Unfortunately, simply reverting the .symbols change is not enough, as
dpkg-gensymbols is passed -c4 option which makes freerdp FTBFS due to
 newly added symbols.

What do you suggest? Lowering -c4 to -c3 to ignore the symbols change?
Adjusting the patch to flag the recently added functions as static?

I think changing the patch is the way to go.

[RFH] Release of D-I Alpha1

2012-04-23 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

I've been trying to get around to finish d-i release but I've been
failing; I am involved in a huge project at work and haven't had much
free time et all so I couldn't finish it.

I do need help to manage the missing steps and testing. Is someone
willing to help on it?

I'm sad to ask for it but I won't be able to take it by myself and do
need your help.

Cheers,

Count with me for testing installation images.
Can you elaborate remaining steps where we can help?

To what we had for a1 basically:

 get CD images built (Steve, yey!);
 test them
 finish announce mail
mail to to d-d-a if all above work

I'm sad to ask for it but I won't be able to take it by myself and do

I'm sure my opinion is shared with many others, we are glad to participate
 :)

After a1:

check new and current bugs that has known fixes or are easy to fix
 work on those
 start preparing a2 / b1

Not that I am aware of, except the change on installer itself that I

Right now, on a stable system, that will result in USE_UDEBS_FROM being
set to 6.0.4. That doesn't seem like it will do anything useful,
particularly as there's no such directory in dists/ (there's a
Debian6.0.4 symlink, but I imagine that trying to get apt to use that
 is unlikely to work well).

Ok; I can fix this using lsb_release -c -s in case it is not unstable.

I realise that the plan is for it to be handled via the new variable, I
just wonder if there's an alternative approach that doesn't rely on
changes to every {old,}stable, testing and experimental build chroot. I
pondered suggesting parsing sources.list, but then realised that won't
work if sources.list.d files are in use.

I did a version that parsed sources.list before but it has too many
possible complications here.

This would allow us to have the experimental building working, using
experimental buildds, and use unstable for beta and rc releases. When
stable comes, buildds can set the suite according too.

Has this been discussed with the buildd folks yet, given they'd need to
be the ones adding all the flag files?

Only at Debconf; after that no. We ought to discuss this with them too.

Automatically identify the suite to use for udeb fetching

2012-02-02 Thread Otavio Salvador
[ Please reply to debian-boot ]

To try to work out of box for most situations we use
/etc/debian_version information to detect from witch suite to
grab udebs from but allow for overriden by auto-builders.

After this change, following use-cases are covered:

 - Building from UNRELEASED code: default to unstable;

 - If /etc/buildd_target exists, use this for suite (to be used by
   buildds)

 - Otherise, use /etc/debian_version to detect the suite to use.

No problem from our POV.

Do the daily builds only uncover issues from building the initrd? A.k.a.

Mostly; the only addition situation we'll need to rebuild the

language so we get the 'translation-status' file updated into the
initrd.

We might need to find a way to avoid rebuilding just because *one*
language changed. Mostly because this happens really often..we don't
really have control about the translator's schedule and they happen to
commit things more or less randomly (with peaks when something is
changed in a string, or when strings are added: some like to be 100%
 all time long..:-)).

But this will change only when we upload the package to the archive so
we can try to upload a set of packages with translation updates to
avoid this. Basically the binNMU would be triggered when the
translation status change for a language and since we work with
percentage this will not change on every translation update.

As I'm watching all this very regularly, we could maybe imagine
something where the i18n coordinator can trigger an l10n-rebuild
because (s)he notices that a given language changed significantly
enough to be worth itor because it has been too much time since
the last rebuild and many very small changes piled up.

Or maybe if there's no initrd changes queue it to the end of week if
nothing else changes?

[RFC] Problems regarding automatic binNMUs

2011-07-29 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

In debian-installer we have a status file that is used to warn the
users depending if their language is not full translate. Currently
when we prepare the release upload we run a script that downloads the
source of all udebs and prepare a table of the level of translation to
each language (example attached).

With the use of binNMUs to gather new updates in unstable we will face
a problem of how to update this file in the source. My current
proposal is:

* For each udeb upload:
  * DAK stores into a table the number of strings and the number of
translations for each language
  * DAK stores a similar file into
dists/foo/main/Translation-Status-udeb.txt with the proper values

With it, the installer, during the build can download it and keep it
updated regarding the translation status of every language
automatically.

Comments, welcome ;-)

Changes to Debian Installer release process

2011-07-28 Thread Otavio Salvador
I used some of Debcamp and Debconf time this year to discuss the
Debian Installer release process with some people and after talking
with many people it seems we agreed on the following changes on Debian
Installer release process and it would be interesting to receive
feedback on those to see if anyone see a problem we didn't notice yet.

* Official uploads to be built against unstable

Currently when we do a source upload of debian-installer it gather
all build-depends on /unstable/ but the udebs from /testing/. We want
to get it change and all udebs be fetched from unstable so we will
migrate it all to testing when ready and not before building as done
currently. This is going to make easier to Debian Installer and Debian
Release teams to coordinate the migration of packages to testing.
Philipp will send a mail regarding this with more details later.

 * Linux kernel udebs to be built from linux source package

We won't get rid of kernel-wedge instead linux source package will
use it during the build process to produce all the kernel udebs from
it. Ben will send a mail about this later with a more detailed
description.

 * Debian Installer daily builds to be done from source uploads

The daily builds will use the archive source for building so every
time we do a change in unstable in a module that is included in initrd
it will trigger a binNMU in all architectures replicating what we have
in daily builds. When source changes in debian-installer source
package are done, a new source upload will be required.

 * Debian Installer experimental builds

With Linux kernel udebs built from linux source we have the
possibility to get the installer built against the development kernel
that will be available on experimental and this is quite important to
us to be able to test all this before it is available in unstable to
avoid bad surprises for us and users. This will also be a handy tool
for us to play with not well tested or finished stuff without breaking
installer to end users.

For now, I think we will need to use an infra-structure similar of
what we have today for daily builds for those.

 * Use of britney to handle package and installer migration

This is the end of the process and some details are yet unknown how
this is going to happen however but our goal is to make it happen
since it will alleviate a lot the amount of work to make Debian
Installer release to happen.

It is important to notice that it is not a single-man effort but a
coordinate and shared effort of Debian Kernel, Debian Release and
Debian Installer teams to get all this done. Those changes are not
going to happen at once but in a progressive process and at the end
this is going to make the installer release process easier to
understand and handle.

Please share your ideas regarding those proposed changes so we can
start looking on the required changes to accomplish all this.

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

This is one thing I prefer to not fix since it makes too easy to
people to use d-i with untested kernel versions and this is a big
problem specially with stable releases since people try to use d-i
with newer kernels and this can resuing in different level of

Imagine that people could be using lenny installer with wheezy kernel

they're changing a hardcoded value and then it's their responsability

So the steps seem to be:

Well, this is my goal too so it will be much eaiser to deal with d-i

And, since this thread demonstrates that we don't have an agreed on
 human-understandable name for it --
Perhaps we should determine what the suite will finally be called in

Any changes to desktop tasks are inherently dangerous, the KDE CD

affect what ends up on CD1 for any given CD set worry me, particularly
given the last minute problems we had for 6.0.0 with getting the release

KDE CD1 to fit on a single CD for some architectures.

cdebconf and debootstrap can go soon. installer itself neeeds lkdi.

The problem here is that the CD layout will change completely and can

Re: Unblock xserver-xorg-video-geode

2010-09-21 Thread Otavio Salvador
Hello,

2010/9/21 Martin-Éric Racine q-f...@iki.fi:
Andres Salomon submitted a simple fix for this issue. Basically, we no
longer check the panel bit. Instead, we only check if we're running on
DCON-equipped hardware to make an exact match for the OLPC XO-1
configuration which, if found, will set the display to the XO-1's
unique resolution. This has been committed upstream and could be added
to the current 2.11.9 package as a patch and pushed as 2.11.9-3.

Is there any other issue left to address, before this unblock request
 can be approved?

Please prepare the package and let me know so I can sponsor it for you.

Agreed.

 I don't understand the change to lx_crtc_gamma_set.

This was a fix for gnome-screensaver.

Change: 2bcbc0b64091218d348ad9f699370e4bfde3948b

I can't review most of the EXA changes, but hey, what could possibly go
 wrong...

 +    if (pGeode-Output  (OUTPUT_PANEL | OUTPUT_DCON)) {

The check kind of disagrees with the comment, this will match for an
 OUTPUT_PANEL with isn't OUTPUT_DCON.

This matches the panels used in OLPC machines. It is the flag seted in
LXPreInit (lx_driver.c). It looks OK for me.

   * [udeb] disable CONFIG_CTTYHACK as it's no longer used in D-I.

The most unknown effect is probably:

broken as this version is what we have in the daily builds.

 Otavio, any objections?

Sure not; this is safe to be unblocked also because it is included on initrd.

I know, but I was advised to ignore kFreeBSD at the time because porting

that has gone upstream in Linux 2.6.31-rc releases (and is currently
in use in the linux-2.6 2.6.30 packages in sid).

Really good news :-)

I'd like to see if we can enable the use of this driver in 5.0.3.
As far as I can tell, the necessary steps would be:

  - Update the kernel (obviously) - planned for a p-u upload this week
  - Backport the necessary changes for firmware-nonfree from sid to add
   the firmware-bnx2x package
  - Update kernel-wedge/stable to include bnx2x if available (are there
   space issues here?)

The space usage is neglitable and I think it can be done with a very
small risk of regressions.

Be sure to use the kernel-wedge of lenny for building it since we've
changed kernel-wedge a lot during the 2.6.30 migration and it is not
suitable for the lenny usage.

  - Update d-i in 5.0.3 to incorporate this driver

Yes, you got the picture right.

I offer help if required.

I have no problem in prepare that fix for it however it needs a full

Most of these belong to regular packages, i.e. not udeb-only. There are

only used when d-i is used by Emdebian pre-seeding. I generally upload
a new version of emdebian-tools quite soon after each previous version

Currently it's the only way, though we're working on changing that.

Neil, I belive that the udeb could have the own source package so it
could make your life easier (and our too).

I second the idea of having it in a specific source package.

Re: [RFC] Debian Installer related scripts suitable for moving

2009-03-03 Thread Otavio Salvador
Adeodato Simó d...@net.com.org.es writes:

 * Otavio Salvador [Mon, 02 Mar 2009 20:10:34 -0300]:

 Hello,

 Hi,

RM people has get in touch with me asking for which script we consider
 suitable for moving into release.debian.org.

I'll note that our goal was/is to do whatever is needed to make your
situation better in this regard. I think it was you who suggested this
move would make things better for you, that's why I brought it back.

We were at that time talking about the testing package status not being
up to date and then we considered it was more logical to move it to a
more appropriated place. IIRC this was the basis of our talking at that
moment.

Just clarifying this is not a Release Team must do it all! move.

Sure. We're not considering it this way.

 Christian writes:

Still, having it run under a developer account is a small weakness

So, another option would be for d-i to have its own role account,
accessible for d-i RMs and other selected people, and that way you can
be in charge of maintaining your own scripts.

I belive it works for us.

 Now, two things:

It was make clear to RM team that we need to be able to fix the scripts
by ourselfs and I belive that it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, if the scripts are going to be run on ftp-master under the
release role account, I don't think it's possible to grant you direct
modification access *to the code*. So, in this regard, this indeed adds
a further level of indirection, and if what you want is to be able to
commit to the VCS and have the next run pick up that code without human
intervention, maybe you should consider the d-i role acount route.

OTOH, for scripts that obtain data from the archive, I can easily
provide the initial code attacking the projectb database (rather than
the mirror), and the code is public, and patches should be fairly fast
 to integrate.

Additionally, if there are scripts that work against a static list of
packages (rather than, say, a dynamic list like all packages providing
udebs), then *that static list* can be fetched from the d-i SVN repo,
for example, which should account for most of the updates needed, once
 the code is stable.

So, really, please think it over, talk with us about which are your
goals and constraints, and we try to figure out what works best for
 everybody, okay?

Personally I belive that, after a small period of fixing, those scripts
should ramain mostly unmodified for long time. I don't think we'd need
to be able to push changes for next run.

Most of things will appear as soon as we do the switch and then we'll be
in touch to fix the remaning issues and getting it in a stable code. After
that, I do belive we can use RM people as a proxy for getting things fixed.

Even more due our nice collaboration we've been doing during Lenny and this
new development cycle.

The only ones that come to my head are:

  1. testing summary
 (http://merkel.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/testing-summary.html)
  2. building summary (http://people.debian.org/~joeyh/d-i/build-logs.html)

There is also http://ftp-master.debian.org/d-i. Which has a planned
revamp for ourselves, and I will move it to release.d.o at the same
 time.

Yes but this output could be merged into the testing-summary.

And, regarding #1 above, I confirm what I said on IRC: I am not able to
maintain that, plus it doesn't work against the projectb database, so
I'd rewrite it into something I can maintain: python + SQL + html
 templates.

I have no objection on that. I'm used to Python and SQL and can help fixing
things if required.

So, I'll wait to hear from you regarding all of the above. I'll repeat
that our goal is to make things better for you, and that you have to
help us figure out what that entails.

Sure. Before you start working on the scripts, give some time for people
to comment.

Cheers,

creation of crafted PNG files with keywords, related to an
implicit cast of the '\0' character constant to a NULL pointer.

Re: GTK+ update proposal for stable

2009-02-15 Thread Otavio Salvador
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

Josselin Mouette j...@debian.org writes:

 Hi,

we’ve been having a new version of GTK+ targeted to lenny ready for a
while, but refrained from uploading it because of the impact on the
 installer.

Without testing the binaries myself I think this is the best time to do
the update since we'll need to do a debian-installer update for 5.0.1
due the gpg key updating.

However we'd need to check if it doesn't include regressions at directfb
support even though being a bugfix release the risk is low.

If the release team agrees in principle, I need of course broad testing
of this package on lenny systems before even thinking of including it in
a point release. Packages are available there:
 http://malsain.org/~joss/debian/gtk+/

- From d-i POV we just need to do tests with those binaries to avoid
regressions; we could coodinate that together so we could give it a try
and if we find any regression deal with it before doing ahead with the
uploads.

However I'd wait for SRM team agreement about it before start any test
for it.

Cheers,
