Bug#968021: RFS: dfu-programmer/0.7.2-1 -- device firmware update (DFU) based USB programmer for Atmel chips

2020-09-19 Thread Tobias Frost
Package: sponsorship-requests
Followup-For: Bug #968021
Control: tags -1 moreinfo

Hi Rodolphe,

I've took a look at your package, here are some remarks that needs to be
addressed before uploading:

- There is a bug on the BTS asking for the new upstream version. Please
  close it using d/changelog.
- Why you bump compat level only to 10?
  - the changelog should have more details on this. The "why" is not visible
when
looking at the changes to the packaging.
- Not all changes are recorded in d/changelog, e.g the change of the Homepage
field.
- The change to the VCS fields also needs to close the Bug filed on this issue.
- Did you use the policy upgrade checklist when updating S-V?
I miss at least one change that should have been done…

- d/copyright needs updating, at least the debian/* part.

- d/patches are missing some fields in the dep3 format. Have the patches been
  sent upstream?

Wishlist: (no blockers for upload)
- I don't like private repos on salsa very much. Please consider moving
it to the Debian namespace for collaborative maintaince.

As always, please check those items, update your pacakges and then
remove the moreinfo tag to signal that you're ready for the next round
of reviewing!

Many thanks for your contributions to Debian!

As I forgot to send my ITA after the current maintainer orphaned the

agree to
let me maintain dfu-programmer. Should I sent a new ITA before or the
bug will be closed with the upload ?

one of the less cool features of Alioth is, you won't get any
confirmation mail once someone approved (or rejected) your request to
join a project.

I don't know your user name, but check whether you are listed as

Here are a few comments about your package:

 * Please consider using a more recent debhelper compatibility level.
Version 5 is quite outdated (although still okish). Generally I suggest
 to bump debian/compat to 8 and depend in debian/control on a 8.0
version. That works down to Lenny with backports, although your package
probably won't ever enter Stable or even Oldstable anyway.

Oops, I forget this file in my updating process :) It's corrected.

 * You use a VCS not hosted by Debian. That's ok and legit, but Alioth is
nice too, and eases life to other people, potentially interested to help
you with the package. Regardless of the repository you choose, the
VCS-Browser link should point to the trunk of your repository, not to
 the project home page [1]

I've changed the VCS field to point to anonscm.debian.org git
repository. I'm waiting to be add to collab-maint project on alioth to
push my repo.

 * If I understand the purpose of your program, the section devel is not
really appropriate - maybe electronics [2] fits better.

Yes. Done.

 * Upstream's NEWS file you install as doc, is in fact a changelog. For
archive-wide consistency you might consider installing it as upstream
changelog through dh_installchangelogs(1). Figure, that would also make
 Lintian pedantically happy!

Done.

 * Please remove unneeded comments in debian/rules. Those are for your
information, and not intended to be kept.

Done.

Good work, your package looks good. As you might have noticed, my
 comments are minor pedantic notes.

Thanks. I should work on more complicated package now.

The two former will help you get the attention of reviewers (and

Even if most of this information is readily available through various

Thanks for your comments.

Dfu-programmer is a tool to flash atmel chips.

For answer the question for nmu, I've contacted Andrew to see if he still

Unfortunatly, he doesn't enough time to do it so he orphaned it.

I think there is a little mis-understanding here, probably because I'm not a
native English speaker ;-)

I have bought a tux-droid¹ and one of the first things I had to do was
to update the USB-dongle firmware². And for updating the firmware,
dfu-programmer is needed³. So, from my point of view, it would be great
that dfu-programmer would be available in Debian.

Note that I have no connection with the tux-droid project, except that I
have bought a tux-droid and that I'm subscribed to there mailinglist.

 an Error

Almost correct. an is used if there is a vowel-*sound*.
Since U is pronounce alone here (it's an abbreviation, not a word),
U is pronounced [ju:].

So it's an understanding, but a USB connector.

Usually true, but:

 an USB connector

That just sounds wrong, as a native speaker. Acronyms tend to be
variable. In normal, natural, usage, it is 'a USB key' - yet it would
also be natural to say 'an ATI drive', 'a SCSI drive', 'an iBook' or
'an iPAQ'.

 an Inode
 an Error

Correct.

Well, that's certainly what they taught me at school, too. :) But it's
just not what I hear or read living in the US for ~30 years... So I
looked a little further:

Basically, one says an before a _phonemic_ vowel -- in other words,
only a vowel that starts with a vowel-like sound. Specifically, this
page http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/esl/esliart.html mentions
that u often does not require an an, namely when it sounds like y
in you. A found a few other references to this on the web, and it
appears entirely reasonable and agrees with my personal experience as a
native English speaker, so I believe it.

 It builds these binary packages:

 The package is lintian clean.

  How did you check this?

A few notes:
- dfu-programmer (0.4.0-1) sid; urgency=low in changelog,
see section 5.5 of the developer reference please
- your package is not closing an ITP bug
- where is your compat file?
  - Why you are not using debhelper scripts? (I know this
  is not needed anyway)
- copyright file is broken see

I am interested in this package, and would like to subscribe to your
newsletter.

I don't see any major showstoppers besides the sid distribution and
the copyright file that Nico already mentioned. The diff is a bit large
due to rerunning autoconf, is that really necessary (there is no need to
remove the spec file, as long as it is not installed, which seemed like
the only change to the build system)?

The description should probably read ...an USB... and would ideally
have a few paragraph breaks. Not using debhelper is fine with me.
