I respectfully disagree.

If we take that path, then we might as well allow usb-modeswitch to download
its latest modeswitching strategies for the 3G dongles that need one. Oh
and usb-modeswitch could then also update its binary too as anyone wants
the latest anyway.

Having that type of data packaged and uploaded to our archive puts trust on
its contents. You don't get any close to that level of trust with programs
that download random stuff from the Internet for their uptodatedness;
especially when the random stuff is critical for the Internet access (as
mobile-broadband-provider-info can be).

In fact, I would be suprised if our Stable Release Managers were to refuse
updates of such data packages.

OdyX

Let's not forget, packages like this need to work when you are offline,
and your only connectivity is 3G. They need to be usable from an install
from a stack of Debian DVDs.

Yes the package does have a git handle:

Cool. I don't know the process for getting a package qualified to be
considered under the squeeze-updates policy, but that sounds like what
you (and/or the DD who sponsors your uploads of this package) want to
look into, at least down the road.

As for if there should be a watch file, or what the watch file should

Yes the package does have a git handle:

 http://git.gnome.org/browse/mobile-broadband-provider-info/

but there is nothing as such as a static tarball on the site. Need
 more clarity on this.

Well, I'm not involved in packaging for Debian at all, just standing
on the sidelines, so I could be All Wrong about the following. But...

I have the impression that the watch files being talked about
elsewhere in this discussion _typically_ refer to a distinct file or
files of some sort, which can be obtained via anonymous ftp / http /
etc, and which have a distinct version of some sort, be it something
embedded in the file name, or a file time stamp, or whatever. And,
watching that file, changes to its file name, changes to its time
stamp, etc is what's used to determine if a Debian package is
up-to-date in terms of its version with respect to the version of
the original source the Debian package is derived from.

If what you are packaging here does not have a distinct file of some
sort that can be used to determine the version of the original source,
but a worthwhile version of some sort can be derived from the source
version's Git handle, and if that Git handle can be used by the Debian
watch file mechanisms to automatically determine when the Debian
package's version is out of date with respect to the original source
file, then it seems to me that this is what should be done. Now, _if_
one can do this, and if how _how_ one does this, I do not know. But,
that seems to be the question that needs to be answered.

Thanks for your time. Hope this is of some use, interest.

Joseph

Once your hardware is working, there is no need to periodically update

That said, mobile-broadband-provider-info sounds like a good candidate

Howdy, folks,

I've noticed (I've not dug in to find out if it's a function of my

have reviewed) that all the files are marked +x.

You should consider wrapping the Uploaders field.

You should also consider removing the watch file - it's an Info tag
when it's missing, not a warning or error. Uscan exits with a nonzero
return value when you run it, which I don't think is right. A DD might

Looks ok for a freeze exception.  Please let -release know when the
package is accepted in the archive.

Please fix the following issues and I will upload it:

Please close the relevant Launchpad bugs in the changelog using (LP:
#1234) so that once Ubuntu syncs the package, the relevant bugs will
be automatically closed. You can find the relevant Launchpad bugs in
the upstream git log.

You also added a love poem in 'debian/new file', I would suggest that
is not useful in a source package and should be removed, cute though
it is :)

The following issues are not blockers for this upload:

Since upstream uses autotools, you can use 'make distcheck' to create
the tarball in debian/rules get-orig-source. Then let upstream know if
that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for
Debian. The default upstream tarball format seems to be .tar.bz2 so
you will need to add a bunzip2 ...tar.bz2 | gzip -9 ...tar.gz to
the process at least until post-squeeze when you could switch to
dpkg-source v3 (IIRC the release team prefers not to unblock
dpkg-source format version changes).

I just noticed that the version number is incorrect since upstream
hasn't bumped the version in configure.ac, please talk to upstream
about that. Probably the version number needs to be autogenerated
based on the date of the latest git commit when the tarball is
generated with make distcheck.

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
version of CC-PD.

Hi,

Freeze exception was granted for that version only. You should not
upload new version (unless it fix bugs = important severity) /new

Thanks kartik for the explanation :)

Here is the main motivation for the updated package:

I uploaded a new version because it supports new networks fixing bugs
back in ubuntu here is the upstream changes log

http://git.gnome.org/browse/mobile-broadband-provider-info/log/

and as you can see most of them are LP bug fixes :)

also from my previous mail quote

from the README file:

The Package contains only informational files so it's
safe for distributions to grab updates even during feature freeze and
maintenance stages.

So its safe I guess to update the package :)

henceforth I am attaching the diff from the present version in

I've removed that line and uploaded your package. Please close the

Some things you might want to look at (some mentioned previously):

Since upstream uses autotools, you can use 'make distcheck' to create
the tarball in debian/rules get-orig-source. Then let upstream know if
that fails or produces a different tarball than what you need for
Debian.

The 39 Ubuntu bugs, see if they apply to Debian/upstream and send
patches as appropriate. At least two of those bugs contains a patch so
it would be great if you could do this. At least one of them is fixed
upstream and probably fixed in Debian already, you could close that
one in launchpad. BTW, for future reference, if you put (LP: #1234) in
debian/changelog then the appropriate launchpad bug will be closed

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now

 Uploaded.

I was curious to see if I could find any issues since Kartik had no
comment on the upload at all.

Here is what I found (mostly minor stuff):

There is a typo in the package description: s/thier/their/

The package description has rather awkward grammar, please ask for
help to improve it on debian-l10n-english.

The upstream target in debian/rules should be named get-orig-source:

http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
version of CC-PD.

The package is yet to be debtagged:

http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/edit.html?pkg=mobile-broadband-provider-info

There are a ton of bugs filed on this package in Ubuntu and a couple
in Fedora. Presumably these are also present in the Debian package so
you may want to triage them, forward upstream, etc:

I was curious to see if I could find any issues since Kartik had no
comment on the upload at all.

Here is what I found (mostly minor stuff):

There is a typo in the package description: s/thier/their/

The package description has rather awkward grammar, please ask for
help to improve it on debian-l10n-english.

The upstream target in debian/rules should be named get-orig-source:

 http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-source.html#s-debianrules

I ll correct this in the next upload thanks

The upstream source still contains references to SVN, but it is now
maintained in git, you might want to poke them about that.

Upstream might want to look at CC0, which is a more internationalised
 version of CC-PD.

I will poke the upstream maintainer on it

The package is yet to be debtagged:

 http://debtags.alioth.debian.org/edit.html?pkg=mobile-broadband-provider-info

 Will do it now...

There are a ton of bugs filed on this package in Ubuntu and a couple
in Fedora. Presumably these are also present in the Debian package so
you may want to triage them, forward upstream, etc:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mobile-broadband-provider-info

 https://admin.fedoraproject.org/pkgdb/acls/bugs/mobile-broadband-provider-info

Since I was busy in academics stuff I looked at some of the bugs in
ubuntu and diverted them upstream.. From now on I ll keep a close watch on
bug trackers

Regards

Isn't the watch file also useful for keeping track of the packages
using the Debian External Health System - http://qa.debian.org/ ?
I personally find it very, very useful for the packages I maintain -
keeping my developer QA page always open in a browser tab and taking

Yes peter I do agree but this package is maintained in a git clone
repository and not a upstream website and the rules file already has the
upstream target based on git clone repo..

Here is the modified package based on your long description comment
