I feel not to change upstream's name. I threw the gnome in because Ticker is too simple and basic. I will admit that gnome-ticker is a bit broad as well, however this application has plenty of room to meet the broad description as it is only at version 0.1. I always try to stay close to what upstream names and describes about their application. The wonderful thing about our package system is being able to change these things as we go. Upstreams description is a bit underpowered, but will change as it matures into a more powerful application. -- Sean Harshbarger http://harshy.homelinux.org - Personal Website http://coaster.sourceforge.net - Coaster - The Gnome CD Burner So ya...this squirrel just pops out of nowhere. -Adam Powers signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

That's unrealistic for several reasons: [...] an extreme example would be somebody distributing an image viewer named jpegview that didn't support the JPEG format. thats a good point. b) Our users care about what toolkits applications are written in; having an easily-identifiable nomenclature for that (gnome-*, for instance) makes their lives easier. to me, including toolkit information in the program name is duplication of information, since that information is already stated in the dependencies list of the package. c) There is already a ticker in the archive - did you even *check*? oops. will do next time. Perhaps you should explain _why_ you believe the upstream name should be used unconditionally. i dont think all of this unconditionally. my orignal point was that information about what a program does or what toolkit it uses is contained elsewhere in the packages control file, not in its package name. -- gram pgppY8MjFecL7.pgp Description: PGP signature
Bug#169079: Preliminary LRRD packages available.
In case anyone's interested, I've put out some preliminary packages at http://users.linpro.no/tore/lrrd/. I can't guarantee flawless upgrades quite yet, but it's very likely that there won't be any problems from this point on. sources.list lines are: deb http://users.linpro.no/tore/lrrd ./ deb-src http://users.linpro.no/tore/lrrd ./ Quick installation guide: * Install the lrrd-client package on all the nodes you want monitored * Install the lrrd-server package on your webserver, and fill in the addresses of the various nodes to be monitored. (The Debconf questions should be quite self-explanatory.) Feedback would be much appreciated, especially from developers who might be interested in sponsoring these packages for me. -- Tore Anderson
Bug#186116: ITP: ParMETIS: distributed graph partitioning and sparse matrix reordering
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist I intend to package ParMETIS, which is a tool for optimal partitioning of graphs and meshes and reorder sparse matrices for to minimize fill when using direct solvers. This tool is primarily used for load balancing and communication optimization in finite element simulations on parallel computers, including Beowulf clusters. It uses MPI for communication, and should work just fine on Debian beowulfs. Unfortunately, as you can see below, the license is very non-free, so I obtained permission from the author (attached) to distribute it with Debian. Also unfortunately, if I link PETSc to ParMETIS, that will throw it into contrib; or I can maintain two versions: petsc in main with no parmetis dependency, and petsc-contrib in contrib with it. I don't like this, and have encouraged upstream to dual-license or otherwise change distribution and use terms in a way which will allow us to put it in main and protect his financial interests. But no bite yet. :-( Upstream COPYRIGHT file: Copyright Notice The ParMETIS/METIS package is copyrighted by the Regents of the University of Minnesota. Bug#185997: ITP: gnome-ticker -- Gnome Ticker is a Stock watching program.
That's unrealistic for several reasons: [...] an extreme example would be somebody distributing an image viewer named jpegview that didn't support the JPEG format. thats a good point. Thanks. b) Our users care about what toolkits applications are written in; having an easily-identifiable nomenclature for that (gnome-*, for instance) makes their lives easier. to me, including toolkit information in the program name is duplication of information, since that information is already stated in the dependencies list of the package. My concern was that that information is not readily-accessible. (There are already a huge number of packages in the archive, which people have to sift through; imagine having to list dependencies in the frontends too) c) There is already a ticker in the archive - did you even *check*? oops. will do next time. No probs. Perhaps you should explain _why_ you believe the upstream name should be used unconditionally. i dont think all of this unconditionally. my orignal point was that information about what a program does or what toolkit it uses is contained elsewhere in the packages control file, not in its package name. In that case, I'll apologise. Given this particular situation, I thought you were suggesting that it should be unconditional. pgprCD3IWmFaa.pgp Description: PGP signature

Bug#186180: RFP: kmut -- A tiny utility for adjusting kernel module usage counts
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2003-03-25 Severity: wishlist * Package name: kmut Version : 0.1 Upstream Author : Sepp Wijnands [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://www.plasser.nl/cgi-bin/cgi-bash/index.sh?query=kmutbgcolor=d0d0e0middle=projects * License : GPL Description : A tiny utility for adjusting kernel module usage counts Kernel Module Usage Terminator (kmut) is a tiny utility for adjusting module usage counts. When Linux kernel a module is being accessed, it increases its 'usecount', and when it's finished it decreases its 'usecount'. This mechanism prevents a module from being unloaded while it is in use. Kmut is useful when working with buggy modules that might crash before properly decrementing their usecount. Such modules are usually impossible to unload unless a utility like kmut is used to force the usecount down to zero. -- System Information Debian Release: testing/unstable Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux addie 2.4.20 #5 Tue Jan 28 02:34:54 CET 2003 i686 Locale: [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My concern was that that information is not readily-accessible. i guess it depends on what you mean by easily acessible. with aptitude i do i search for libgnomeui-0, hit the 'r' key, and *bam*, i can see all of the gnoem packages in debian. thats readily accessible to me. though i dont neccessarily expect everybody to know how (or want to know how) to do that. maybe the system that osamu, daniel, et al are working on will help here. imagine having to list dependencies in the frontends too) im not sure what you mean (or what frontend you use), since aptitude does display depedency information (though i guess not upfront). -- gram pgp10OMV6fLup.pgp Description: PGP signature
