Bug#928892: heimdall-flash: package appears to be a salvaging candidate

2019-07-24 Thread Nicholas D Steeves
Dear Steve Langasek and contributors to these threads,

Steve, are you still interested in maintaining this package?

Heimdall-flash has not seen an update since 2016, and Bug #872788
requesting an update to 1.4.2 has not received a reply from the
maintainer for almost two years. Bug #874915 notes the issue of qt4
removal, which further highlights the necessity of packaging 1.4.2,
which has qt5 support.

I believe this package meets the criteria for salvaging:

https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/ch05.en.html#package-salvaging

François Etcheverry (see debian-mentors archive for "Bug#928892: RFS:
heimdall-flash/1.4.2-1") appears to be a new contributor who is still
unfamiliar with Debian process, is probably not yet using a good MUA
and is thus struggling with the BTS. Finally, he's definitely is not
familiar with the salvaging process, given that there is not yet an
ITS bug against this package. I hope to see him learn the necessary
processes, and learn how to use the necessary tools during the
Bullseye release cycle. At this time I believe that he will need the
support of a comaintainer, mentor, and sponsor to proceed with an ITS,
and I fear we will lose a potential long-term contributor if he does
find this support.

François, using the "reportbug" program against sponsorship-requests,
and then using the Debian Mentors template to fill in the body would
have prevented the problems at #928892. Also, you need to figure out
what caused all of your newlines to be eaten... I suspect it's not
something as simple as using an editor that soft-wraps lines, but
whatever the cause for this malfunctioning, it will cause you
unnecessary work as it malinteracts with the BTS. Finally, are you
interested in learning everything that is required to maintain
heimdall-flash long-term, or is your RFS a one-time contribution?

Regards,
Nicholas

So, I now have an ppc64 chroot, installed the BD's of asymptote and guess:

..I'm failing to reproduce the problem. As the build fails on the buildd
always at the point I don't think we look at an random error.

How to proceed?

See the discussion in bug #907020 [1] for all details. The short version is
that in August 2018 Christian introduced new autopkgtest tests in 1.18-2
which didn't work due to lack of root access. #907020 was opened as a
result and Christian made the fix during the same day in Salsa. However,
for some reason, that fix was never uploaded. Last week the severity of
#907020 was changed from normal to serious placing the package to the
autoremoval queue. As I wasn't able to get in touch with Christian, I
concluded that doing a NMU for the changes he had already made in Salsa
would be the right thing to do. That's why the policy bump is to version
4.2.1 as I didn't want to mix in any of my own changes.

I'm hoping that Christian would continue as maintainer of this package but
he appears to be inactive right now and I haven't managed to get in contact
via email or IRC.

OK, one step further. Running that command inside an VirtualBox VM
caused the error.

Doing the same on the host (running still Debian oldstable) failed b/c
package debian-ports-archive-keyring contains just expired keys and the
signing key is not contained. I had to upgrade to the version from unstable.

Now we are at

I: Configuring libc-bin...
I: Unpacking the base system...

This exact command mostly worked for me. It failed later, with
"powerpc-utils depends on pmac-utils; however: Package pmac-utils is not

/usr/bin/qemu-ppc64-static is launched.

Gathering debug data from buildd's?

2019-07-24 Thread Hilmar Preuße
Hi,

dumb question: since a few releases we have problems to build a package
on ppc64 [1]. The resulting binary segfaults when generating files. I
reported the problem upstream: they asked me for core dumps/gdb output.

How to proceed: I could try to get access to a porter box through an RT
request (took last time 2 month to be processed). Are there other/faster
methods, e.g. gathering the data from the buildd itself?

Thanks!
