Bug#675910: RFS: grr.app/0.9.0-1

2012-06-04 Thread Yavor Doganov
Package: sponsorship-requests
Severity: normal

Dear mentors,

I am looking for a sponsor for my package grr.app.
This upload would fix #633544.

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/g/grr.app/grr.app_0.9.0-1.dsc

Changes:

grr.app (0.9.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
+ Builds with ld --as-needed (Closes: #633544).
  * debian/control (Build-Depends): Remove quilt.  Add librsskit-dev (=
0.3-2) and dpkg-dev (= 1.16.1~) (for hardening support).
(Homepage): Update, new upstream.
(Vcs-Arch, Vcs-Gir, Vcs-Browser): Switch from Arch to Git.
(rssreader.app): Remove package.
(Conflicts, Replaces): Remove.
(Standards-Version): Bump to 3.9.3; no changes needed.
  * debian/source/format: Switch to 3.0 (quilt).
  * debian/README.source: Delete; redundant.
  * debian/patches/link-libs.patch: Delete, not relevant anymore.
  * debian/patches/series: Update.
  * debian/rules: Don't include /usr/share/quilt/quilt.make, eliminate
patch/unpatch dependencies. Enable hardening. Convert and install
the new application icon.
(LDFLAGS): Omit -Wl,-z,defs as the new plugins require methods defined
in the app itself.
(install): Don't handle RSSKit, it's in a separate package now. Don't
install /usr/lib/grr.app.
(binary-arch): Remove GS_USE_FHS conditional. Move only the images to
/usr/share as Resources contains arch-dependent plugins.
  * debian/preinst: New file.
  * debian/Grr.desktop: Amend Icon.
  * debian/watch: Watch the new upstream location.
  * debian/copyright: Upgrade to GPLv3+, remove information about RSSKit.
Add more copyright holders.

Bug#668505: RFS: gemrb/0.7.0-5 [ITP] -- Open-source engine for Black Isle Studio's RPGs

2012-06-04 Thread Beren Minor
Hi,

Trying again, since I've got no answer to the last e-mail I sent on
the Games Team list.
I've uploaded a new version of the GemRB package to mentors.debian.net
and I'm still looking for a sponsorship.

You'll find all the details here, and on the bug #668505:

http://mentors.debian.net/package/gemrb

Alternatively, one can download the package with dget using this command:

  dget -x http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/g/gemrb/gemrb_0.7.0-5.dsc

Since the last time, I've fixed some compilations errors that have
appeared in sid, added fortify compilation flags support and some new
icons I made for each game.

Best regards,

dh = 9 builds strange debug-pkg

2012-06-04 Thread Björn Esser
Hello!

Why does dh = 9 (in paticular the latest version in sid) put the
debugging-symbols in
usr/lib/debug/.build-id/$(2-Byte-Random)/$(Random).debug when building
a lib with multi-arch-support?

The package uses straight debhelper. No tweaks in debian/rules, but
some usual override_*-indep and of course

override_dh_strip:
dh_strip --dbg-package=libsomewhat-dbg

added.

Best Regards,
  Björn

I've used a similar command to update padre package (or was it pan?).

Since this command starts from fuzzy data, you get fuzzy results which need to
be edited manually.

But it does a decent job of grouping files with identical license and
copyright statements. That may save quite some time when dealing with large
package.

Because it uses NT_GNU_BUILD_ID field to identify the binary, not the
binary name. It's documented in debhelper(7) under v9 changes.

See #642158, for an explanation. The short story is, it's easier to
support build-id (from a gdb PoV) than N+1 multi-arched paths.

It should not cause any issues.

Back to the topic, I don't mind either way since I mostly ignore

  I had similar problems that I solved using xvfb, that provides a

  Let's just hope the results of the build are not X11-server-dependent !

  Hope this helps,

Bug#672185: RFS: gnome-session-shutdown/1.81-1 [ITP] -- Shutdown command for GNOME

2012-06-04 Thread Jakub Wilk

(I don't intend to sponsor this package.)

* Jacopo Lorenzetti jaco...@cyan.xubiq.com, 2012-05-09, 02:13:

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/g/gnome-session-shutdown/gnome-session-shutdown_1.81-1.dsc

I'd use = instead of := in debian/rules, so that the variable is not
uselessly evaluated even when it's not used. (And it won't be used most
of the time.)

The definition of DEBIAN_DIR could be simplified to:

$(dir $(firstword ${MAKEFILE_LIST}))

That said, I wouldn't bother with implementing get-orig-source target
when pristine upstream tarballs is being used.

What is build-dependency on docbook2x for?

I see some bugs and weirdnesses in upstream code:

Line 46:

import string

string module is so 90s! ;) Most of functions from that module
(including the ones you use) are deprecated.

Line 52:

# If running outside X try connecting to main display
try:
display = os.environ['DISPLAY']
except KeyError:
os.environ['DISPLAY'] = ':0.0'

This is weird. I haven't seen any program behaving that way. It's user
responsibility to set DISPLAY correctly, and I wouldn't want any program
to second-guess me on that matter.

Line 233:

wall.communicate(message)[0]

This looks a bit odd. Was the expression supposed to be assigned to
something? If not, the [0] part is redundant.

Line 287:

pidf.close

This is no-op. I guess it should be: pidf.close().

Line 288:

except:
return False

Catching all exceptions is almost always wrong (unless you re-raise them
later), for two reasons:

- you don't want to catch things like KeyboardInterrupt;
- you don't want to inadvertently ignore an exception that was raised
because of a bug in your program.

Please catch only exceptions you actually expect to be raised during
normal program execution.

Line 304:

if e.errno != errno.EEXIST:

You didn't import the errno module.

Lines 313-131: similar problems like in 287-288.

Line 349:

gettext.install('gnome-session-shutdown', LOCALE_DIR, unicode=1)

AFAIK if you can omit the LOCALE_DIR part, Python will do the right
thing. No need to hard-code path to locale directory.

Line 360:

for fname in os.listdir('/proc'):
if fname.isdigit():
if int(fname) = 1000:

This looks very dubious to me. Why = 1000?

Running pygettext on the source file results in:

$ pygettext gnome-session-shutdown
*** gnome-session-shutdown:131: Seen unexpected token +
*** gnome-session-shutdown:375: Seen unexpected token +
*** gnome-session-shutdown:397: Seen unexpected token +
*** gnome-session-shutdown:429: Seen unexpected token +

Hi Bas,

I suggested earlier to have another look at the list of architectures for these
reasons :

It would be nice to have 3.6.2-7 and 3.6.2-8 combined into only 3.6.2-7, but
it's not really an error.

It is good to see that hurd-i386 is back. I guess you don't have a solution
for the other removed architectures yet.

I see that debian/patches/ptop_hurd contains machine/m_gnu.c and that file
contains this:

 * AUTHOR: Richard Henderson r...@tamu.edu
 * Order support added by Alexey Klimkin k...@klon.tme.mcst.ru
 * Ported to 2.4 by William LeFebvre

But I don't find any Henderson in debian/copyright. I also don't see any
license for machine/m_gnu.c. Maybe Barry deFreese knows more, since he is
mentioned in the patch as the author of the patch.

Regards,

Bart Martens

  I just tested with a clean user: the current kde-config-gtk-style creates

 Done.

Sorry, but no. I just tested and it doesn't work.

With the attached .gtkrc-2.0-kde as created by the current src:kcm-gtk, when
entering the dialog of src:kde-gtk-config, the dialogs don't show Raleigh
nor DejaVu Sans 9, but oxygen-gtk and Bitstream Charter 12 (and Emacs
for the GTK3 theme). That's not what I'd call any changes there are kept

I'll upload this package [0] when user changes setup by kde-config-gtk-style
2:0.5.3-1 are kept and converted (if needed) by kde-config-gtk-style 3:2.0-1.

 oh, no, this has been my first time looking at that package.

I did not checked your name carefully... I just got confused by the

 The right url is:
 http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/s/shotdetect/shotdetect_1.0.86-1.dsc

 Is there a reason to use debhelper 7?

Not that I am aware, just some old files being copied.

 The pedantic info from lintian
 goes away with something like: debhelper (=9),(of course you need
 to change debian/compat as well).
 If you use 'dh' in the rules file, dh9 should automatically take care of
 the hardening-stuff (this is a release goal for wheezy). I am sure that
 there is also a way for cdbs.

I just uploaded a new version of the package which depends on debhelper
= 9; lintian seems not to report the warnings you pointed out anymore.
and the software is still working.

 So if you don't have a sponsor yet and let those complaints from lintian
 disappear, I will upload the package.

I do not have a sponsor yet, so you are welcome!

Bests,
Giulio.

I literally just copied m_linux.c to m_gnu.c so that's why that AUTHOR line is
there.  Probably
should be removed, I was just being lazy. You should be able to do a very
similar/easy thing for
kfreebsd and other archs.

Thanks,

Barry deFreese

GPL and OpenSSL

2012-06-04 Thread José Luis Segura Lucas
I'm starting the packaging work for grive [1].

When I finished the first aproach to the Debian package, I run lintian
to see the possible errors, and between a big set of warning, I found
the next error:

possible-/gpl/-code-linked-with-openssl

I speak with upstream authors and they tell me that they know the
problem between OpenSSL and GPL, but for now they keep using OpenSSL
because they only uses the MD5 sum function.

Is this md5 function compatible with GPL license? If it isn't, are there
any other implementation compatible with GPL2?

Best regards y thanks in advance for your help :-)

It could be replaced via Debain patch.
AFAIK something similar is done for Apache (or APR?)

No it is not. The OpenSSL crypto routines are under the same terms as
the whole OpenSSL project. The OpenSSL license is not compatible to any
GPL software which makes the whole approach a GPL violation. This is a
problem on the GPL code side, however. Thus you have two alternatives:

a) Do not link against OpenSSL but GnuTLS
b) Tell the upstream authors of your software (i.e. those who provide
the GPL software) to make an OpenSSL linking exception [1][2]

I find it quite strange that the upstream authors are aware of this
problem but do not care to violate their own licensing terms by the way
(this makes alternative b) quite appealing to them I guess).

Both, Apache and APR is licensed under the terms of the Apache 2.0
Software License which is GPL compatible. There is no need to do such
things for ASF software.

 This condition is always true (also: not very portable). You want this

Thanks for catching this. Another version uploaded with a revised
postinst which is based on the updated DEP-9 example.

Bug#675701: RFS: ptop/3.6.2-7

2012-06-04 Thread Bart Martens
Hi Bas,

I suggest to do the following changes:
- Remove machine/m_gnu.c from debian/patches/ptop_hurd,
- Add cp -f machine/m_linux.c machine/m_gnu.c to debian/rules,
- Add debian/clean containing machine/m_gnu.c,
- Add similar changes for the other arch(s) with the same problem,
- Rename debian/patches/ptop_hurd to debian/patches/archs,
- Update Architecture: in debian/control.

I'm not sure about removing hppa and powerpcspe from ptop's archs list because
I don't know the issue with debhelper on these archs. Is it really a permanent
problem ? Maybe ptop can have Architecture: any.
This page
http://buildd.debian-ports.org/status/package.php?p=debhelpersuite=sid
states No entry in hppa database, check Packages-arch-specific but this page
https://buildd.debian-ports.org/quinn-diff/sid/Packages-arch-specific
seems to fail at this time.

I looked this up:
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile
must be accompanied by a verbatim copy of its copyright information
should name the original authors

I see in the file LICENSE that William LeFebvre is copyright holder but that is
not yet mentioned in debian/copyright. That's a must for debian-policy.

I see that there are quite some authors. Mentioning them in debian/copyright
is a should for debian-policy. To help you with listing them, I found these
authors so far:

  Andrew Herbert
  Andrew S. Townley
  Anthony Baxter
  Ariel Faigon
  Christos Zoulas
  Joep Vesseur
  John Haxby
  John Schimmel
  Kevin Schmidt
  Larry McVoy
  Mike Hopkirk
  Richard Henderson
  Sandeep Cariapa
  Thorsten Lockert
  Torsten Kasch
  William LeFebvre
  Rich Holland
  Mark Wong

I think that the list is pretty complete, but it's possible that I've missed a
few. I have left out the e-mail addresses to prevent complaints about spam. I
suggest to add this list to debian/copyright. It's a should for
debian-policy.

Regards,

Bart Martens

Bug#670334: Sponsoring of notion, a first look

2012-06-04 Thread Philipp Hartwig
Hi Axel,

thank you very much for your comments.

 a few observations (without having gone too deep yet, so I might have overseen
 some reasoning):

 notion_3+2012042300.orig.tar.gz from your package and
 notion-3-2012042300-src.tar.gz from SF seem to differ:

 0ffd57a75f2c1a75ce551b3baef1fee0  notion_3+2012042300.orig.tar.gz
 96d004374e92e3188608a39afea2d75f  notion-3-2012042300-src.tar.gz

 -rw-r--r--  1 abe tar 754121 May 16 15:29 notion_3+2012042300.orig.tar.gz
 -rw-r--r--  1 abe tar 762655 Apr 23 18:42 notion-3-2012042300-src.tar.gz

 Is this on purpose?

The files in the two archives are the same according to a recursive md5sum,
only the parent directories are called differently (we use 3-... as an
upstream version, which we change to 3+... when importing into the Debian git
repository to comply with [1]) and some file status information differs
(maybe/probably for the same reason).

 The upstream ChangeLog says (The ChangeLog will be generated by
 release scripts from svn logs) -- looks like packaging a VCS
 snapshot. But the version suggests that an official upstream release
 and not a snapshot is packaged. Also such a ChangeLog stub should IMHO
 not show up in the Debian package as it's useless.

Arnout has dropped the changelog, thanks.

 Even if mentors.d.n hasn't found relevant lintian warnings, the new
 lintian does. :-)

 [hardening flags]

We have enabled hardening flags through a Debian patch to the build system. A
few Lintian warnings remain, but according to a discussion in #debian-mentors,
these are false positives.

Regards,
Philipp
