Prova de fer un 'strace' del programa groff.
strace groff
Per veure en quina ruta va a buscar el fitxer DESC. En el meu cas és:
/usr/share/groff/1.18.1/font/devps/DESC
Aquest fitxer és necessari perquè funcioni el groff. A mi em va passar que
el vaig compilar jo amb la variable prefix i anava ha buscar el fitxer en
una ruta incorrecte.
Potser això t'ajudi.
Per cert per imprimir planes man faig servir:
man -t man man.ps
o
man .-t man |lpr

redirection is necessary as the -T flag causes output to be directed
to stdout with no pager. The output could be viewed with a program such
as xdvi or further processed into PostScript using a program such as
dvips.
