This is why I think packaging it at all is possibly a bad idea since people running Debian stable/oldstable will always have old information. It would be better if the software that uses it were to be responsible for downloading it periodically. [Kerrect speeling note: Instead of updation of, I probably would have written updates [of/to].] Sorry for the typo. I'll correct my spellings in the future :) Wouldn't this combination of factoids [(1) that the package has regular commits upstream of important data contained within the package, (2) that the package therefore needs to be frequently updated to get the new data from upstream incorporated into the package, and (3) that these updates need to be made available to people running Debian stable and oldstable without requiring those people to install a version of this package from testing or unstable] therefore suggest that this package is a candidate for debian-volatile (or whatever that is called these days)? I've been subscribing to the applicable Debian announcement mailing list (debian-volatile-announce@lists.d.o) for a little while now, and I see mention of updates to tzdata and clamav. Looking at http://lists.debian.org/debian-volatile-announce/2011/msg0.html , I guess it's now called squeeze-updates, not debian-volatile. However, the point still stands: This suite will contain updates that satisfy one of the following criteria: [...] * The package in question is a data package and the data must be updated in a timely manner (e.g. tzdata). I was thinking of uploading regular stable release updates both in debian and ubuntu. I'll work on this regard coming weekend. Thanks for all inputs and support. As for if there should be a watch file, or what the watch file should be if there should be one at all, that I do not know. (Is there a facility / capability yet for watching for changes to a git / bzr / hg / svn / cvs / etc archive, and should that facility be used instead for this package instead of watching a (relatively) static tarball file if the facility is available for use?) Yes the package does have a git handle: http://git.gnome.org/browse/mobile-broadband-provider-info/ but there is nothing as such as a static tarball on the site. Need more clarity on this. It probably needs some rewording to not mention lintian (amongst other things), but it is very much appropriate to mention the upstream tarball situation in debian/watch. I personally would use something that looks at this location: http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/gnome/sources/mobile-broadband-provider-info/ Really though, I'm not sure the packaging system is the correct way to distribute this data anyway, since you usually always want the latest version. We are stuck with it until upstream changes that though. Perhaps we need some update-usbids/update-pciids style mechanism in the meantime though. Please fix the following issues and I will upload it: Please close the relevant Launchpad bugs in the changelog using (LP: #1234) so that once Ubuntu syncs the package, the relevant bugs will be automatically closed. You can find the relevant Launchpad bugs in the upstream git log. Okay sure paul! You also added a love poem in 'debian/new file', I would suggest that is not useful in a source package and should be removed, cute though it is :) Sorry! it was added by mistake :) The following issues are not blockers for this upload: Since upstream uses autotools, you can use 'make distcheck' to create the tarball in debian/rules get-orig-source. Then let upstream know if that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for Debian. The default upstream tarball format seems to be .tar.bz2 so you will need to add a bunzip2 ...tar.bz2 | gzip -9 ...tar.gz to the process at least until post-squeeze when you could switch to dpkg-source v3 (IIRC the release team prefers not to unblock dpkg-source format version changes). I just noticed that the version number is incorrect since upstream hasn't bumped the version in configure.ac, please talk to upstream about that. Probably the version number needs to be autogenerated based on the date of the latest git commit when the tarball is generated with make distcheck. The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that. Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised version of CC-PD. -- bye, pabs http://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise -- Bhavani Shankar.R https://launchpad.net/~bhavi, a proud ubuntu community member. The deb files and other files that have resulted from build is copied there. Note that the default value is not the current directory, or.. butanotherplace, /var/cache/pbuilder/result This is to avoid overwriting already existing deb files with the newly generated ones. Then let upstream know if that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for Debian. Okay ll do it! The 39 Ubuntu bugs, see if they apply to Debian/upstream and send patches as appropriate. At least two of those bugs contains a patch so it would be great if you could do this. At least one of them is fixed upstream and probably fixed in Debian already, you could close that one in launchpad. BTW, for future reference, if you put (LP: #1234) in debian/changelog then the appropriate launchpad bug will be closed when the package is autosynced to Ubuntu. Okay sure! (I ve been forwarding the reports upstream based on their relevance) The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that. Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised version of CC-PD. Mailed Anti about this.. Waiting for a response soon! Hi Paul, I was curious to see if I could find any issues since Kartik had no comment on the upload at all. Here is what I found (mostly minor stuff): There is a typo in the package description: s/thier/their/ The package description has rather awkward grammar, please ask for help to improve it on debian-l10n-english. The upstream target in debian/rules should be named get-orig-source: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules I ll correct this in the next upload thanks The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that. I will poke the upstream maintainer on it The package is yet to be debtagged: http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/edit.html?pkg=mobile-broadband-provider-info Will do it now... There are a ton of bugs filed on this package in Ubuntu and a couple in Fedora. Some comments: Please read libpkg-guide and its two bugs if you haven't already. debian/rules upstream target should be named get-orig-source: http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules debian/watch should not mention lintian. In addition it isn't very clear, I'd suggest this instead: # Right now GNUpdf is under heavy development and they have not released a version yet. debian/changelog need not mention lintian either, except maybe in thanks. Insert my standard comment about library package descriptions being almost duplicates of each other. Think about the audience for each one. -dev package will be manually installed by people developing apps using liboauth and also as part of build-depends. The library should only be installed automatically so it doesn't need a verbose description. The debug symbols will be manually installed (at least for now) but don't need the detail of the -dev package. Similarly, the library package does not need AUTHORS installed. Your orig.tar.gz contains two copies of the source code, one in trunk/ - I imagine your debian/rules upstream target is broken. Since it is an autotools based project, I would suggest running upstream's 'make distcheck' to create the tarball instead of doing manually. If any files are missing from the result or if it fails to build you can send upstream a patch. There are some files upstream forgot to add a license grant to: ./src/base/pdf-stm-be.h: *No copyright* UNKNOWN ./src/base/pdf-stm-be.c: *No copyright* UNKNOWN ./torture/unit/runtests.c: UNKNOWN The copyright years in debian/control should be 1987 to 2010. The info documentation should not be in the library package, instead put it in the -dev package or a separate documentation package. It is a policy violation to put files whose names do not change into the library package. Please either move the utils and info docs to the -dev package or split them out into gnupdf-utils/libgnupdf-doc packages (or similar). The package FTBFS in pbuilder (missing build-depends on check). In addition it requires a newer version of check than is in sid or released upstream: The following required libraries are too old: libcheck (svn required) In addition, I wonder if the following need to be added to build-deps: checking for libjpeg... no checking for libjbig2dec... no checking for libcurl... no checking for libiconv... no checking for texi2html... no I stopped reviewing the package at this point due to the FTBFS. Once you figure out how to work around the issues with 'check', please run the following lintian command: lintian --info --display-info --display-experimental --pedantic --show-overrides --checksums --color auto foo.changes Okay paul thanks for your real good review .. ll work on it Regards -- Bhavani Shankar.R https://launchpad.net/~bhavi, a proud ubuntu community member.
