I've been trying to install using the XFCE CD on a zx6000. The boot
rom doesn't recognise the CD as being bootable. The netinst CD does
work.

Re: Help with Wheezy CD testing on Saturday

2013-05-22 Thread Émeric Maschino
Hi,

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't have access to my zx6000 workstation
until now.

Just to let you know that I've successfully installed Wheezy using the
netinst CD on a spare HDD, using default parameters (using entire HDD and
one single partition as partition scheme) except for localization of course.

One manual intervention was nevertheless required. During the installation
process, the ELILO boot loader installation failed with /usr/sbin/elilo
returning error code 1. I've chosen to continue without installing a boot
loader and restarted my workstation using the netinst CD in rescue mode to
check what was going on. It finally appears that the default /etc/fstab
generated during Wheezy installation encompasses an incorrect entry (well,
to me, it is incorrect) mounting /dev/sd?1 (/dev/sdb1 in my case) to
/boot/efi. I've simply removed this entry, deleted the /boot/efi empty
folder created during Wheezy installation and rerun elilo -v to correctly
reinstall ELILO and then elilo --efiboot to create the GNU/Debian entry in
EFI.

Everything else ran fine.

Thanks to all who contributed to make Wheezy on ia64 a reality.

 Émeric

 Hi folks,

As we're expecting to release this Saturday (4th May) and I'm going to
be preparing the CDs and DVDs to go with the release, it would be
lovely if we have some volunteers to help test the images. We have
been doing testing of the daily, weekly and Release Candidate images
as they're produced, but it would be nice to get more coverage in the
 testing, especially:

  * non-PC architectures
  * more obscure combinations of options like partitioning, filesystems
etc.
  * different desktops with differing package sets

I've started a wiki page at

   https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/DebianCD/ReleaseTesting/Wheezy

and I'll be filling in more details there in the next couple of days,
including some specific configurations that I'd like to see tested. If
you can help us test on Saturday, please take a look and join me in
 #debian-cd where we'll be coordinating.

 Cheers,

Hi,

From debian-cd testing we have some things to perhaps add to the errata[0]:

 * DVD-1 doesn't offer a choice of desktop environment; it will install the
default (GNOME; or on kfreebsd, XFCE).
 * Installing linux on btrfs seems extraordinarily slow.
 * Installing kfreebsd on ufs may be slow.
 * The partitioner on kfreebsd may show a harmless warning about invalid ioctl
for a device; choose 'Ignore' to proceed.
 * mipsel: the CD/DVD install media are not bootable, and do not contain d-i -
 only packages.

Thanks,

The former is an unexpected feature, to be honest. The m-a DVD does
offer other desktops on the boot menu, but only Gnome fits. It's
something we'll put into the errata.

Actually that is what I thought; that tasksel was supposed to let me
choose. Maybe that feature was removed a very long time ago though in
favour of the boot menu options.

So the problem is rather, that some of the DVDs are unable to satisfy
the desktop chosen at the boot menu?
