  In testing with using the downloads.legdersmb.org site instead of the
github.com/ledgersmb/LedgerSMB site, it was able to both find the new or
current upstream version as well as automatically test the pgp signature
check.  So the next step will be to update it for the ds repack (not just
rename) and see how that works.

  If that were entirely true then where does the, in this case,
downloaded file ledgersmb-1.5.21.tar.gz.asc from? I'd always thought that
resulted from the GitHub pgpsigurlmangle entry[1], which does point to the
'releases'. And if the final URL is pointed to the 'releases' also, it fails
because it can't find the *.asc file as it's looking for the wrong file name
and ends up not downloading anything.  That's why it confused me; the form
of watch I ended up using at least downloaded files but still failed due to
the apparently bad downloaded archive.

debian/watch file for the ledgersmb package

All,  

The upstream for the ledgersmb package [1] moved from Sourceforge to GitHub
including for where new releases of the application are made available; so
the debian/watch file in the package needed to be`updated for the new
locations of the distribution archive and its detached`gpg file that is used
for verification.  Updating the watch file [2] so that uscan can see new
releases was successful but  the *.asc file associated with the new releases
and used for the gpg verification does not seem to get referenced properly so
the verification step fails. (Or the verify is happening after the repack for
some reason but before renaming the archive?  It's not clear...) Since the
verify step is failing, the step for doing the repack of the archive does not
happen. Manually downloading then verifying the archive can be done
successfully although then repacking the upstream archive also has to done
manually.  The download, verify, and repacking was successful at the time
when the watch file was pointing to the old SourceForge site.  

Running, for instance, the command "uscan --force-download --verbose --rename
--destdir .." results in the error "BAD signature".  And indeed, checking
the resulting files from that command  finds that the archive does look to
have been repacked (it's smaller) and so the verify fails.  

The current upstream version in Debian is 1.5.21 but 1.6.3 has been
released;  I'll be working on upgrading the packaging for the new series.  

I'd appreciate if the current version of the debain/watch file be reviewed
and advice given about how it could be updated to work properly.  Besides the
new releases being available at github (via their tags), they are also
available at a separate upstream site [3];  I wonder if it would be better
to try using that?

According to my notes, I was still seeing hardening related errors, after 
changing the debhelper version to 9.  I'll investigate that again.

For a package (multimail) I'm working on adopting, yes.  Also, recently, 
for my postnews package where it was my first upload of it since I became a DM. 
 Not counting my (currently, 10) pkg-perl packages (which do not use the DM 
concept but where I am noted as an uploader) I have three other packages where 
I'm already listed for DM upload rights for the package, plus one other I'll be 
asking for it when I next update the package.

That came out since my multimail package on mentors was put online at the 
mentors site.   The package doesn't have any reverse depends; so no, it doesn't 
really need an explicit "-dbg" package anymore.

  I have resolved the issues you raised then but while a version 0.6 of 
'postnews' was released in September of 2013, I did not have a chance to work 
on updating the packaging of it. (New job at the time, then there was the 
Jessie freeze...)  There has now been a v0.6.1 release which I packaged  and 
which is now available as one of the packages I have at the mentors site, 
where it is available (for instance) as follows:

I happened to be looking at my package overview page[1] just now and

them!).  I had asked a previous sponsor of the package earlier this month 
about doing so, but haven't received any (direct) response to that.  And if it 
was added after someone did sponsor it;  it's not in the new queue as yet, nor 
has this bug been updated about it...

If I otherwise keep not seeing anything about it, I'll go ahead and try 
uploading it myself.  And if that works, will also close this sponsorship 
ticket myself.

That's the option I'm more inclined to, so I'll be working on the
 changes necessary for that.

  I believe I've made progress on that but it's not quite working as expected 
on either jessie or wheezy (which is where the file is needed, since it's for 
apache 2.2), so I'll still be needing to investigate.

had been removed from the Mentors site was the first I knew that it had

   I don't recall if you or any of the other package sponsors have
mentioned; do you (or the Mentors site?) have something automated in
place that checks open RFS bugs against the packages on the Mentors
site?  Or is that a manual check that you do periodically?

   As I noted in my email to the mailing list, your actions were the
first I knew that my hwb package wasn't on the Mentors site any more and
I was wondering how that came to your attention.

   Yes, I know.  But as Raphaël alluded to; because I want to get an
updated version into wheezy, I also wanted to limit the upstream changes
in the package so as to increase the chances that it will be accepted
into wheezy.  I feel (both as the package maintainer and as part of
upstream) that this combination of the packaging and upstream changes
are the necessary next step in increasing the quality of the package in
wheezy without trying to do too much at one time.

initials, not my full middle name...):  I find that I didn't keep a copy
of that run for some reason so I'd need to do it again but IIRC, one
large component of that diff was the change for where the css and
template files get installed by the package.


 In any case, the main justification is the security fixes and the fact
 that it's a leaf package.

   That's what I planned to use, plus noting the number of fixes besides
the security related fix as well as quoting (and referencing) the
upstream announce message where it is advised that all should upgrade to
that version.

   One of things I decided to do as part of adopting the mrtg-ping-probe
package was to rewrite debian/copyright for DEP-5. The first thing I
noticed when I was doing that is that while the original
debian/copyright was for GPL-2+ for all files, the actual source
COPYRIGHT file looks to be GPL-2 not GPL-2+.

   In the new version of d/copyright; I've kept GPL-2+ for the debian
directory files but listed Files: * as just GPL-2.  Both with a line
pointing to the GPL-2 file in common licenses.  Does that seem the way
to go?

   Note also that Lintian now complains about the FSF address in the
first license entry, presumably because I copied it from the original
source COPYRIGHT file.

 is licensed as GPL version 2 or any later value, while the COPYRIGHT
 file is just the GPL v2 license.

 the description is determined by your binary package.

   This particular package is left over from the import from the old
site.  Perhaps the binary package didn't get imported along with the
source package?


  Thus, if you want
 to change it, re-upload the package with a new description.

   Oh, I plan to but I'm not sure when I'll have a new one completed.  I
also have a new 4K bit key, which I need to get uploaded to the site
first.

First, I've attached a series of patches to the ttylog upstream:


 Thank you very much for attaching actual patches!   They'll  
make it a _lot_ easier to evaluate what you're commenting on.



- if the user has set the standard CPPFLAGS, CFLAGS or LDFLAGS  
variables

  in the environment, use them instead of -g -O2


   I'll evaluate that for inclusion with the next version of ttylog,  
v0.2.0.



- if the user runs ttylog with invalid arguments, exit with a  
status of
  1, not 0 (not really necessary, just, I don't know, good  
practice? :)


Planned for the next version, v0.2.0.



- a bit stricter checking of command-line arguments:
  - do not try to retrieve the -1st element of an array if there is no
baud-rate option on the command line


   I'll evaluate that for inclusion with the next version of ttylog,  
v0.2.0.




  - check for buffer overflow attempts through a looong modem name :)


   An aspect of the existing Debian bug # 553945 and as already  
noted, planned for the next version (v0.2.0).




- check for errors in tcgetattr(), tcsetattr(), select(), etc.
- fix some compiler warnings if stricter warning options are passed to
  the compiler
- check for some more errors so as to be able to build a hardened
  executable


Those I'll investigate for inclusion in the next version, v0.2.0.



And then, there are a couple of ideas for the Debian packaging itself:
- switch directly to the 3.0 (quilt) source format - unless, of  
course,

  you have a reason to stick to 1.0?


Not so much that I had a reason to stick to it for this release,  
as that I had no particular reason to change to it at this time.   I  
am  considering it for the packaging for v0.2.0, since that is when I  
am planning major changes  for both ttylog itself as well as to its  
packaging.





- bump the debhelper compatibility level to 7 and let dh_clean and
  dh_installchangelogs do their job (they can guess what files to  
remove

  or install by themselves now :)

- make even better use of debhelper 7 - since your Debian packaging is
  very simple, the rules file may be brought down to only a couple of
  lines by using the dh(1) helper tool


   To be considered for the packaging of the next major ttylog  
version, v0.2.0.  Did not want to make too many issues just yet for,  
for instance, backporting.




- use the dpkg-buildflags program introduced in dpkg-dev 1.15.7 to
  obtain the default values for CPPFLAGS, CFLAGS and LDFLAGS; besides
  other things, this takes care of e.g. noopt being specified in the
  DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS variable
  - note that this patch adds the debian/patches/01-flags.patch to the
upstream Makefile, which is actually the first patch in the
upstream series above; this might not be necessary if you like
this change and accept it upstream :)

- build with the -Werror compiler flag if the user requests it by

ubuntu-keyring_2010.+09.30.dsc
2) Used debuild to build the package locally.  Used debsign on the  
resulting files.
3) Installed that package where I needed it, including to my local  
package repository.

What I've been using is the examples info in the man page;   
i.e.,  create an archive, create a tag, then do a 'pristine-tar  
commit' to that archive and that tag.   Seems to work well enough,

 One thing I've found is if you are also upstream for the  
package, and you want to use git-buildpackage, you need to do the  
'pristine-tar commit'  for both the distribution archive and the  
debian 'orig' archive. It's easy enough to do (just rename the  
distribution archive to the debian 'orig' format  do the commit on  
that) , but is an extra step.   (If there is an easier/better way to  
do that, I'd be interested in hearing about it...)

True;  except that /usr/bin is more likely to be in the $PATH  
than /usr/lib/ifmail...(Unless a particular user account is used  
specifically for the ifcico  similar programs, in which case the  
$PATH could be adjusted for that ...)




(as long as anything needing the executable from ifcico has
that path hard-coded or pre-empting /usr/bin as necessary).


When I use programs in scripts, I usually include the path for  
whatever executables I'm using.   Don't normally do that when I use a  
program from the command line...





The
manpage for the former is in section 1 and the manpage for the
latter would go in section 8 if consistent with the manpages for the
other stuff in /usr/lib/ifmail, so again no conflict (though users
with both installed will need to specify 'man 8 ifstat' to see the
one from ifcico).

Package removals: when are Documents removed:?

When are 'documents' removed during the removal or purge of a  
package?   I am working on re-packaging Fidogate (dropped from Debian  
after sarge)  the following errors come up during  a package removal  
or purge in a test install (under Etch):


Removing fidogate ...
Document `fidogate' is not installed, cannot remove.
Document `fidogate-readme' is not installed, cannot remove.

What does the not installed indicate?   Both document sets  
have their definitions in /usr/share/doc-base,  the files referenced  
there are present in the install...
