Using rec: $ rec -c 2 test.wav $ play test.wav Using audacity: Edit --- Preferences -- Channels: 2(stereo) Then I can record from microphone Note: In audacity, when recording, I see L R - in the input level meter. Only Right channel R works. The Left channel dosen't works. Maybe this is why we can't record mono sound. I was surprised that you had a different alsa version than mine, even though we have the same kernel. But alsactl actually gives you the version of the alsa tools, not of the used alsa drivers. Thanks for your help. But this is not a good solution. I could record using audacity when turning OFF the volume for Monitor (I don't remember with which kernel). If you turn on volume for Monitor, you may get much noise. Please note that I run Gentoo Linux and I have this alsa version: I don't think this make a difference for using mic. I have the same problem, with an iBook G4 of the late 2005. As far as I could tell, it is not detecting any recording devices (and, prior to kernel 2.6.15, I had to manually apply a dirty hack to the kernel source for sound to function properly).
