Need advice about my first package

Hi mentors,
Is it possible to have an advice about my first package without submit a
RFS ?
Yes i would like to have an advice about my job and correct all what is
wrong. I think that the RFS procedure is too strict or legal for me
(at this moment according to my knowledge about Debian) and i would like
to have a mam to man discuss about... Is it possible ?

Best regards.

you can submit a RFC (request for comments).

Well, there's nothing legal about RFS, only that it's usually done
once you feel your package is ready for upload, and it doesn't apply
here (it seems).

Of course, if you have inserted a url to .dsc, you would have received
a first check already :)

As a general rule, don't ask to ask, just ask :) For a faster (not
always) reply, you can join #debian-mentors IRC channel on OFTC
network.

Kindly,
Sandro

IIRC that's where a RFC is for? But I have the impression that you could
just file a RFS and say that it is your first package. There are
friendly people over here. RFSs are usually iterative processes.

man-to-man discussion can easily be done on IRC #debian-mentors at
irc.debian.org. Be sure to upload your package somewhere before,
preferably at mentors.debian.net (you could mark that No, I don't need
a sponsor).

Don't ask whether you can ask! Just ask.

In other words, ask your question about Debian packaging. What is the
worst that can happen?

Need advice about my first package

2008-09-20 Thread Fabian Pucciarelli
Hi,
I have never built a package in my life, I'm trying to build a package
called dcc (anti spam software
http://www.rhyolite.com/dcc/INSTALL.html#envtbl). Does anyone know of a
guide that I can use, the new maintainers guide uses a simple example, I'm
looking for a more complex one, so I can try to figure out what to do. I'm
basically looking for some advice on how to start and what to look for.

thanks,
fabian

dcc used to be in Debian, but was removed:

http://packages.qa.debian.org/d/dcc.html
http://bugs.debian.org/464161
http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/01/msg00172.html

You could start by using the old packaging. The last version uploaded
to Debian is available here:

http://snapshot.debian.net/package/dcc

dcc used to be in Debian, but was removed:

because of a bad security history and because future versions became
non-free [1].
Did the situation get better? I just ask, because probably its not
worth the effort...

That would be a good project to learn Debian packaging from. I have a
home built version of Woody/Sarge dcc which I recently updated to 1.3.92
and rebuilt for Etch. As I recall the only significant change needed
was to update the copyright to reflect non-free upstream copyright.
I use it very successfully with Debian SpamAssassin.

You could update the packaging to Lenny standards and check if it complies
with Policy 3.8.0 (the previous version was at least three years ago).
