This is a backport from Debian testing with a couple of build fixes.
Backports are only allowed from this distribution in most cases and for
sid (unstable) very rarely. See below for information on backports.

You cannot make this an architecture wildcard, because wildcards
resolve to real architectures in the .deb, which would still be
Architecture: all, which means dak would add it to all architectures.
So there needs to be some sort of hint in the .changes file to make
dak restrict the availability of the package to the arches matching
the linux-all wildcard.

Bug#960940: RFS: runit/2.1.2-37 [RC] -- system-wide service supervision

2020-05-18 Thread David Kalnischkies
Hi,

Disclaimer: Not sponsoring as I am oblivious to init systems of all
kinds, so I don't feel confident reviewing changes in that area.

(I am not stalking you – I promise! – I just couldn't let that
opportunity pass by after pushing another set of apt resolver changes
 triggered by your packages :P)

On Mon, May 18, 2020 at 05:43:55PM +0200, Lorenzo Puliti wrote:
>* Merge runit-sysv and runit-systemd into runit-run (Closes: #953875)

You are using unversioned Breaks+Replaces – please make them versioned.
It is perhaps unlikely that packages with that name will reappear in the
archive, but never say never…

Related, but as a matter of style only, I would release package
reorganisations always to experimental first: a) you need to clear NEW
and b) there is usually at least one bug in it you want to fix quickly,
but a) makes it unpredictable then that emergency will be.
(also c) you need another upload to move to testing as NEW needs
binaries to be uploaded, but they wont go into testing).

Also, but that is bike shed material: "-run" ?
I don't have a good suggestion, but I think for the uninitiated
-run and -init will be indistinguishable (also: run-it-run, init!).

| debian/runit-run.postinst

I see that the same code was used before, but:
a) make that a function instead of two code copies
b) consider that a file might not have an ending newline:
$ echo -n 'foo' > foo
$ cat foo - < bar
heredoc> EOF
foobar
$

Best regards

Yes, that works - but it creates some 19 packages that are bitwise
identical. Perhaps I'm old-school if I consider that not quite the best
approach. Although in times of source tarballs the size of gigabytes,
mirror disk space isn't really an issue.

On the plus side, linux-any instead of all avoids lintian's nasty
not-binnmuable-all-depends-any warnings from the dependencies between
the packages :)

Hi!
Sorry for the delay.

There's one problem left: the .symbols file for libgrokj2k1 declares a
dependency on libgrokj2k (rather than 2k1). Please bump it a year ahead :)

Yes, but there is also no "mips-all" (mips, mipsel, mips64el) or "x86-
all" (amd64, i386, x32, with or without the non-Linux variants of
these). They might be used for some firmware or bootloader packages.

No, currently we just keep uninstallable packages. The same happens on
Linux if dependencies cannot be satisfied on all Linux ports.

One can make packages build on "linux-any" instead of "all", but I
don't think it provides much value over some uninstallable packages.

Have you tried "linux-any", which would match "any" as the default
wildcard for any architecture specific binary package (vs. "all", which
really means "architecture independent")?

No "linux-all" architecture wildcard

2020-05-18 Thread Christoph Biedl
Hello,

while packaging something that makes sense on Linux only, but one of the
built packages is architecture-*in*dependent while depending on some
of the linux-any ones - in other words, that arch-indep package makes
no sense on non-linux ...

The obivous way to declare architecture-all-but-linux-only binary
packages was

| Architecture: linux-all

but there is no such architecture wildcard. That package isn't build, also
lintian emits an according warning.

But isn't that a missing feature? The only reference I found about this
is somewhat older:

| As you may derive from their names, those
| packages are not at all useful for kfreebsd as they are tightly linked
| with the Linux kernel and exist on kfreebsd only because no one cared to
| implement "architecture: linux-all" so far.

So yes, the only side-effect of there current situation is non-linux has
some unusable or even uninstallable packages. Or did I miss a sane way
to keep arch-indep packages out of non-linux?

Christoph
