Bug#855078: giac: FTBFS: [algo.pdf] Error 139 (Segmentation fault)

2017-06-29 Thread Edmund Grimley Evans
This robopatch seems to fix the problem on arm64 with 48-bit addresses:

perl -i -pe 's/longlong/ulonglong/g if /\(\s*longlong.*(<<|>>)/ &&
!/gen\(longlong/;' src/*.cc

The idea is to change the type whenever there seems to be a cast
followed by a shift. The last condition is to avoid a couple of
harmful false positives.

For easier maintenance you might want to move the code that packs and
unpacks addresses into one place rather than have it scattered all
over the place.

Dear Maintainer,

When I try to start sage it show this message :

I don't know how to fix this. Notice that similar message appears
when i try "sage --notebook".

Cheers.

Package: libpetsc3.7.5-dev
Version: 3.7.5+dfsg1-4+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

since openmpi was upgraded in sid, libpetsc3.7.5-dev and libpetsc3.7.6-dev
became uninstallable on sid, since they depend on libopenmpi-dev (< 2.0.3).
I tried compiling the package from source but it gets stuck precisely when
checking mpi. Upon further checking it looks like the openmpi development
environment on my laptop is broken, despite all packages appear to be
correctly installed: many libs are installed only under
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/openmpi/lib, with no soft links to
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu (even if running dpkg -L libopenmpi2 says they
should be!).

Any chance to have petsc-dev installable again soon? petsc and slepc are
key dependencies of my quite a bit of my home-developed scientific software.
Any suggestion for a quick-n-dirty fix to get it to compile with the newer
openmpi?

Thanks in advance. I'll let you know if/when I can compile a working petsc
package from source.

Bye
Giacomo

if you want it being installable, just stop using sid.
sid is meant for transitions, so stuff is uninstallable from time to time.

You can email release team if you want openmpi to migrate faster

Ok, we should fix this then. The sage 8.0 package build actually stops
before dh_sphinxdoc currently (at override_dh_auto_install), so I don't
know yet if we have the same problem there.

Your package has been put into the NEW queue, which requires manual action
from the ftpteam to process. The upload was otherwise valid (it had a good
OpenPGP signature and file hashes are valid), so please be patient.

Packages are routinely processed through to the archive, and do feel
free to browse the NEW queue[1].

If there is an issue with the upload, you will receive an email from a
member of the ftpteam.

If you have any questions, you may reply to this email.

Bug#855078: giac: FTBFS: [algo.pdf] Error 139 (Segmentation fault)

2017-06-29 Thread Edmund Grimley Evans
So giac was supposed to be working now on arm64, but it failed on the buildd:

https://buildd.debian.org/status/package.php?p=giac=sid

Having recently seen something similar I think I can guess what's happening.

User virtual addresses on Linux arm64 may have 39, 42 or 48 bits,
depending on how the kernel is configured:

https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/arm64/memory.txt

It seems that giac now works with the smaller virtual addresses, but
fails on the buildd, which uses 48-bit addresses. According to the
comment in src/gen.h, SMARTPTR64 should handle 48-bit addresses, but
up to now it has probably only been tested on amd64, which uses 47-bit
addresses. A problem with the top bit? Sign extension perhaps?

Sure enough, in src/gen.cc there is code like this:

#ifdef SMARTPTR64
  (*((longlong *) ) >> 16)

I suspect that the fix will be to replace some of those longlong with ulonglong.
