I would like to help with Debian and learn more about the dynamics that
contribute to its success as a stable and secure distribution.
You should start by talking to the maintainer and submitting an ITA to
the WNPP[1].

Then you can start working on the package, get it into shape, fix bugs, etc.
Once you have a new version ready you can post a RFS to this list. The
debian-mentors FAQ[2] explains how to do this.

Before even attempting to make a package please read some
documentation[3]. Specially the Debian Policy Manual.

Thanks for offering to help!

Yes. This makes it a configuration file. If you want it to be a

debian/conffiles.
You don't need to add it to debian/conffiles if you use debhelper

Re: How-do-I make a non-native Debian package?

2005-02-14 Thread Lucas Wall

I wrote my own app and it is debianized already, the way
mplayer already is. But I mistakenly made it a native Debian
package when it is really a tarball and/or a debian package.
There will *never* be a diff between debian and upstream
(I wrote it.)
I can use make dist to produce a tarball. Should I make my
Debian scripts operate on this outputted tarball?
Even if you wrote the program its a good idea to keep the debian
packaging scripts separate and don't make a native package. Basicaly you
provide the orig tarball without the debian subdir and put it in the
diff files.

There are several ways of doing this. What I do in these situations is
leave the debian subdir out of the make dist. Then write a script that
makes the following things (aprox):

- make dist
- copy the tar.gz to a temp dir with the appropiate .orig Debian name.
- unpack the tar.gz and copy the debian dir into it.
- let dpkg-buildpackage (or similar) compile and generate the diff file,
etc.

In fact I add an extra step. I don't build the package directly. I first
build a source package and then let pbuilder[1] build the final package
in a chroot.

And as a related question, I don't wish to become a Debian Developer,
but this app is at least as good as some of the things in the archive.
I suppose I need a sponsor. This is a simple GTK app.
What is the protocol for asking, and would anybody be willing to upload
it for me (once we take a good close look at it.)
If you don't wish to maintain the package you should submit a RFP as a
bugreport of the WNPP[2] pseudo package. If you wish to maintain it you
should submit an ITP.

Not all Debian Developers will sponsor your upload if you have no
intention of becoming a DD.

This app has already been on Freshmeat/Sourceforge for a year:
http://freshmeat.net/projects/tupim
(new release 1.5 will be on freshmeat tomorrow)
http://projects.sf.net/pim-tb
(1.5 version already up there)
You should provide more info. Check the debian-mentors FAQ[3].

Hi! I'm still looking for a sponsor for the popfile[1] package I made. A new upstream
version has been release and I have updated the package, so I am trying once again to
get someone's attention on this.

POPFile is an email classification tool with a Naive Bayes classifier, a POP3 proxy
and a web interface.

The package and source can be downloaded from my site[2], or from mentors[3] package
repository.

The package is lintian clean and closes WNPP bug #203349.

Ok... Description fixed. I have some questions about the other two items.

Ah... I updated lintian to testing and notice several errors. I'll fix them. I
used to have one which I was not sure about. Lintian complains that symbolic links
should be relative, but the link is from /usr/share/doc/popfile/manual to
/usr/lib/popfile/manual. Making it relative would make the link more cryptic(?).
Should I still make it relative?

Should I add the closes to the list of changes for the last version of the
package, or can I append it to the Initial Release line? Will the bug tracking
system parse the whole file or just the changes list for the latest version?

 Hello Lucas,

After a quick check, I've found the following problems with your
 package:

 · The package is not lintian clean yet.

 · In debian/changelog, there is no 'closes #203349' to close ITP bug
   #203349.

 · In debian/control, the short description shouldn't start with 'An'
and end with '.', see [1].

I read the Debian Policy and didn't installed documentation in /usr/lib.
What I did was move the html manual out of the main program install dir and place it
in /usr/share/doc, but the web UI links to the manual so I placed a symbolic link.

ln -fs /usr/share/doc/popfile/manual $(DESTDIR)/usr/lib/popfile/manual

Now lintian says the link should be relative. Should I make it relative?

You shouldn't install documentation in /usr/lib in the first
place. Read the Chapter 12 of Debian Policy at:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html

You should have read the Debian Policy document thoroughly.

Should I add the closes to the list of changes for the last version of
the package, or can I append it to the Initial Release line?

Put it in the changes list of the lastest version.

Will the bug tracking system parse the whole file or just the changes
 list for the latest version?

You shouldn't change the log of the previous versions anyway. A 'closes #nn' in
the changes list of a previous version won't be considered.
