Re: ghdl package has been removed from Mentors
On 2014-07-19, mentors.debian.net wrote: Your package ghdl all versions has been removed from mentors.debian.net for the following reason: Your package found no sponsor for 20 weeks Ok. This comes as a bit of a surprise, and it may be unfortunate. My idea was that, even if no sponsor would be found, at least mentors.debian.net would reflect the latest state of development of the package, possibly as a starting point for further work. By removing the package, you have made my work unavailable for the world, and you have also deleted any comments that were posted by prospective sponsors. On the other hand, it is true that I have essentially given up on attempts to get my package into the distribution. I can understand that you want to focus mentors.debian.net on work which is actively developed, and not let it become a dumping ground for half-finished stuff. Fair enough. I will simply move the packaging files back to my personal website. Two points which I think you should consider: * A little warning ahead of time would be nice before you delete stuff. I don't see your 20-weeks rule in the QA, for example. * If I follow the URL to my (now deleted) package page, I would expect an error message saying that the packgage does not currently exist. Instead, the server silently redirects me to the list of packages. That is not helpful. If something goes completely wrong inside a computer, it is important to tell the user about it. There is this misguided notion that users dislike error messages, therefore software should never report errors. Please don't believe that. I actually found two Debian developers who have been very helpful and were willing to sponsor the package. Unfortunately we then discovered a copyright issue which makes it impossible to distribute GHDL in the Debian archive. I'm still making unofficial GHDL Debian packages available, but my efforts to get GHDL in the Debian archive are on hold. So I agree that this packages does not belong on mentors.debian.net right now. But I think the removal process could be more careful to avoid losing track of work that has already been done. Re: ghdl package has been removed from Mentors
I agree with Joris. Users are not properly informed that discussions on mentors.debian.net may be automatically lost after a package is removed from mentors.debian.net. This should be changed. I would rather see the information backed-up in some way before it is deleted. Does this require a bug report again debexpo, or is this mailing list the place for a discussion? * Johannes Schauer j.scha...@email.de, 2014-07-18, 12:00: But there's a good reason --dry-run is described as “unsafe” in the mktemp manpage. What is the reason? I thought the reason for it being called unsafe was that if you use --dry-run first and then create the directory with that name yourself then somebody else could hijack that location in the meantime. That's right. But this is no problem for this use case. I don't know the nature of the copyright issue but in general if Debian can't distribute something, mentors can't either. It sounds like you should have removed ghdl from mentors immediately after discovering this issue. BTW, ghdl is still in unstable/oldstable, should it be removed from there too? https://packages.qa.debian.org/g/ghdl.html -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-mentors-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Hello, I ask for this[1] bug against remmina. Remmina does not use openssl. It uses libssh, which is linked against openssl. Must Remmina also have the license exception?
