Bug#878596: theano: FTBFS on big-endian systems - test_pooling_with_tensor_vars fails

2017-10-14 Thread Rebecca N. Palmer

Package: python-theano
Version: 0.9.0+dfsg-1
Severity: serious

Suspect the problem is theano/theano/tensor/signal/pool.py:650, which
effectively does int32 = *(int64 *)(pointer_to_some_int_type) - if
some_int_type is int32, that works on little-endian but not big-endian.

Hi Yaroslav,

thanks for those hints that somehow came to late since I just read it
after I implemented some hopefully working solution. I just uploaded
and we'll see what might happen. Every reader here is invited to fix
it if not / enhance it if not happy. :-)

Kind regards

FWIW my 1c to make someone pay 1$ (in proportion of time to be spent to
actually do it):

yeah, with nosetests it was possible to exclude in the command line... on a
quick google I didn't find for pytest (not that it doesn't exist), but
started to wonder if indeed would be better to provide a patch (to upstream)
for tests which are known to be failing on specific architectures, something
like

@known_to_fail_on(archs=['armel', ...])
@known_to_fail_on_bigendian
@known_to_fail_on_nonx32

see https://docs.pytest.org/en/latest/skipping.html#id1 on how to
establish those for now based on skipif . "For now", since ideally there
should be an easy way to trigger another behavior -- test which tests
known to fail before now pass. (we have got something like that in
datalad now for demarkating tests which fail atm with v6 of git-annex
repo)

upstream actually already has some tests marked up:

pandas/tests/indexes/test_interval.py:
@pytest.mark.skipif(compat.is_platform_32bit(),
pandas/tests/io/json/test_pandas.py:@pytest.mark.skipif(is_platform_32bit(),
pandas/tests/io/json/test_ujson.py:
@pytest.mark.skipif(compat.is_platform_32bit(),
pandas/tests/io/json/test_ujson.py:
@pytest.mark.skipif(compat.is_platform_windows() and not compat.PY3,

# and here comes a demo of the cool -p switch for git grep:

$> git grep -p skip.*endian pandas
pandas/tests/frame/test_constructors.py=class
TestDataFrameConstructors(TestData):
pandas/tests/frame/test_constructors.py:pytest.skip("known failure
of test on non-little endian")
pandas/tests/io/test_pickle.py=def test_pickles(current_pickle_data, version):
pandas/tests/io/test_pickle.py:pytest.skip("known failure on non-little
endian")

Package: src:theano
Version: 0.8.2-6
Severity: important

As far as I can tell, python3-theano does not install any compiled content
that requires access to the Python headers (e.g. Python.h). As a result, the
package build-depend on python3-all-dev is excessive. We use build-depends on
python3-all-dev and python3-dev to track which package need rebuilding for a
python3 transition and as far as I can determine, this one does not.

I rebuilt the package without any python-dev package installed and the result,
according to debdiff, was identical.

Not including a patch for the trivial change of changing the build-depends on
python3-all-dev to python3-all.

Marking important because of the potential for impact on transition planning.

 not all of News and Download.

   * Use the version in doc->source links,
 not a (usually non-existent) git commit number.
   * Make tests work with older nose-parameterized.
   * Use python(3)-dev not -all-dev.  (Closes: #867370)
   * Remove pre-minified Javascript, and instead minify at build time.
   * Use libjs-d3 instead of the embedded copy, but re-minify to
 work around #745688.
   * Clean up properly after build.
   * Use Suggests, not Recommends, between package and documentation.

I treid to approach this by re-using the exclusion mechanism that was
used before (but not activated) in the rules file of pandas[1]:

Unfortunately this ends up in:

...
pandas_datareader: None
usage: pytest.py [options] [file_or_dir] [file_or_dir] [...]
pytest.py: error: unrecognized arguments: --exclude
   inifile: /<>/setup.cfg
   rootdir: /<>
debian/rules:109: recipe for target 'python-test2.7' failed
...

I confirm that I have not found the --exclude option for pytest.

I'm not that experienced with pytest. From some short research I had
the idea to quilt patch some "slow" markers for the failing tests and
for the affected architectures ignore those "slow" tests.

Any better technical idea?

Indeed you could use a custom "slow" marker for it. The corresponding
patch should be upstreamable too if appropriately motivated.

Unfortunately this ends up in:

...
pandas_datareader: None
usage: pytest.py [options] [file_or_dir] [file_or_dir] [...]
pytest.py: error: unrecognized arguments: --exclude
  inifile: /<>/setup.cfg
  rootdir: /<>
debian/rules:109: recipe for target 'python-test2.7' failed
...

I confirm that I have not found the --exclude option for pytest.

I'm not that experienced with pytest. From some short research I had
the idea to quilt patch some "slow" markers for the failing tests and
for the affected architectures ignore those "slow" tests.

Any better technical idea?

Kind regards

Andreas.
