RFS: NMU goocanvas (updated package)

2010-05-07 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 0.15-0.1

It builds these binary packages:
libgoocanvas-common - translations for goocanvas
libgoocanvas-dev - development libraries, include files and documentation for
goocan
libgoocanvas3 - canvas widget for GTK+ that uses the cairo 2D library

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix #521722, which is blocking several
other bugs and #528620

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:

Also, can you correct your build target so that it can be restarted if it has

Do you mean that if you control-C during the build, or the build fails

Re: RFS: iulib (5th attempt)

2009-07-20 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
Hi Charles,

2009/7/19 Charles Plessy ple...@debian.org:
our tools do not invoke the build target twice in a row, but real people
sometimes have a good reason to do. For instance, I tried to build iulib it
 did
not work because I was missing dependancies, and when I installed them and
called the build target again, it triggered the bug discussed above. A good
makefile should be resilient to this.

How did you do this? Simply running

$ ./debian/rules build

a second time, produces:

dh --with quilt build

and dh knows it isn't necessary and doesn't build.

Talking about dependancies, since there are only three versions of the libtool
package in circulation, you can probably depend on versions higher than Lenny.
Alternatively, you can support both: it looks easy. It would be especially
useful if you think that there are chances your package would be backported.
If the scons migration for the 0.4 version implies to drop libtool, you do not
need to put too much energy into this…

The latter. I want to get a clean package into the NEW queue, and
while it sits there, I'll work on v0.4.

A much more problematic issue is the binary dependancies of libiulib0. You
 have
devised a long list by hand, but it is not accurate for Sid, which is the
target of your package. There is at least one error: libavcodec51 does not
exist there. Do you have evidence that ${shlibs:Depends} is not enough?

No. I've removed everything but ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}

Probably. Maybe you can submit a whishlist bug, or if you have time, try to
 write such a check.

Done[1,2].

PS: do you know how to write a symbols control file? (me not).

dpkg-gensymbols -O -plibiulib0

gives me output... But how to know I am using it correctly...

I've uploaded the updated package to mentors.

Re: RFS: iulib (5th attempt)

2009-07-18 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
2009/7/18 Charles Plessy ple...@debian.org:
I found some issues in the latest version of your package:

  - The build target can not been invoked twice in a row because of the mv
commands (you know what to do, you did it right for the clean target).

dh7 won't invoke the build target more than once, so I think this is OK.

  - The build dependancies are not tight enough: in earlier versions of
 libtool,
ltmain.sh is not in /usr/share/libtool/config/ but in /usr/share/libtool.

I assume that libtool should be (=2), but I can't find any
documentation for this.

  - The dependancy of libiulib-dev should be versioned on libiuli0. The
 symbolic
   link /usr/lib/libiulib.so - libiulib.so.0.0.0 will break otherwise.

Isn't this could be something that lintian should check for, along
with that .la files should be in -dev?

I've added (= ${binary:Version}) to the dependency.

I've uploaded the updated package to mentors.

2009-07-17 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
2009/7/14 Charles Plessy ple...@debian.org:
I had a look at your package and wonder if the .la file should not be in
libiulib-dev instead of libiulib0. Can you comment on this?

According to the libpkg-guide[1] you are absolutely right. I've fixed this.

You patched the iulib to ‘libtoolize’ it in order to enable dynamic linking to
it. Have you discussed this with the upstream authors? Have you also discussed
or forwarded the two other patches that you wrote? Once it is done, you can
document this in a machine-readable way as a patch header following the draft
 DEP-3 format.  http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep3

Both patches were from upstream. I have added description and origin
tags to the patches.

Upstream sees to have switched the extension name of their tar archives from
.tar.gz to .tgz, breaking your watch file. The current version seems to be
 0.4.
Maybe you can check if your patches are still necessary with this version
 before
 contacting Upstream.

Thanks for spotting the change in filename. I've fixed the watchfile
to catch both. Unfortunately, v0.4 doesn't seem to play well with
autotools, and the advice from upstream was to rewrite the packaging
to use scons. v0.4 was released after I put my first RFS for iulib on
mentors, and I'd like to see it uploaded before throwing the packaging
away to start on v0.4.

This said, you would probably have increased your chances by giving more
context, in particular by explaining that you would like to package this
library because it is needed to update ocropus, a package for optical
 character
recognition that you maintain since since March, and that started to use this
library. This is much more motivating than ‘The upload would fix these bugs:
 508143’.

Thanks for the advice, I'll do so in future RFS mails.

I've uploaded the updated package to mentors.

Jeff

Pbuilder only auto-installs the dependencies after cleaning the package -
but it will not do this as the clean fails.  You might fix this by doing
dh_quilt_unpatch || true in your clean.

It builds fine in my pbuilder without this.

Second, you need a build-dep for libtool which is required by the build.

Grrr. Yes, thanks.

In your control file, libiulib-dev Depends: on libiulib, however your

OK. Added.

As well, there is a pedantic Lintian warning: P: iulib source:
source-contains-svn-control-dir .  Seems like each of your dirs has the

would think worth re-creating the tarball for, but might be worth asking

Hi Sandro,

2008/12/7 Sandro Tosi [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
packages: the inter-dependencies. What you usually want it ocropus to
depends on ocropus-data for the same version of the source package,
hence you need this versioned depends ocropus-data (=
${source:Version}). This will ensure that on upgrades, both package
are updated (if not -data will be left to the previous version, since
 already installed).

I think it has to be

ocropus-data (= ${source:Version})

We really don't want to be mixing versions here.

understand why, and the reason is gmail to wrap lines. This one works:

 $ cat debian/watch

Thanks. I hadn't got your example working, and was previously told by
a DD in a private mail that it wasn't possible.

and so we discover that there is a new upstream release: what you
wanna do with it? go for ocropus 0.2, wait for it to be accepted and
the upgrade? or start preparing the new version for upload?

No. I originally packaged 0.2 and uploaded it to mentors before 0.3.1
was available. Let's get it accepted and I'll work on the new version
in the mean time.

don't call dh_clean in config.status: if you want to remove that file
there, it's fine to use 'rm', while in clean target it's better use
dh_clean because it removes even other files the the one listed as

Fair point. Thanks.

 way).

Hi Sandro,

Apologies for the delay in making the changes.

Thanks for looking at the package.

like package is a short description

 - I don't know if it's importa (but may exist some backoffice tool
that cares about uppercases), but I'd uncapitalize the email address

un-experienced users may understand what the package does

 - in long description OCRopus is development is sponsored by Google
i think it's better OCRopus development is sponsored by Google, what
 about?

Yup. Done.

 - you don't usually need usr/bin in debian/dirs (it's usually
 created by install steps)

Done.

 - what about include in debian/ocroscript.1 the options listed at
 http://sites.google.com/site/ocropus/documentation ? consider the
situation where a user has no net connection and still wants to use
ocroscript. And repeating the long description in the manpage adds no
information to the users: please expand it to be usefull and please

Done.

 - please add a debian/watch file, man uscan for examples

I don't think this is possible for software hosted by Google

 - since you claim to be Standards-Version: 3.8.0 and using a patch
system, you have to add a debian/README.source explaining how you
patch the upstream source code (for a quilt example, take a look at
 matplotlib package).

That one passed me by. Thanks for pointing it out. Done.

 - patches have no documentation about what they do; dpatch added a #
DP: line where you can explain what the patch does (along with other
information like the patch author), do you mind add such information
(to be clear about the patch scope)?

I've just discovered that you can put comments # at the top of a quilt
patch and refresh respects them. Done.

 - given that debian/patches/distclean added some files to be deleted
by upstream distclean target, and clean: unpatch this means that the
patch is removed before clean target in debian/rules is called, hence
invalidating the patch. One solution could be add another target:

 clean: clean-patched unpatch
 clean-patched: patch-stamp
   commands for the clean target

 - It's usually better depends on patch-stamp (or the exported quilt
variable, check man quilt) instead of patch, so please fix build-stamp
 target

OK. I think I've done what you want.

 - you can merge the rm -f lines into dh_clean call (they do the same thing)

Done.

 - do you need dh_installexamples and dh_install in binary-arch target ?

Moved to the install target.

 - please indent the upstream authors section in debian/copyright by
4 spaces, and expand (or remove) ... and several others.

Done.

 - License section is indeed the copyright one

Sorry - what is your point here?

 - please add the correct license section, referring to apache-2.0,
adding the apache license boilerplate (as visible in
 ./ocrocmd/version.h)

Done.

 - since you claim that your packaging is gplv3, and so are the patches
you wrote, are you sure that those patches can be applied to
apache-2.0 source code? please check. That's the reason we usually
suggest to license the packaging under the same license as upstream
 code.

Done.

 - you completely missed to add information about External Software
 in debian/copyright

What do you mean by this?

 - please check *every* source file: ./ocrocmd/version.h has a
different copyright year, and many others (2006-2008 seems to be the
right years); ./colib/nbest.h (and with it, many other) has different
copyright holder, and you have to list them in the debian/copyright
file; ext/lua/lua.h (and all the related files) has different
copyright holder and license: please add them too and check the
 license is compatible with apache-2.0.
I can continue with many other files: please check the whole
upstream tarball, *every* files, (I exec, from the root level, find .
-type f -exec less {} \;) and report all the copyright and license
information differing from the main ones and whether they are
 compatible each other.

licensecheck -r --copyright * only finds Apache-2 or unknown.

what about creating a ocropus-common package to contain all those
 architecture independent files?

Done.

I've uploaded the package again.

 1) Is is actually needed to do the packaging work on a Debian system, or
would a derivative like Ubuntu also do? I would always test my package
on a real Debian before putting it up for sponsoring or uploading, but
having to do actual development on Debian would mean a parallel
installation of a Debian Desktop. Those of you packaging for both Debian
and Ubuntu, do you switch systems all the time?

I use Ubuntu (Hardy ATM), but the important thing to do before
uploading to -mentors or ftpmaster is to build the package in a sid
chroot.

Having made it into sid, packages get synced into Ubuntu automatically
provided that there are no Ubuntu changes to be merged. Intrepid has
just gone into Debian sync freeze, so if you want your package in
Intrepid, you will have to file a LP bug and give a reason.

How is it possible? The doc/reference/html is deleted just before doing
mkdir. It doesn't happen here to me.
I could put mkdir -p but it's very strange though.

I assume that

rm -rf doc/reference/{html,latex,rtf,xml}

is a bashism, as replacing it with

rm -rf doc/reference/html
rm -rf doc/reference/latex
rm -rf doc/reference/rtf
rm -rf doc/reference/xml

sorts at least that out.

You should build the package in a pbuilder. There is quite a good
explanation[1]. Having set things up, I build the package with

sudo DIST=sid pdebuild

which with the above change now FTBFS with:

/tmp/buildd/syx-0.1.7/missing: line 54: makeinfo: command not found
WARNING: `makeinfo' is missing on your system. You should only need it if
you modified a `.texi' or `.texinfo' file, or any other file
indirectly affecting the aspect of the manual. The spurious
call might also be the consequence of using a buggy `make' (AIX,
DU, IRIX). You might want to install the `Texinfo' package or
the `GNU make' package. Grab either from any GNU archive site.
make[2]: *** [manual/syx.html] Error 1

which probably means that you should add Texinfo to the build-depends.

I updated the -1 package instead of uploading -2 or -3. A developer suggested
 me that.
Should I clean the changelog or should I create new versions?

The first version uploaded to Debian should be -1. The changelog
should contain packaging changes to the previous version, plus any
bugs closed, so the only line necessary should be

  * Initial release (Closes: #457782)

You could try and use LDFLAGS to pass -Wl,--as-needed (linker flags).
But since it could break silently some parts of your build, it shouldn't
be used without -Wl,-z,defs which will help spot possible missing -l$foo
options in intermediate objects (if any). You can pass LDFLAGS to the
  ./configure script.

I uploaded tesseract-ocr 2.03-1 with --as-needed, but have had this
bug reported:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=484052

i.e. the test case in the bug report segfaults if tesseract is
compiled with gcc 4.2 with or with --as-needed. If compiled with gcc
4.3, the test case segfault if --as-needed is used, but not otherwise.

Is this a gcc bug?

If I make tesseract depend on gcc 4.3 (is this a good idea?) and take
out --as-needed, what do I do about warnings like:

dpkg-shlibdeps: warning: debian/tesseract-ocr/usr/bin/tesseract
shouldn't be linked with libz.so.1 (it uses none of its symbols).

?

Other than this test case, tesseract works fine.

It might be interesting to use a debug build, and share the backtraces,
so that one can check whether that's the same bug, when the segfault

Below is the backtrace from tesseract built with gcc-4.2 and
--as-needed. Repeating it without --as-needed seems to produce an
identical backtrace (apart from the addresses, of course). I also
compiled in a sid pbuilder expecting to therefore get gcc 4.3, but
that defaulted to 4.2.4-1. Why didn't I get 4.3? How do I force 4.3 in
the sid pbuilder?

Re: tesseract-ocr: missing-dependency-on-libc

2008-04-30 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
2008/4/29 Cyril Brulebois [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
You could try and use LDFLAGS to pass -Wl,--as-needed (linker flags).
But since it could break silently some parts of your build, it shouldn't
be used without -Wl,-z,defs which will help spot possible missing -l$foo
options in intermediate objects (if any). You can pass LDFLAGS to the
  ./configure script.

That did the trick.

Thanks

tesseract-ocr: missing-dependency-on-libc

2008-04-29 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
I'm preparing a package for the new version of tesseract and I have a
small problem:

[...]
dh_gencontrol
dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${shlibs:Depends}
dpkg-gencontrol: warning: unknown substitution variable ${shlibs:Depends}
dh_md5sums
dh_builddeb
dpkg-deb: building package `tesseract-ocr' in
`../tesseract-ocr_2.03-1_i386.deb'.
dpkg-deb: building package `tesseract-ocr-dev' in
`../tesseract-ocr-dev_2.03-1_i386.deb'.
 dpkg-genchanges
dpkg-genchanges: including full source code in upload
dpkg-buildpackage (debuild emulation): full upload (original source is included)
Now running lintian...
E: tesseract-ocr: missing-dependency-on-libc needed by
./usr/bin/cntraining and 4 others
Finished running lintian.
[...]

I assume that the gencontrol warning is connected to the missing
dependency. I have, though, got ${shlibs:Depends} in Depends, and I
even tried manually adding libc too, all without luck. I have added
dh_makeshlibs and dh_shlibdeps to rules.

Any clues?

I have uploaded what I have done thus far to mentors:

Your upload of the package 'tesseract' to mentors.debian.net was
successful. Sponsors can now download it. The URL of your package is:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/t/tesseract

The respective dsc file can be found at:
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/t/tesseract/tesseract_2.03-1.dsc

Thanks for any help

2008-04-29 Thread Jeffrey Ratcliffe
2008/4/29 Cyril Brulebois [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
and I even tried manually adding libc too, all without luck.

  DON'T DO THAT.

  There are libc6, libc6.1, libc0.1, and libc0.3 around. You don't want to
  hardcode it. Ever.

I figured as much, but wanted to see what I could do to change the error.

I was about to look into it, but your package FTBFSes with gcc 4.3,
  patch attached.

Thanks, applied. I'll forward it upstream.

While writing the patch, I noticed that upon resume (debuild -b -nc),
./configure gets run again, which is kind of unfortunate (although not
that long on a reasonable machine, it's at least inelegant). Oh, and
even during a regular build, there's a configure even after make.

Thanks. I'll sort it out.

You're calling dh_shlibdeps (see what it does to understand the original
error) way too early; it shouldn't be called before dh_install.

Ahhh. Thanks. Now it is lintian clean. But I have the following
warnings. In another package, I fixed similar warning by setting
LDLOADLIBS in rules. I could set LIBS here, except that
/usr/bin/tesseract DOES use libtiff, whereas the others don't.

I could try and patch the Makefiles after configure, but that seems
rather hackish. Is there an elegant way of doing this?

Jeff

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for the new version 0.12-1

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 362648, 363506, 363508, 386270, 455466

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:

It looks as though I missed the libhtml-parser-perl dependency. I've

You would need to remove the debian/tmp/usr/include files or just run
'make' instead of 'make install' and copy the files manually.

I got the package.install file technique working, so have uploaded the
tesseract-ocr and -dev packages to mentors.

Regarding the language packages: what do they need autoconfig files
   (config.guess, config.sub) for?

Ahh! The rules file I took from the previous -data package was putting
them in. Fixed.

IMHO the description of the language packages doesn't sound english
enough (although I'm not an englishman either). Perhaps instead of
tesseract-ocr data for German you could use something along
Data files to make tesseract recognize german images?

I am English, but I am prepared to change it. How about tesseract-ocr

I've changed this for all the language packages and uploaded them again.

I hope that the packages are now good enough to be uploaded.

Thanks for looking at my work

Absolutely right. And it now builds OK.

 That's correct. However I dislike the `install -d' and `cp' calls in
 debian/rules. dh_installdirs and dh_install exist. By using dh_install,
you don't need to create the directories with dh_dirs first.

Are you saying that the upstream Makefile should get the structure
right and one dh_install call should do the rest?

But looking hard at the dh_install manual page I think has solved my
problem. I wouldn't have known to look there.

Thanks for the help

as an example. debuild seems to fall over with

configure: error: cannot find install-sh or install.sh in . ./.. ./../..
make: *** [config.status] Error 1
debuild: fatal error at line 1228:
debian/rules build failed

but it seems to me that writing the appropriate package.install files
should be enough. This doesn't seem to be doing the trick in the
packages (tesseract-ocr and tesseract-ocr-dev) that I am working on.

Is there more to it than just the package.install files, or does my
mistake lie elsewhere?

Jeff

From #434152 I see that the tesseract-ocr* maintainer knows about the
new package. But why the name change? Is this the same software?

The package name is still tesseract-ocr. v1 was English-only, hence
only one data package. v2 is multilingual - and therefore one data
package per language.

Why are the include files packages in /usr/include/tesseract? Sounds

I must admit that I am fairly inexperienced at packaging, and I more
or less used the v1 diff as a template and just made mods to get it
lintian clean. I see your point, though. I assume it is possible
simultaneously to make the -ocr and -ocr-dev packages, just defining
which files go in which package. I thought defining .install files
would do the trick, but I am having no luck. Would you mind giving me
some pointers?

Regarding the language packages: what do they need autoconfig files
 (config.guess, config.sub) for?

Which autoconfig files? I don't see these.

IMHO the description of the language packages doesn't sound english
enough (although I'm not an englishman either). Perhaps instead of
tesseract-ocr data for German you could use something along
Data files to make tesseract recognize german images?

I am English, but I am prepared to change it. How about tesseract-ocr
language files for German text?

Did you run lintian against the .changes file? I downloaded your

 got:

The lintian I had (and on mentors) said it was clean. I thought I had
