problem installing debian-40r3-i386-netinst.iso

2008-07-08 Thread Vwaju
I installed Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 r3 "Etch" – Official i386 NETINST
Binary-1 20080218-14:15 on my old Dell Dimension 4100, and it went off
without a hitch.

Using the same disk, I tried to install it on my old Gateway Solo 1100
laptop (which has a Celeron processor, 64MB of RAM and a 5GB HD).

It seemed to be going fine (in "low memory mode") but during "Load
Installer Components from CD" the installation stalled trying to
retrieve zliblg-udeb. I was not able to get passed this point.

There's nothing wrong with the disk, since it was fine for the first
installation. Is 64 MB just not enough memory?

I would be grateful for any thoughts any of you might have about this.

Thanks & Best Regards,

Vwaju

Does that actually work? I've always just used k3b or arson or some
other GUI to round off the corners...

Try mounting the CD on a working computer. If the CD contains one file
(i.e. debian-40r3-i386-netinst.iso) then
you burned it wrong.

If it contains many files and directories, then you probably burned it
correctly.

Yes.

Try this link:
http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/#stable

Anyway, the md5sum for the CD you mention is:
1df0cf02ba4213dd94b3e8bbe20cfe73

There is no reputable Linux distro that ships CD images without providing
hashes.

As far as I can tell, there is no pre-computed md5 checksum provided
with the download (http://www.debian.org/distrib/netinst#smallcd).
Am I missing something?

I have tried only these 3 computers, and haven't yet found one that
boots from debian-40r3-i386-netinst.iso.

If you copied the iso, then that's not surprising. You need to burn the iso
as an image.

Did you copy the file to the CD, or burn the ISO image? Just copying
the file will not produce a bootable CD.

Have you calculated the md5sum ? was it the right md5sum ?

Gateway Solo 1100 laptop
Dell Dimension 4100
Dell Inspiron 8500

(I set the boot order to boot the CD drive first. However, the CD is
bypassed in every case.

And does it boot on any other computers?

And how did you burn the iso? Does the cd contain just the one iso file
or a number of files and directories?

I think from your comment "copied to cd" you may not have burnt the CD
correctly.
