pre_unpatch:
[ -f orig.c ] || mv new.c orig.c
...

override_dh_clean: pre_unpatch
dh_clean

# This forces the rename right before dpkg-source --after-build
override_dh_builddeb: pre_unpatch

Bug#683184: RFS: suckless-tools/39-1 [ITA]

On Wed, Oct 10, 2012 at 1:53 AM, Jakub Wilk jw...@debian.org wrote:
Shouldn't the copyright file also mention download location for sprop (i.e.

Does source: field allow multiple URL's? According to Debian
copyright-format [0]
this field can be free form text which means I can put with a note
that sprop was
got from the different URL like below

Source: http://dl.suckless.org/tools except sprop which was downloaded
from hg tip at http://hg.suckless.org

I'd prefer if create_get_orig source downloaded a specific revision of prop
(currently ecfe2752b310) rather than tip. That would make the script more
 deterministic.

Well yes I will modify it and also I will try to persuade conor lane
smith to put it in dl.suckless.org ;-)
that way it will be more clean for both above source: field and get-orig-source

Would you mind preparing also a package for Wheezy, with *minimal* fixes for
#685611 (and perhaps other bugs that would fit the freeze criteria[0])?

Yes I can do that I was just not sure whether to do it or not :-).
Only problem will be I can track this wheezy source
in my current git reposiotory but I guess the old repository still
exist and only just renamed. I will prepare this and
ping back to you tonight!

Just a note is it okay to change Vcs-* field in this version even
though its not mentioned in bug report?

Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package nestopia.

 * Package name: nestopia
   Version : 1.40h+dfsg-1
Upstream Author : Martin Freij and R. Belmont
 * URL : http://rbelmont.mameworld.info/?page_id=200
 * License : GPL-2.0+
   Section : games

This is an alternative to FCEU and Mednafen which are already in Debian; its
emulation is more faithful than that provided by either of those emulators.
I am also the maintainer of the mednafen package in Debian, within the
Debian Games Team (which I've also specified as the maintainer for the
nestopia package).

To access further information about this package, please visit the following
URL:

  http://mentors.debian.net/package/nestopia

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

  dget -x
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/n/nestopia/nestopia_1.40h+dfsg-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards,

Stephen Kitt

Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: wishlist

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package reviewboard

 * Package name: reviewboard
   Version : 1.6.5-1
Upstream Author : Christian Hammond, David Trowbridge
 * URL : http://reviewboard.org/
 * License : MIT
   Section : devel

It builds those binary packages:

reviewboard - Web-based code review tool
   reviewboard-doc - ReviewBoard documentation

To access further information about this package, please visit the following
URL:

   http://mentors.debian.net/package/reviewboard

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

   dget -x
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/r/reviewboard/reviewboard_1.6.5-1.dsc

Package has a few overridden pedantic/experimental lintian warnings
mostly because it has some test data in source tarball (that is not
distributed within binary packages). Otherwise it seems to be
lintian-clean

ReviewBoard is powerful web-based code review tool. It allows one
developers to publish code review request either using web browser or
special post-review tool for compatible VCS (that is already packaged in
python-rbtools package). Other developers can look though changes using
web browser, post comments, etc. One of the coolest feature is ability to
do some kind of incremental reviews: reviewers can display only portion
of diff changed since previous review for same patch.

More information about ReviewBoard is available at http://reviewboard.org/

Looks like currently Debian archive lacks such tools at all.

PS. This package depends on two other packages with python modules that
are not currently in Debian. I've already filled RFS for them:

   python-django-djblets/0.6.17-1 -- #669598
   python-django-evolution/0.6.7-1 -- #669599

So until they are uploaded, this is mostly request for review.
