CAN-2004-1171 is about a security hole in KDE that allows for possible
passoword leakage:

KDE 3.2.x and 3.3.0 through 3.3.2, when saving credentials that are (1)
manually entered by the user or (2) created by the SMB protocol handler, =
stores
those credentials for in plaintext in the user's .desktop file, which may=
 be
created with world-readable permissions, which could allow local users to
obtain usernames and passwords for remote resources such as SMB shares.

Note that this will need to be fixed in both the version in unstable
and the older version in testing via t-p-u. This page has details of the
hole and links to patches for all recent versions of KDE:

Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/startkde

This [incredibly] annoying behavior, I think, is due to how the
preinst script handles upgrades. It really should check to make sure
the version being upgraded from is old enough that there's a need to
call update-alternatives --auto (thereby dumping the administrator's
preferred x-session-manager in favor of startkde).

Severity: grave

CAN-2004-1125 is about a buffer overflow vulnerability in xpdf. As
kpdf contains a copy, it is also affected (see the KDE Security
  Advisory [1]).

[1] http://www.kde.org/info/security/advisory-20041223-1.txt

This issue has been fixed in sid with the upload of kdegraphics
4:3.3.1-2. An upload of kdelibs 4:3.3.2-0pre2 to experimental is
planned, and I'm creating this bug report so that the vulnerability in
  sarge becomes documented.

kdegraphics = 4:3.3.1-2 is scheduled to be included in sarge soon.

It seems that no kdegraphics packages are available in version 3.2.3

-- cut from the inoffical KDE Security Advisory --

kfax, a small utility for displaying fax files, contains
for historic reasons a private copy of libtiff.
Therefore it is vulnerable to these issues as well.

As a workaround, you can remove the kfax binary and the
kfax_multipage KPart from your system to be on the safe
side. A new package is now on ktown.

This issue is already sort-of public because Red Hat already announced
it as part of their kdegraphics update.

Cheers,
amu

The package still didn't do the libtiff transition to
libtiff4-dev in sarge. It's still build depending on
libtiff3g-dev.

There is a fixed version stuck in unstable.

Referring to kde bugzilla bug #79443 (including
patch), posted 2004-April-11th:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=79443
This bug is fixed in konqueror-3.2.3, but I think it
should be fixed for Sarge.

Currently the Always option has the same behaviour
as the Never option, starting new processes on every
launch, rather than creating a window from an already
running konqueror-process (should there be one).

I think this should be fixed as it improves
performance on slower computers by quite a bit. As it
is now, users may think that they've chosen the
fastest option, while they've actually got the slowest
one going.

Bug #245192 reported distortion when playing MP3's through artsd. The
problem was actually with mpeglib. The resolution was that version
3.2.3 was going into Sid and hence into Sarge, but that version never
made it into Sarge and the problem still exists.

Apparently mpeglib must be built with -O0.

Call kuickshow /usr/share/apps/kweather (with kweather installed).
A file selection dialog is shown where you can select which image
you want to see. When you press the down cursor button, the selection
doesn't always jump to the next one but often jumps over items.

Package: kdebase-bin
Version: 4:3.3.0-1
Severity: critical
File: kde
Justification: breaks the whole system

I've had this problem for weeks if not months, and it is very annoying. I
haven't
been able to locate _exactly_ where the problem comes from, but it happens very
often that, when I quit KDE (be it by logging out, restarting or turning off my
computer), the screen becomes black with the mouse pointer centered, and
everything freezes. I then have no choice but to power off my system manually.

The only thing I'm sure about is that the problem is somewhere in the base
packages of KDE: this bug only happens when I use KDE (I've been using gnome,
xfce4 and others to test X, but this *never* happened with others window/desktop
managers), and closing all apps before exiting makes no change.

I've rebuilt some of my packages with apt-build (never using higher levels than
-02 plus a few extra safe options) and I wondered if this had something to do
with the unstability of my system under KDE, but I don't think so; since I use
apt-get dist-upgrade on a daily basis, surely most of - if not all - those
packages have long since been replaced.

Dying to read a solution ... KDE is such a great environment with such great
apps, but this is really getting on my nerves. More and more.

When opening large XML files, and when trying to close tags that span
multiple pages, Kate will seem to close the entire document. Things
like,

document
element
... spans multiple pages
/element
element
... more stuff here
/element
/document

closing the first element will not make the second one visible.

A work around is to scroll though the entire document. I'm guessing that
Kate does not parse the entire document when it is initially open.

I want to add that I experienced no problems with woody and the
KDE 3.1.3 backport.

Package: konqueror
Version: 3.2.3-1.sarge.2
Severity: important
Tags: sarge

This could be related to Bug#238138 which has been closed since version
3.3 in unstable supposedly fixed it. Using Sarge, however, I have been
experiencing random Konqueror crashes for some time now. For this
reason, I am adding the sarge tag to this report (I really wish the RMs
would let in KDE 3.3).

It happens totally at random. I cannot associate any particular usage
pattern on my part with these crashes, and it can happen with any URL
imaginable (I believe it has happened even with sites such
freshmeat.net, linuxtoday.com, and slashdot.org).

System is a recent Sarge install and fully up-to-date (including t-p-u).

There is usually a long time (up to a couple of days) between crashes. I
use this system 24/7 and Konqueror is always open and heavily used with
several tabs (URLs) accessed/opened.

I don't get it, and unfortunately I don't feel like experiencing with
http://www.kde-debian.org/~domi/debugging-kde-crash.html on this
particular system. Sorry, about that. I know this report is not of much
help to you wrt debugging the problem.

B/R,

Package: juk
Version: 4:3.2.2-1
Severity: normal

On particular tracks (mp3), juk will either crash (SEGV) if using gstreamer for
output, or stop playing if arts is being used.

With gstreamer, juk crashes reliably at the same point every time. With arts,
playback of that file is not even started, and does not proceed to the next
track.

mpg321 plays the file(s) perfectly.

Cheers,

Nick

Upgrading SQLite tables to v8 format...Ok.

Then it tries to start the director but gives the same error as above.

Checking the postinst it is quickly clear why:

The 'test' ('[') invocation should not be there; the if needs to check the
exit code of the upgrade script by itself.

Ooopsss.. yet another typo.
Guess i have to seriously consider migrating to 'dbconfig-common' to
avoid these in the future :-S

Anyways, the fix is already included.

I seem to remember having fixed this before for the v6-v7 upgrade in my NMU.

It's certainly possible. I might have made a mistake when hand-patching
or somehow re-introduced the bug later.

Anyways, it won't happen again.

Patch attached.

Thank you very much, Filip.

The corrected version will be uploaded as soon as possible (as soon as
my sponsor is back home)

Bug#285794: Kmail crash fixed upstream but is not in 3.3.2

2005-01-04 Thread Kjetil Kjernsmo
Hi!

This bug has also bitten me, and a lot of other people it seems.

It is noted upstream in this report:
http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90320

From comment #11 and #14, the fix has not made it too 3.3.2, it seems. I
figured it may be useful for the maintainers too, in case the fix could
be backported to Debian packages for upcoming uploads.

I'm trying to make a small contribution by reviewing stuff in the BTS,
but I'm a bit unsure how to appropriately tag the bugs. Yesterday, I
marked a bug forwarded, just to have a record of where it was
forwarded, not that I forwarded it. That might not be such a good idea,
I guess.

This bug should be marked upstream for sure, but I'm a bit uncertain
whether it should be marked fixed-upstream too, as it has not been
fixed in any packages yet released. Please clue me in, if there is
time.

Cheers,

Kjetil

Bug#288653: kdelibs-data fails to install because of a clash with kjscmd

2005-01-04 Thread Erik Schnetter
Package: kdelibs-data
Version: 4:3.3.1-4
Severity: normal

While upgrading my system with aptitude from KDE 3.3.2 to KDE 3.3.1,
the package kdelibs-data could not be installed. The installation
aborted with the error message

Preparing to replace kdelibs-data 4:3.2.3-2 (using

which is also in package kjscmd

After that, aptitude aborted the install because Processing was
halted because there were too many errors.

The package kjscmd was also selected for upgrading.

If kdelibs-data and kjscmd cannot be installed at the same time, then
the packaging system should know about this.

Bug#288653: kdelibs-data fails to install because of a clash with kjscmd

2005-01-04 Thread Erik Schnetter
I solved the problem in the following way:

1. I uninstalled the package kjscmd by hand, using dpkg. After that,
aptitude was able to continue without problems.

2. I re-installed kjscmd. This also worked without a problem.
