I'd like to ask you to explain a bit more about your motivation to move from
/var/run to /var/tmp. Of course /tmp can be used for sockets, but according
to [1] I'd say /var/tmp/ is not the right choice.

To me the old path looked much better: (see resources/getIPSecInfo.lib.tpl)
-exec 3/var/run/pluto/ipsec.info
+exec 3/var/tmp/L2tpIPsecVpn/defaultgateway.info

Even more I'd say your call to:
L2tpIPsecVpn deleteAllConfFiles || true
does absolutely not belong into the remove target, but into purge of postrm.

Further, as you've bumped to Standards-Version 3.9.3 you may also look into
bumping debian/copyright to the new official 1.0 Format.

Your debian/watch doesn't check out too btw..

This is a rather cosmetic change that IMHO doesn't need a new upload. If
there is no fix other than this that needs to be put into Debian right
now I'd prefer to wait for a couple of days/weeks and see if there
aren't any substantial changes for the next upload to be included too.
If then again nothing else pops up we can do a new sourceful upload with
just this change.

You can remove the boilerplate from the postinst.

You shouldn't need to override dh_installchangelogs in debhelper compat 8.

 Good work! ;-)

Just wondering whether the Depends on openswan and xl2tpd shouldn't rather
be put into the l2tp-ipsec-vpn-daemon package instead of just into the
gui package.

Regarding the dh_installchangelogs override - that one shouldn't be
necessary with debhelper compat at 7 and greater. It's not wrong to put it
 though. ;-)

the postinst, postrm, prerm aren't used. You may want to delete them.

 debian/rules reads:
 make -f nbproject/qt-Release.mk
 dist/Release/GNU-Linux-x86/L2tpIPsecVpnControlDaemon
 -(snip)-

Why hard code the arch here? Will this be a problem on any Debian arch
 including the kFreeBSD ones?

As I already said for the GUI - the construction with the extra
nbproject looks a bit weird as you are both upstream and Debian
maintainer. I'm not sure you aren't overcomplicating the debian/rules
 file.

Regarding the test target in debian/rules you've put it for the daemon
and for the GUI yet both times without content. Any reason to add this
line here? Are you planning on adding tests (which would be great) but
they aren't ready despite your 1.0.0 version number?

 I'm not too sure whether
 /usr/lib/l2tp-ipsec-vpn-daemon/L2tpIPsecVpnControlDaemon is the best
path to put your deamon. I'd see /usr/sbin somewhat more appropriate.

Other than that good to go IMHO.

installable withtout l2tp-ipsec-vpn-daemon. How far is your ITP w.r.t.
 actually producing a package?

If you find the l2tp-ipsec-vpn-daemon package to be o.k. I'd be happy if
some one could put both packages into NEW.

the postinst, postrm, prerm aren't used. You may want to delete them.

debian/rules reads:
make -f nbproject/qt-Release.mk
dist/Release/GNU-Linux-x86/L2tpIPsecVpnControlDaemon
-(snip)-

Why hard code the arch here? Will this be a problem on any Debian arch
including the kFreeBSD ones?

As I already said for the GUI - the construction with the extra
nbproject looks a bit weird as you are both upstream and Debian
maintainer. I'm not sure you aren't overcomplicating the debian/rules
file.

Regarding the test target in debian/rules you've put it for the daemon
and for the GUI yet both times without content. Any reason to add this
line here? Are you planning on adding tests (which would be great) but
they aren't ready despite your 1.0.0 version number?

I'm not too sure whether
/usr/lib/l2tp-ipsec-vpn-daemon/L2tpIPsecVpnControlDaemon is the best
path to put your deamon. I'd see /usr/sbin somewhat more appropriate.

Other than that good to go IMHO.

Hi Michael,

thank you so much for this review.

I addressed and solved all the issues and uploaded the changes to
mentors.debian.net.

BTW I'm still looking for a sponsor to upload this package.

I've taken another look at your package. For reference, I've used

 dated 29-Jul-2011 09:46.

The first thing I stumbled upon was the orig.tar.gz that doesn't match the
upstream one. Not only do md5sums differ, but the actual contents does:

 (... diffstat output)
 125 files changed, 116 insertions(+), 404 deletions(-)

Although these changes only concern revision control ids, it is IMHO not
acceptable to have orig.tar.gz differ in such a way from upstream's tar.gz.

 Further comments:

 - The description is clearly improved and the first stanza is appropriate;
others, however, should probably only go in some README file. Please see
Debian Policy about this, Section 3.4, which provides a very nice guideline
   what should (not) be included.
 - debian/postinst:
   * service rsyslog restart || true -- no, there is no service command in
general in Debian. And why restart a foreign service!?
   * Why use gksu when su should do the trick? I really wouldn't want
to do system administration remotely with GUI su popping up.
 - The package build-depends on (and indeed appears to require) libopensc2-dev,
which unfortunately is no longer available in Debian. Could you find a way
around that, given that you are upstream? Otherwise please speak to the
 opensc
   maintainer in Debian about this.

Thanks a lot for your work,

 /etc/xdg/autostart/L2tpIPsecVpn.desktop is also problematic (or
even more). /etc isn't considered a package's domain, but of the
site administrator. You shall not alter any files there without
explicit permission of the administrator. This includes deletion of
files, see §10.7.3 [2][3]. Here I advocate again to let dpkg handle
treatment of this file. Ultimately its the user's choice whether he
wants to keep this file or purge the package. * In debian/rules
please don't set DH_VERBOSE on release packages. Its fine to do for
your debugging purposes, but comment it out on packages you want to

RFS: l2tp-ipsec-vpn

2011-06-18 Thread Werner Jaeger
Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package l2tp-ipsec-vpn.

* Package name: l2tp-ipsec-vpn
  Version : 0.9.9-1
Upstream Author : Werner Jaeger werner_jae...@web.de
* URL : https://launchpad.net/l2tp-ipsec-vpn
* License : GPL v3
  Section : net

It builds these binary packages:
l2tp-ipsec-vpn - control your L2TP IPsec VPN connections

The package appears to be lintian clean.

The upload would fix these bugs: 602504

My motivation for maintaining this package is: In the first place, I develop
this package for
my own use because there was no easy to use solution to connect to a Microsoft
l2tp ipsec vpn
using a certificate for PPP authentication, which I needed to connect to my
corporate network.

I made it public through my ppa at https://launchpad.net/~werner-jaeger to
share the solution.

Apparently many other people had the same problem and started using it.

This is not my first request but so far I did not get any response. Is there
anything else I
should be doing ?

The package can be found on mentors.debian.net:
- URL: http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/l2tp-ipsec-vpn
- Source repository: deb-src http://mentors.debian.net/debian unstable main
contrib non-free
- dget
http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/l/l2tp-ipsec-vpn/l2tp-ipsec-vpn_0.9.9-1.dsc

I would be glad if someone uploaded this package for me.

Kind regards
 Werner Jäger
