I’ve just pushed this:
https://salsa.debian.org/ruby-team/schleuder/commit/6e74d4317536557d448abe2732cfce97c6f92757

And that gave me a pipeline:

I would have guessed that anonscm.d.o is going away when alioth is shut down.
So this would live on for just a few months - is the effort worth it?

I think we'd be interested; mostly our scripts are "this has worked
for me" (where me is one or more of our team members), but they
surely aren't comprehensive.

TTBOMK our setup script assumes that you'll be building with
sbuild+schroot, and then autopkgtest using lxc.

I think avoiding 2.4 because it would only be extra work for us with

On this I share Lucas' concerns about ABI stability, plus Ubuntu may
end up shipping a pre-release 2.5 then. Why not wait until 2.5 is
out before sending it to unstable?

I can see how it'd be nice to test with pre-release versions, but
maybe this is better done elsewhere (similar to what is done with
Haskell AFAIK?).

Please unblock package ruby-pdf-reader version 1.4.0-2

#850688 explains that the copies of the Type1 font files are not
actually distributed under a DFSG-free license when the MustRead.html

and updates d/copyright, which also was neglected in the past.

Please unblock package ruby-rabl, version 0.13.0-2.

This version adds a patch from Gilles Filippini to fix FTBFS bug
#849315.
While globally patching BSON to expose the removed 'serialize'
method again might not be the nicest thing to do, I agree it's the
best thing to do for stretch. (Effect limited to users importing
ruby-rabl, very tiny change, no other packages appear to care about
the specifics.)

building this?
Also, rdeps chain to gitlab for this one, so I'm not going to upload
it. Somebody else can surely take a look though.

I've uploaded that (as -2), but note:

 - this is just one (source) package, not two
 - I've merged the changelogs from master and stretch branches and

I can't test gitlab either, but if that depends on a specific bundler

your package vim-command-t has a libruby2.3 < 2.3.x.y dependency,

If ninix-aya already fails with 2.2.5-5, that obviously warrants
filing the bug as RC.

Ack. Do not leave them too much time though, the stretch freeze is
coming...

This is true; right now, being a "ruby-interpreter" implies:

 1. actually have /usr/bin/ruby and related bins.
 2. support all native extensions. **

Which is a lot of work. Previously, ruby had version-specific packages
(not different from having interpreter-specific packages).

We thought through a number of options before moving to the current
state. IIRC some of these were:

  - All libs get an interpreter/version-specific package and
dependencies are always on a specific package. The virtual
ruby-interpreter package can go away.
This is a lot of busy work: introducing and removing binary
packages all the time, when there is no actual code change in
*most* packages.

  - Do not support more than version/implementation. We are
doing this today. The existence of ruby-interpreter is
an internal artifact.

  - All libs support all interpreters. We are doing this during
transitions (e.g. 2.1->2.2). This is why ruby-interpreter
exists today ***.

[..]

> 2. Given that all invocation points must depend on an interpreter, ruby

>particular implementation.

Well, s/should not/do not need to/ in our case. I'd agree it would
be nicer if that would be done in all packages, but it is not a
priority.

> The Multi-Arch nerd over here also notes that this way allows annotating
> a significant chunk of ruby modules with Multi-Arch: foreign and that

Noted. A number of dependency cycles would also go away, I imagine.

** Plus, ruby-interpreter serves as an escape hatch for
bootstrapping rubyX.Y on new archs.
*** This is done using code in dh_ruby.

Most of our process is documented on the Teams/Ruby wiki page.

To contribute, please join the pkg-ruby-extras team on alioth, as
explained here:

   https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Ruby#Joining_Debian_Ruby_Extras_Maintainers

I'd also recommend you join the #debian-ruby IRC channel on OFTC for
quick answers to some questions you might have.

The actual git-based workflow is explained here:

   https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Ruby/Packaging

If you need help picking a bug from the dashboard, this one has high
impact and is probably relatively easy (only needs a new package for
ntlm-http):

Planning for the future / RFH

2016-07-17 Thread Christian Hofstaedtler
Hello everyone,

pkg-ruby-extras has ~1000 source package in unstable/main today.
Unfortunately, I've counted only 10 people uploading changes to more
than 10 packages in the last 6 months. I'm very concerned about
these numbers, given the "upcoming" freeze, where I think we'll lose
some of these interested people.

Therefore, please, if you know somebody who's interested in Ruby,
please encourage them to join the team and help on our packages.
Similarly, if you yourself do not have upload rights, please talk to
your sponsor and consider becoming a DD yourself.

In case anybody's bored and has no focus area, I'm sure Praveen and
Balasankar could use help with gitlab and diaspora; at the same time
there's a long list of (RC) bugs and todos on the team DMD:

https://udd.debian.org/dmd/?email1=pkg-ruby-extras-maintainers%40lists.alioth.debian.org
And on PET: https://pet.debian.net/pkg-ruby-extras/pet.cgi

If you happen to like C and interpreters, the ruby interpreter itself
also has some work to do. Right now the most pressing issue will be
OpenSSL 1.1.0 compatibility (#828535), the armel test suite issue,
and then some smaller bugs, and after the freeze, the ruby2.4
(or 2.5?) transition.

  C.

Too many similar deprecation messages reported, disregarding further reports.
Pass `--deprecation-out` or set `config.deprecation_stream` to a file for full
output.

Using `should` from rspec-expectations' old `:should` syntax without explicitly
enabling the syntax is deprecated. Use the new `:expect` syntax or explicitly
enable `:should` with `config.expect_with(:rspec) { |c| c.syntax = :should }`
instead. Called from
/tmp/autopkgtest.DS12rS/build.XsE/ruby-carrierwave-0.10.0+gh/spec/processing/mini_magick_spec.rb:25:in
 `block (3 levels) in '.

Using `stub` from rspec-mocks' old `:should` syntax without explicitly enabling
the syntax is deprecated. Use the new `:expect` syntax or explicitly enable

If you need more of the backtrace for any of these deprecations to
identify where to make the necessary changes, you can configure
`config.raise_errors_for_deprecations!`, and it will turn the
deprecation warnings into errors, giving you the full backtrace.

Note that upstream now says:

| This project is no longer maintained, for several reasons:
|
| * I've stopped using the workflow that made it relevant to me.
| * Git 2.0 updated the default behaviour to remove the main problem it
| was solving (by changing the default behaviour of git push so it
| acts only on the current branch, instead of all branches).
| * Auto-stashing is now supported natively with git rebase --autostash.

Therefore I'd strongly suggest not uploading this when it's upstream
is already gone.

Best,

Re: [DC16] Language Packaging Teams Skills Exchange

2016-07-08 Thread Christian Hofstaedtler
* Cédric Boutillier  [160708 13:33]:
> Will there be minutes or a summary made public for
> this event?

Unfortunately there was no note keeping (I think). The following is
what I can remember:

For the most part, there was a short demo of the scripts the perl
and ruby groups use;
for building, pkg-ruby has Antonio's build-and-upload, pkg-perl has
a script which I only remember as "b". (gregoa, can you explain?)

I've noted that pkg-ruby's "new-upstream" script could be replaced
by a git-buildpackage hook; pkg-perl has a larger wrapper script (as
"dpt import-orig") that does a few things more.

A short demo of "cme fix dpkg*" was given, as well as what
"dh-make-ruby -w" and "dh-make-perl refresh" do. David Bremner noted
that he forked dh-make-perl for emacs/elpa.

In general, pkg-perl has scripts under the "dpt" umbrella; while
this is also shipped as a package, the scripts are runnable from git
itself, and uploading those changes may lag a bit.

It was noted that while our scripts are partially tied to each
group, usually there's nothing inherently group specific, and the
scripts should be sharable if they'd were made configurable. It was
also noted that most scripts in "dpt" are not even perl scripts, so
everybody should be able to work on that.

A short discussion about "information tools" happened, where we
discussed usage of PET, Tracker, DDPO, vcswatch. Raphaël Hertzog
noted he wants PET data to be in Tracker; Gregor Herrmann noted that
the important part of PET is it's "real time" data updates (VCS
pushes cause an update of PET), and the current vcswatch integration
on DDPO lags by at least a day, making it not that nice to use.

I think that's it; if I forgot something, please point it out!

Outdated/Old packages

2016-07-07 Thread Christian Hofstaedtler
Hi,

I've recently selected two sets of packages that the team maintains:

1) packages that have not been uploaded in a while:
   https://gist.github.com/zeha/0ff1c8b8bd1559835d35

Why are these interesting?
It's likely that, a) there may be a newer upstream version, b) they
don't actually work or have broken/missing gemspecs. In general
these packages tend to be in bad shape and could use a "maintenance"
upload.

2) packages that have no reverse (build) dependency:
   https://gist.github.com/zeha/9a511c3d26e18664cb1dce0af2aa9ac2

Why are these interesting?
Packages that are not applications often have been introduced as a
dependency of something else, but then never get updated or removed
when the depending package loses interest. As such, they also tend
to .. bitrot.

I'd like to request help with a general QA effort, focused on group
1. Having stale packages in sid isn't really good and we'll have a
freeze in November. Please plan your updates :-)

Best,

Re: Ruby BoF at DebConf16

2016-07-07 Thread Christian Hofstaedtler
Hi,

here are the edited minutes of this years Ruby BoF:

* State of shipped apps/packages
  - State of Rails:
stretch will ship with rails 4.2, unless something extraordinary happens
  - State of Gitlab:
working in unstable; issues with upgrades, stabilizing
  - State of Redmine:
latest upstream release for stretch; some issues on jessie (snapshot
release)
  - State of Diaspora:
Diaspora 6 bis being prepared
  - State of open-build-service:
Andrew Lee working on it. might ship in stretch

* General direction: should the team focus on packaging apps vs. providing a
lot of
libraries (which are not used by the apps we ship)?
At this time the team maintains >= 1000 packages (up from 800 last year).
Decision: libraries that are not broken should mostly be kept.

* reverse-dependency breakage check. Often when libraries are updated, their
reverse dependencies break, especially the larger applications.
  - ACTION: terceiro: add app test for key packages to build-and-upload
  - key packages: gitlab, redmine, diaspora, rails, obs (when ready)

* QA cleanup:
  - Remove ruby-bdb? yes.
  - Remove ruby-bluecloth? yes.
  - Remove ruby-hpricot? too many rdepends.
  - Many packages did not see uploads for a long time. zeha@ will seperately
mail
about this and call for help.
  - Many leaf packages are outdated versions, help is needed to update these.
zeha@
will mail as well.

* General TODOs for stretch:
  - OpenSSL 1.1.0 will likely be in stretch, ruby 2.3 does not support it.
Help is welcome to look at backporting the changes and/or shipping
ruby-openssl
unbundled instead - note that upstream is not done yet.
  - Reduce number of outdated libraries (update those where possible)
  - ruby2.3 package does not build reproducibly. Help needed.
  - Introduce git-buildpackage patch-queue usage for the team?
