Hi!
  - this is not the list for these kind of questions, but i will giv it
 a try.

right !

 What is the full name of the libncurses you need to install in order to
 use make menuconfig. i have run apt-get install ncurses* and non of
 them works - i still get You need to have Ncurses installed when trying
 menuconfig.

apt-get install libncurses5-dev

 Runing woody and kernel 2.4.18.

Hello !
 concern.  Users can ssh into my machine but their profiles are fixed to
 run a menu of things I allow them to do.  Thus they can't get to the $
 prompt and thus can't cd to other directories to see what's there.  And

maybe i do not get the point but :
i think you should try 'pdmenu' as the shell for the users
