about the mta: use exim, it is the default mta in debian and it is extremely easy to configure for local delivery only (using eximconfig) about the subject of this mail: write something next time Tuesday 05 March 2002 20:18, B Beck Greetings all I'm currently building a firewall/router based on GNU/debian. This is my first time with such a project as I have previously used pre-packaged or configured firewalling solutions. I'd like the control of building it myself this time :) I'm using a minimal debian 3.0 (woody) install on a P60 with ~80MB RAM and a 1.6GB Hard Disk. I've compiled the 2.2.20 kernel with the corresponding LIDS patches for this as I'd like to use the TrinityOS ipchains ruleset in the native 2.2.* environment for ipchains, at least until I can translate the ruleset to iptables. However, my question/concern is this: I'm looking for an MTA to satisfy dependencies for cron and logcheck. I don't have alot of experience with Mail Transport Agents and I'm looking for others' input on what is perhaps the smallest and easiest configurable for my needs. I'm looking for minimal usage...basically only needed for local delivery to the root/postmaster account for notification of log anomalies, snort, and lids warnings, etc. I've also considered setting up a loghost over a serial connection and perhaps this would be a better way to deliver such messages? Can anyone share some insight on this and perhaps some howto links? --- regards, Brad Beck - linux guru in beta --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. --- regards, Brad Beck - linux guru in beta ---
Re: Unidentified subject! [MTA for Firewall System]
B Beck, 2002-Mar-05 13:18 -0600: Greetings all I'm currently building a firewall/router based on GNU/debian. Exim is also easy to configure from what I hear. Be sure your configuration does NOT allow for mail relay. :-) jc -- Jeff CoppockSystems Engineer Diggin' Debian Admin and User

I also use postfix. I would point out that postfix might be better for a firewall configuration than exim, as it's default behaviour is somewhat more paranoid than exim. However, this is a moot point if you're blocking port 25 (which you should if it's just a firewall). It's also nice that there are example LIDS configurations for postfix on the LIDS website. crh -- Corey R. Although you raise a very good point. I have a severe problem with this notion of a whitehat cracker. For example: If I left the keys in the door and someone unlocked my door, walked in and then called me and said hey, stupid, i'm in your home -- I'm calling you from there, see!. I'd say hey, thanks, now get out! Its still an invasion, still wrong in the every sense of what wrong is. Would I be happy that the person didn't steal my television or rifle my closet, sure... I'd be happy. But I'd also feel sort of violated and robbed. Think about it. Regardless of how stupid you are, the law protects people that are dumb. Why should computers be treated differently? I think the point of a cracker being a white hat person only goes so far. To me, no cracker is a good cracker. If everyone knew that it was highly illegal and the penalty out weighed the crime, we wouldn't be having this list, and we wouldn't be having these discussion. my opinion of course.. but I'm entitled to it. BTW, as a related short story. Last week my office was broken into. The door was jimmy'd and all that was stolen was a radio and a CD... shit, a $35 sony radio and an Elvis Costello My Aim is True CD (bastards!). Anyway, when I called the police, they came in 15 mins, filed a report and told me they actually might know who it was based on an arrest that was made in the neighborhood. Great!!! Now, when I think of what a crack or breach into my network could do to my business, I get sick to my stomach. This is far worse than someone breaking into my office and stealing shit. The real problem is that I have people try and break in ALL THE TIME. I mean hourly... Who do I call? The police? Hello, all ;) I've recently installed on my debian potato the telnetd 0.17-5. And after I tried to exploit this, with 7350854.c exploit. But, fortunately, nothing was wrong, telnetd survived ok. I have a question: is the telnetd 0.17-5 exploitable and where to get exploit to try security? Best regards, Mike -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Re: Unidentified subject!
Hello, First, you should (keep cool and ... ;o) ) know which dns server you are running. Look in the processes (ps -ax) if there is something like bind or djbdns, or anything that could be a dns server. The lsof command can help (look at what listens to port 53), as the dpkg and apt-get commands (see man dpkg and man apt-get : dpkg -s bind gives you the status of the bind package - apt-get remove bind removes the bind package and apt-get install bind installs it). When you know which dns you are running, type in man (server-name), like man bind. Also see /usr/share/doc/bind and /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt (there is a file called DNS-HOWTO.txt.gz (zless /usr/share/doc/HOWTO/en-txt/DNS-HOWTO.txt.gz) When you have read all those files, you should find a directory called /etc/bind - there you find named.conf, the general configuration file, and db.zone - containing your databases. Make man named.conf - and dont forget : a missing dot can make your dns not working properly ;) But bind is NOT the easiest one to configure. And it's NOT the most robust. Have a look at djbdns homepage (http://cr.yp.to/djbdns.html). But you should also be sure your domain names are registred (if your ip's are public and you want them to be accessed from outside, at least) - therefore, you have a procedure with the place you bought your domain names to say them that your dns (you have to give them your fixed ip adress) is authoritative for your zone - this means that when a dns request is done to any dns and your ip-FQDN is not cached there, the queried root dns will say that the client should ask your dns for the requested info. That's the first thing to do if you want your names to be resolved from outside. DNS is NOT an easy administration to do. Maybe you should read http://www.freesoft.org/CIE/Course/index.htm - there is an excellent DNS section. Have fun, and have a look at http://lab.dexter.be - the most important is reading. Re: Unidentified subject!
I think it's getting clearer, but I don't know if you'll be able to do this. Do you have authority over the debian-tr.org zone? If not, you can probably only simulate this authority in a lab environment, but I won't get into that. So, like Petro says: go and find the DNS howto at linuxdoc.org. Also, the O'Reilly DNS and BIND book is excellent. You definitely should have a copy of this handy if you will be running your own nameserver. But to point you in the right direction, you want to make an A record like this (using the example you provided) in the debian-tr.org zone file: mac.eam IN A 142.12.1.13 This zone file should be configured in the named.conf running in BIND on eam.debian-tr.org, which in turn should be listed as a master DNS server for the debian-tr.org zone in WHOIS and the *.gtld-servers.com. root servers. I will also point out to you that BIND has had a sordid history as far as security is concerned. If you want your box to get cracked at some point, run named as the root user. If you are smart, you will figure out how to run it in a chroot'd environment as a non-root user. G'luck. phil.
G'luck. phil. hi, I got a similar problem on a machine running IPCHAINS. after an upredictable time period the machine suddenly forgets the ethernet card and results 100% packet loss even ifconfig shows the interface is there and then crashes. I can see the card starts blinking and packets are coming but there is nothing in the log about that and the interface is there but it is not. I tried dist-upgrade ( only the base system was installed on it and mc nothing else ) and it did not help. I have changed the ethernet card and it did not help and as a result I changed the distribution to lame Redhat 6.2 for trial and it works, no problem after that my manager said never touch a running system so I could not switch back to debian. My kernel was 2.2.19 pre 17 and nothing unstable. I believe the problem is with the 2.2.19 kernel since the only difference between the base systems of redhat and debian 2.2r3 is 2.2.14 and 2.2.19 not much else. I recommend you to upgrade your sys to 2.2.4 kernel. --- Nick Name [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi all. I run a stable with some package from testing (XFree86 4.02 and konqueror). I first thought of a worm, the latest ramen variant (don't remember the name right now), but I didn't find any sign of it. I have changed my passwords, however I am using ipchains. Today my computer has freezed (!!! Its a debian it really shouldn't :) ) and I found those zeroes again after pressing that big red button. Do someone know something about this all? May this be a security problem?
