Bug#295760: Uploading ming to Debian

2005-06-21 Thread Erich Schubert
Hi,
I was toying around with ming at some time, but development had stalled.
I was interested in the perl extension, and when development picked up
again, it was only focussed around the PHP extension, breaking the perl
extension (and I never got some of the other extensions to work).
I dislike PHP (most php apps are really bad code, but with fancy looks),
so I dropped it. I don't want to maintain a package I don't use myself.

Also I felt the need to check the code for potential security holes; I
have no idea if anyone has done that yet. Right now I wouldn't want to
run it on my web server... another reason not to provide a package.

best regards,
Erich Schubert

Bug#315245: O: nemesi -- standards-compliant multimedia streaming client

2005-06-21 Thread Jeroen van Wolffelaar
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

The package nemesi, does not have a fleshblood maintainer, and the
mailinglist listed as maintainer has never shown any activity (but the package
has been RC buggy since the very first (and so far only) upload). Therefore, I
orphan this package now. If you want to be the new maintainer, please take it
-- see http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/index.html#howto-o for detailed

NOTE: the package never has been built before, maybe it better can be removed

Description: The dbench (disk) and tbench (TCP) benchmarks
dbench and tbench simulate the load of the netbench industry
standard benchmark used to rate (windows) file servers. Unlike netbench,
they do not require a lab of Microsoft Windows PCs: dbench produces
the filesystem load on a netbench run, and tbench produces the
network load, allowing simpler bottleneck isolation.
 .
Note that this benchmark is *not* a realistic reflection of normal
 server load.

Justification: No activitiy in nearly a year, no response to pings

Can you please review bug #177370 and let me know whether it makes
sense to keep this package (i.e. does uuencode/uudecode really have
 this functionality or not).

I just tried uudecode (from sharutils 1:4.2.1-13), and it does not seem
to support yEnc at all.

According to
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_contents.pl?word=uudecodesearchmode=searchfilescase=insensitiveversion=unstablearch=i386
sharutils contains the only uudecode in Debian, so I'm not sure what

Yeah, maybe uudecode isn't the package he's talking about. apt-cache
search yenc didn't help though. A quick check shows that we've had
sharutils upstream version 4.2.1 since at least potato[0], so I'm pretty
sure it doesn't have yEnc.

Every month you pay bills making some corporation wealthier and wealthier.
If you could substantially decrease your telephone, electric, gas, water, and

Would you choose smaller insurance payments over the larger payments?
If 60 seconds of your time could save YOU hundreds of your very own dollars

Take 60 seconds, enter your name and phone number,,

  Description : Yet Another mkInitRD

YAIRD is a sysfs-based initrd builder. It determines which modules
to load based on the same algorithms as hotplug. Unlike Debian's
stock initrd-tools, the kernel being booted need not support the
 now-deprecated devfs.
 .
This version builds the newer cpio format initrds, even though the
stock Debian configuration uses the older format. Thus, having
cramfs compiled into the kernel is not necessary. YAIRD supports
 only kernel 2.6.

I am in good dialogue already with upstream about the Debian packaging.

You may wish to change the package description to talk about initramfs,
rather than initrd, if that's what you mean. The two can be used for
the same purposes, but are not the same thing.

Good idea.

I believe both formats is actually supported, but I will make sure the
word initramfs is mentioned in long description.

Description : A ANSI Editor for Linux similar to TheDraw.

DuhDraw is a program which almost perfectly simulates TheDraw for DOS.
Back in the good old BBSing days, TheDraw was a program used by a SysOp
in order to draw ANSI screens, the only graphics available on BBSes for
quite a while. However, for a long time, nobody considered Linux, as
Linux BBSes were uncommon. Other applications of the software include
login screens, and mud screens.

Bug#315289: Putting jython up for adoption

2005-06-21 Thread Ben Burton

Last night I formally put the jython package up for adoption (#315289).

The reasons are because my time is rather more constrained than it used
to be, and because I have increasingly little to do with java these
days.

Since jython is a non-trivial piece of software, it seems worthwhile
outlining things that the new maintainer should know.

Interested Parties
--

There are two parties with a specific interest in jython:

- The java maintainer group [EMAIL PROTECTED];
- Matthias Klose [EMAIL PROTECTED], who looks after cpython.

If you have plans to adopt jython, it is worth contacting these parties
(and in fact I'd prefer them to have first pick at the package if they'd
like to adopt it or co-maintain it themselves).

Packaging Issues

There are several issues that the prospective jython maintainer(s)
should know about, which the rest of this mail will outline. If you
have any questions at all, please feel free to mail me.

In a similar vein, if you find something strange or unusual in the
packaging, please do mail me and ask if there is a reason behind it. If
you just say bah, what was he thinking and get rid of it, there is a
chance you are re-introducing an error / licensing problem / whatever.
It's entirely possible I was just being peculiar, but it's best to write
and ask. (I realise this sounds condescending, but I have had people
break packages like this several times before in the KDE arena, hence
the note.)

1. Freeness

Since I began packaging jython I have insisted on jython staying in
main. This is the reason behind several of the peculiar packaging
practices, since keeping jython in main was somewhat more difficult
in 2001 than it is nowadays.

Some parts of the jython sources have been excluded from the build
(since they rely on non-free/contrib libraries). The most prominent
disabled components are the database classes, which rely on JDBC
drivers that were non-free/contrib until just a couple of months ago.
Now that libpgjava and libmysql-java have moved to main, the database
   classes probably deserve another look.

2. Python Version

Since jython is an implementation of python, it shares many of the
same core modules. Rather than ship duplicates, I chose to depend
on cpython and massage jython's path to use modules from there.
(Note that jython still ships its own version of those modules that
   need jython-specific tweaking.)

The result of all this is that the version of jython is strongly tied
to the version of its cpython dependency. In particular, jython 2.1
(the current version) still depends on python 2.1.

Upstream is active but very slow. I believe they are working towards
a 2.3 or 2.4 implementation but this is not expected for some months
yet. Upstream has also missed ETAs by a _long_ way before, so please
don't come in expecting anything soon.

The current version (2.1) was released in late 2001. There was
an alpha 2.2 release a couple of years ago, but I opted not to upload
an alpha release to debian (and I'm thankful that I didn't, since
this was never followed by a beta or final version). There have been
no other releases since then, though upstream is still working on it
   (i.e., upstream is not dead).

I know that Mathias Klose and others are wanting to finally remove
cpython 2.1 from debian. This would require one of two things:

   - waiting on a new jython release;
   - shipping duplicates of the python modules in jython and removing
 the cpython dependency.

Note that removing the cpython dependency (and eventually removing
python2.1) also raises issues for jython's current support of
   3rd-party packages in /usr/lib/python2.1/site-packages.

3. Makefiles

Currently the jython packages build from Makefiles. This is
primarily because ant was not in main when jython was packaged,
and it's mainly been debian revisions since then (if it ain't
   broke, don't fix it, etc).

Upstream certainly has better support for ant than it has for
Makefiles, and it probably makes sense to change to an ant build for
   the next upstream release.

4. Readline / Editline Linking

Jython includes an optional component for enabling readline support.
Unfortunately jython also includes code under the old python license
that was (arguably) not GPL-compatible. Even when jython eventually
releases a new upstream version, I fully expect that this will still
be GPL-incompatible (within the jython license soup, the JPython
Software License uses the same GPL-incompatible clause).

The library that enables readline support for jython is
libreadline-java. Upstream for that library and myself have put a
fair amount of effort into making that library work with libedit2,
which is BSD and hence not a problem.

The magic key in the jython registry is python.console.readlinelib,
   which defaults to Editline in

Description : a simple C library for VT102 terminal emulation

ROTE is a simple C library for VT102 terminal emulation. It allows the
programmer to set up virtual 'screens' and send them data. The virtual
screens will emulate the behavior of a VT102 terminal, interpreting escape
sequences, control characters and such. The library supports ncurses as
well so that you may render the virtual screen to the real screen when you
 need to.

Bug#312740: Packaging of rote and anyterm

2005-06-21 Thread Roberto C. Sanchez
Faidon,

I am interested in seeing these get into Debian. I accidentally
duplicated the ITP on rote before I saw one was already filed. I had
already created the packages. It will not take me long to have the
anyterm package finished. If possible, I would like to take over both
ITPs, since I can have the packages uploaded via my sponsor within a day
or two. Please let me know what you think, as I don't want to hijack
the packages out from under you.

I have already merged my duplicate ITP of rote with the existing one.

The packages I created for rote are at

http://familiasanchez.net/~sanchezr/debian (for the Sarge version)
http://familiasanchez.net/~sanchezr/debian/uploads (for the Sid version)

The anyterm packages will be done by Wednesday night.

-Roberto

Bug#315292: ITP: monarch -- web-based configuration system for Nagios

2005-06-21 Thread Alec Berryman
Hi Sean, thanks for your email.

sean finney on 2005-06-21 20:42:42 -0400:

as the maintainer of the nagios packages, i'd be happy to work with you
on having monarch and nagios cooperate together as cleanly and
 effectively as possible.

Thanks very much for the offer and I will certainly take you up on it
- I subscribed myself to the alioth nagios mailing list earlier today
to keep in the loop and was planning to submit my package there for
review.

also, wrt the database-related aspect of monarch, you might be
interested in another package (coming to sid in a few weeks, hopefully),
 dbconfig-common[1].

I just looked through the dbconfig-common docs and it looks great -
dbconfig-common eliminates many of the problems I have begun to
tackle and will make updates simple.

My hesitation with using dbconfig-common now is that I plan on
backporting monarch for use with a Sarge machine's Nagios install.
I'll probably do an initial packaging just using debconf so I have
something workable and installable and then transition to
dbconfig-common. I plan to have monarch working this week so I'll be
able to give you feedback on dbconfig-common before it hits sid.

hey alec,

cool. it's fairly low-volume as far as lists go, mostly bugs and
notifications of new uploads.

My hesitation with using dbconfig-common now is that I plan on
backporting monarch for use with a Sarge machine's Nagios install.

okay. it's worth pointing out that dbconfig-common is completely
sarge-compatible too (it's just a bunch of debconf templates, shell
scripts, and wrappers around mysql/psql cli's), and has no
dependencies other than pwgen (for generating random passwords).

i guess that it's also worth pointing out that it's also fairly easy
to bring dbconfig-common in on packages that didn't previously use it,
though you can help yourself now by storing the password information in a
machine-readable (php/perl/shell) config file.

I'll probably do an initial packaging just using debconf so I have
something workable and installable and then transition to

cool. i currently don't know of any issues minus a particularity with
postgres databases and schema permissions, so any feedback is welcome.
